As the old saying goes, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." So what do you do as the beholder if your definition of beauty doesn't coincide with what society generally views as beautiful? For some the answer is that you turn to the Suicide Girls. Interesting name aside, Suicide Girls is a concept started by Missy Suicide in Portland in 2001.

The Suicide Girls are not what you'd classically think of when you think of beautiful female erotic models. They aren't all 5'11", blonde, 110 pounds with 34EE breasts. Their skin is not unblemished. Flip through the pages of this book and you'll see more tattooed and pierced female forms concentrated in one book than most any other book out there. Though I hate to stereotype any of the Suicide Girls, the typical model has curves, small breasts, piercings and tattoos. She's the girl you'd find on the street corner smoking between rock gigs instead of the plastic surgery Barbie Doll on the average porn set.

It's an aesthetic that not everybody enjoys. Fortunately for me, it's an aesthetic I really love. I can appreciate the female body in all its wonderful forms and looking at the photos in this book, I believe anybody can find something they like. Not every girl is alike in these pages. Matter of fact, you'd be hard pressed to find two models who look exactly alike.

Missy Suicide has brought about a revolution in the way erotic models are viewed. There's always been a desire for girls who look this way, but Missy has found a way to capitalize on that desire and turn it into profit.

This hardcover book brings together some of the most beautiful of all of the Suicide Girls' photos. They're presented on crisp, clean white pages and artfully arranged. Each page features between one and three photos of a given girl or girls with a little grey bar pronouncing their name. There is something special and unique about each of the girls but two things remain constant in all of the pictures. You can tell they really love themselves and they are proud of their bodies. The don't fit any mold and they like it that way.

The last third of the book is a section called "Self-Portraits." Each girl has her own page, with a photo, some vital statistics such as name, age, location and some interests. Each girl's page also has a little diary written by them. It can be some blurbs they've written like a daily journal, random facts about themselves, or answers to common questions they get asked. The blurbs are on a soft pastel pink background, a Suicide Girls color scheme. The index of the book lists all the girls featured in the book and what pages they can be found on.

This is a coffee table book for those who like beauty. If your definition of beauty doesn't involve breast implants, but does involve piercings and tattoos, you'll find a lot to like when you flip through the pages of Suicide Girls, edited by Missy Suicide.
