Likable Little Leaf

I love my little Leaf, but our relationship is one of compromises, not ideals. The detractions were big enough for me to knock off a star, but I feel this toy could gain it back easily for someone else.

Use

Leaf by Swan's Fresh is a pretty, green, ergonomic palm-sized vibe intended for clitoral use. The ergonomic shape makes it great for all-over teasing and play, and lends itself to creative use. The Fresh is in no way suitable for insertion, although, the more defined tip could be used for teasing those areas if used with a barrier/cleaned between uses as needed.

Material / Texture

The Fresh is made of a latex and phthalates free 100% silicone that is non-porous and body safe. The silicone is soft, but does have a small amount of drag. Running my fingers over it, there's more resistance than a plastic or velvet finish. It's not enough to make me feel I must use a lubricant, but it would probably benefit from just a dollop. The Fresh is not a completely soft silicone toy, like the MiMi, it's silicone over a hard inner core. The silicone is fairly thick and cushy (thicker than MiMi's).

The one unfortunate thing about the silicone is that it's a bit more of a lint-magnet than Je Joue's, but less so than the Fun Factory toys I have.

There's a slight smell, but it's not at all unpleasant. "Clean" or "new" are the best words I can use to describe it. I can't tell unless I'm holding it up against my nose and sniffing at it, though. After a few awkward moments, I concluded the Fresh doesn't have any sort of taste.

Design / Shape / Size

The Fresh is simple and abstract, a perfect equation for discreet. Unless someone picked it up and managed to unlock it and turn it on, it keeps its secret hidden. The shape reminds me of a cat's claw and any way I hold it, it's magically ergonomic.

Assuming the charging port is on the left and the power button is at the top, the toy is about 3 1/4" long and tapers from 2 1/2" tall on the charging port end to a round 1/4" tip at the other. The top is convex and the bottom concave. On the end with the charging point, it dips in the middle like the top of a heart.

The single control button is under the silicone skin. Right below the bump of the button is the word "leaf" and on the charging port surface you have "Power Bullet" and a bunch of little symbols including voltage and a reminder not to chuck it in the garbage if you want to get rid of it. Thankfully, these are not as noticeable as I'd feared. They're very subtle and situated in a way that the very light texture doesn't come into contact during use. They're much less pronounced than the 3D model on Leaf's website.

There is a seam running the perimeter of the toy, but it's not terrible, but not invisible. I can feel it with my fingers, but have not noticed it in use.

The Fresh is great for travel. It's tiny and the control button can be locked by quickly tapping it three times. To unlock is the same. The manual says it comes factory locked, but mine wasn't, just as a note. The control isn't super easy to activate, anyway, it takes a firm press. If I'm just putting it in the bag at home, I don't bother locking it.

To charge, you just slip the long pin on the charger end into the charging port. A light will glow red to let you know you've connected it. Very easy, effective and not finicky.

Functions / Performance / Controls

The Fresh only has one button and it's as effective as one button can possibly be. Unlocking and locking, as said, is three quick taps. Unlocked, turning it on or off is one tap. When on, you start out on the lowest level of vibration and to turn it up you hold down the button. If you want to go down, you have to tap off and on and hold again. There are no patterns or different modes - you just get straight vibrations.

It's not the worst it could be for one button, and very well done. I just wish it had two because I like turning toys up and down during use. I also don't like feeling like I'm guessing if it's going to land at the right speed - because if I'm not quite right, I can't bring it down without starting over. Two buttons for raising and lowering intensity with this press and hold control function would have been amazing.

The Fresh is very quiet and I can barely hear it when used under the covers. It's a nice low hum, a hum that matches the low and rumbly pitch of the vibrations themselves. For strength of vibration, this toy is pretty strong. I was expecting to be let down, but the vibrations are only the tiniest bit less powerful than MiMi. I had them side by side and it was a tough call, there were areas on the toy that felt up to the level of MiMi's 5, but they became more diffuse away from the motor. Due to shape and thickness of silicone, I think they just conduct vibration differently. The Fresh's silicone has more movement, giving it a good sensation with even just a light touch.

For me, MiMi is the toy to beat and I feel like this was a photo-finish.

The vibrations in the Fresh are located near the tip and are definitely strongest there. I feel like a stronger, more centrally located motor would have given the Fresh more versatility in the use of shape since it has some nice curves otherwise, but not a lot of power reaches them.

The battery is reported to last 40 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes depending on speed used. This is not the greatest battery life on the market, but I didn't find a problem with it during use, though, I can see how it might give out during a more lengthy session, especially if used only for constant, added teasing in a couple's setting.

Care and Maintenance

Leaf is very good about telling you how to care for their product, but I'll go over it here too.

The Fresh should be used only with water-based lubricant, no silicone as it can bond with the toy and cause degradation. Their recommendation for cleaning with soap and water is spot-on, however, they advise against using isopropyl alcohol or other solvents so as not to damage the finish. Since this toy is waterproof, I'd stick to soap and water or toy wipes. Easy to care for, but as per manufacturer recommendation, might not be an ideal toy for sharing.

The toy is very small, so storage is easy. It comes with its own quality storage bag and that's what I've been using. You're advised to keep the Fresh away from other silicone toys, and as always, it should be stored in a cool, dark and dry place.

Packaging

Leaf's packaging is amazing. It's not opulent and elegant, but it's very, very well made and conveys the line's "green" aesthetic. It's fairly discreet, I don't think anyone would guess what it is at a glance, without really examining the back of the box, and there's its only clues, nothing explicit.

The external box comes wrapped in plastic. The box itself is a natural-looking cardboard and opens from the bottom side like a chest. The closure is secured with two magnets which work wonderfully. Inside, you'll find a thick black paper insert that says "leaf, by swan" on it - inside are the words "Natural Pleasure" and the manual. The manual is thick and is the best manual I've seen with a toy. It goes into detail about cleaning and which lubricant should be used. If you gave someone who'd never had a toy before this as a gift, the manual would tell them everything they needed to know.

Under the insert, you'll find the Fresh itself and the charger, both wrapped in plastic. The charger is black, takes up only one outlet and is nearly identical to the Tango's charger with the same ergonomic curve for gripping. A sticker on the toy's plastic states clearly that this toy should not be used with silicone lubricant, you can't avoid it even if you skip reading the manual.

At the very bottom is the oatmeal-colored storage pouch. It's a generous size and could fit the Fresh and charger. The material is reminiscent of burlap, but a much tighter weave and the smoothness of a cotton twill. The Leaf logo with "by swan" are printed on the bag. The drawstring is synthetic with no aglets, but melted ends. The bag isn't lined, but it's not a lint-producing material and of no detriment to the toy.

    • Discreet looking packaging
    • Very informative
    • Would make a nice gift

Personal comments

It's important to note that this toy has the same "problem" that Mimi does. When you use this toy enough for it to warm up, the pressure of the hot air inside has nowhere to escape due to the waterproof design and the silicone skin puffs up until the air cools down again. This is not noticeable and does not affect use in any way.

I don't think this is a flaw, necessarily, but something customers should be aware of so it doesn't cause worry. I don't believe the toy is defective, it's just a small aesthetic annoyance that is the price for a truly waterproof design like this.

Experience

My personal experience? The shape of this toy is interesting, but not fully realized. This toy was powerful enough for me, but this is the first toy whose vibrations have somewhat irritated my hand while in use. Perhaps it's the thicker silicone skin, conducting the movement of the vibrations more.

One of my biggest issues with this toy was that it tugged at my pubic hair. Owch! I have never had that problem before and it's really put me off using this toy that I would otherwise want to. Perhaps lubricant will help, but I hate using it if I don't have to. I'm sorry, Leaf, but I'm not going to shave down there just to use you, I have toys that love me, hair and all. I mention this since I've never had trouble with draggier silicone insertables, because they aren't in a position to be arching right over the mons pubis.
