Annie Sprinkle—former prostitute and porn star turned sexologist, performance artist and post-modern feminist—has been studying and teaching sexual ecstasy through new-age, experimental exploration for over 35 years. She created the “Sluts and Goddesses” workshop in 1991, which developed into the foundation for the film, co-directed by filmmaker Maria Beatty.

“Sluts and Goddesses” is a playful exploit into the manifestations of the “slut” and “goddess” archetypes. It is designed to show the viewer how to embrace these aspects of herself in order to achieve a more heightened sense of self, connectedness, spirituality, sexual ecstasy and pleasure through orgasm.

In “Sluts and Goddesses”, Annie and 11 of her girlfriends (the "Transformation Facilitators") demonstrate the various aspects of the slut/goddess dichotomy through 101 forms of sexual exploration and sexual identities using costumes, fantasy role-playing and a variety of experiments. These include gender-bending, lesbianism and bisexuality, masturbation, tantra rituals, energy orgasms, sex magic, ecstasy breathing, female ejaculation, whimsical types of sexual interaction and numerous other sensual forms of pleasure.

The film is a comical, silly, uplifting, poignant, mystical and at times a bizarre adventure into the primeval and mysterious aspects of female sexuality. It is meant to guide the viewer into a world of expanded sexual pleasure, and teach her how to reclaim her inner slut or goddess. As with many of Annie’s films, it uses kitschy dissolves, superimpositions, and swirling other-worldly background special effects, which is often distracting and takes away from the positive significance of the film making it a bit hokey. I believe the filmmakers where attempting to demonstrate the experience of new-age ecstasy and cosmic consciousness through experimental techniques often used in avant-garde films. It is not entirely successful and would most likely deter mainstream viewers.
