Fifty Shades of Grey book 1 - book discontinued by Vintage Books - review by bedorerc

I enjoyed reading this book, but I dont think it should be considered erotica. I didnt think the sex was that interesting, unlike other erotic books I have read. In truth I found it sort of boring to read, and I think the book would have been just as good without it. It might have even been better with out the sex, or if the sex had been differnt. There are some interesting ideas, but nothing that I havent read many times in romance novels. I didnt find the sex to be up to the hype.

The other main problem was that the writing is pretty bad. It is very repetative, the ideas are not that believable, and too much time is spent on unimportant things. For example, the contract. I understood why the book included the idea, but way too much time was spent on it. Instead of them talking about it for a few pages, there was the whole thing written out, and more than once. Plus pages and pages of them talking about it. All for something that is never used. But even with all this, I still had a hard time putting the book down. The author kept me intrested in what was going on with the relationship, even when I was hating the writing. Also, the inner dialog is pretty amusing, just that alone made up for most of the writting.

Finally, if you do enjoy the first book, it would be a good idea to have the second book ready. The first has an abupt ending, and leaves you sort of stuned that it is over. He goes too far, she runs away, the book is done. So many things are left open. There is no closure like there should be at the end of the first part of a triogy. I think the books should have been together as one very long book, with three parts.
