Rubber is porous so it can not be sterilized. The problem this causes is the potential for bacteria to be spread to your vagina if it touches you during sex. That being said, if you take care to keep these ties clean and clean them before and after sex, contamination should be minimal. I use liquid antibacterial hand soap and allow all the parts to air dry separately before placing in a zip top plastic baggy for storage.
