Nowadays everyone is a potential Suicide Girl. Piercings and tattoos are becoming more socially acceptable, and are pretty normal in porn. But it was nice to take a stroll down memory lane, way back to 2004. If I spotted a man or woman with nerd glasses, purple hair, or a septum piercing, I knew we would be friends.

The Suicide Girl books features wonderful pictures of gorgeous alternative girls of every type. Piercings, colorful tattoos, and Betty Page bangs are all represented in the cheeky, colorful photographs. The photos don't feel exploitative or forced, and the girls look powerful, and often have a secretive pin-up girl smile. My favorite picture is of the impossibly cute DebraJean with blue hair and spiky wrist cuffs.

Another nice thing about the book is that "real" body types are represented. There are no gigantic fake boobs with ultra tiny photoshopped waists. There are curves, lack of curves, scars, rounded bellies. Short hair, long hair, mohawks, dreads. I'd describe myself as fairly straight, but these are the kind of women I tend to have huge nerd crushes on.

Most of the book contains clear, colorful photos of girls. Most photos are solo but there are some couple and trio shots in there for good measure. In a lot of porn photos, the settings the subjects are in look really plain or really unnatural, like someone threw a houseplant in the corner so it looks like OMG, this was totally candid and filmed in someone's house. There are some shots like that in Suicide Girls, but it was also interesting to see backgrounds of bookshelves, bathrooms, bedrooms, and 7" record collections.

The back of the book features "self-portraits" of all the girls, as well as a little profile where they answer questions about what being a Suicide Girl means to them and excerpts of their journals from their website profile.

All in all, this is an excellent book to own if you enjoy seeing sexy alternative "girls" wearing very little to nothing at all. The hardcover collection of photos would even make a rad coffee table book if your usual guests are ok with a little soft core porn when they visit.
