Nostalgia by Reel Queer - review by The Wolf

Nostalgia is porn with a queer and safer-sex ethic. Not only does it have specifically "queer" scenes from classic porn films, it does so with actors with different body types and with the use of latex barriers. The movie was very well-imagined and, in my opinion, well-executed. Certainly, the film falls prey to many of the same pitfalls that art porn usually does, mainly obviously poor camera and sound equipment, although I think this lends it a certain DIY charm.

This film is pretty much exclusively for queer women, but also anyone else who likes to watch queer, female-bodied people go at it. The content is all queer sex, which mainly consists of oral sex, fingering, playing with toys, and strap-on sex. Something curious about this movie is that nearly every scene involves group sex, which makes this movie even more unique.

My main grievances with this movie are the low picture and sound quality and the lack of people of color in the movie. The picture quality is not that bad, but it does look rather pixelated and the color sometimes wavers and changes. The sound is a little empty and tinny, as it usually is in indy porn. And there were no people of color in this film, and I certainly would have appreciated more diversity.

As I mentioned before, the scenes in Nostalgia are based on classic porn scenes. The basic premise is that Trouble and her girl Pepper are in bed together (they used Violet Blue's apartment for that, anyone want to nerd out with me?) watching porn, and in their minds, these straight scenes get queered.

The first and second scenes are "The Abduction" and "Behind the Queer Door," based on the film "Behind the Green Door." The lead actress in these scenes, Kimberlee Cline, looks spookily like Gloria in the original film. She is kidnapped by some queers wearing feather masks (Jiz Lee and I believe Sadie Lune) and taken to a sex theater, whose audience stars Carol Queen! There, she is made to do all sorts of wonderful, horrible things with Jiz Lee and her accomplice. I really enjoyed this scene, especially when Jiz Lee uses her strap-on, and also when both the kidnappers ejaculate all over her. That's something you rarely see in porn, and I appreciated that.

The next scene is called "The Blakovich Spot," a queer nod to "Deep Throat." In this scene, doctor Syd Blakovich and nurse Jiz Lee (who is femmed up on this rare occasion, although unshaven like usual) diagnose and cure the sexually dissatisfied Madison Young. No matter what they do, she just can't derive pleasure. That is, until Dr. Blakovich puts their Outlaw down her throat. Then, the fireworks start and, let me warn you, people will come glitter.

Next is "Queer Babylon," a remake of a scene from the movie "Babylon Pink." This scene was the most confusing to me, partially because I didn't originally get the reference, and also because the sound was very low. Also, this one was the most obviously shot on a low-quality camera. Nevertheless, all the actresses in this scene are super-hot. Tina Horn has a badass charm and a big ass, at that. The other girls, which I'm having trouble identifying, are also really cute, and they all switch with each other and use awesome Njoy toys. However, this scene is pretty frustrating in that it never really builds up and is frequently very awkward. Also, the color keeps changing, and it doesn't have that dark, glittery atmosphere the rest of the movie does.

Next, there is a suicide scene that references "The Devil in Miss Jones." Now, a lot of reviews I've read have hated on this, but as a person with a knife and blood fetish, I thought this scene was great. Further, the sumptuous shots of April Flores were much appreciated.

Then, Flores goes to purgatory where she meets Kimberly Kane. Like in "Miss Jones," she is sent back to earth to experience lust. In this case, queer lust. Kane and Flores join Trouble and Pepper in bed for the most clever and satisfying end to a porn I have ever seen. The resulting foursome, shot in red light, is slow and sexy but builds up and is, in my opinion, the best scene to jill off to.

Although I can see why some people would not like this movie, I really loved its dark atmospheric nature and its sexy representation of the sex I like to have. I would recommend this to all queer porn viewers, and anyone else who wants a peek behind the queer door.

There were a bunch of actors that I was unable to identify in the film, but the cast list, as I understand it, goes as follows: April Flores, Kimberly Kane, Jiz Lee, Syd Blakovich, Madison Young, Trouble, Pepper Sox, Sealu Sideshow, Destiny Prince, Selena Raven, Tina Horn, Kimberlee Cline, Carson, Sadie Lune, and Carol Queen. I will highlight what I think were the best performances of the film:

Jiz Lee: very versatile in this film. In the first scene, she drives her strap-on into Kimberlee Cline in a really intimate and intense scene. Next, she dons a wig and a ton of makeup and plays femme to Syd Blakovich's butch.

Syd Blakovich: their performance in "the Blakovich Spot" was just hilarious, and the gender-bending definitely added to the film. Plus, they can really wield an Outlaw.

April Flores: As always, she is super-hot. And she can really act, something most porn stars struggle with.

Madison Young: What the woman can do with two Outlaws is incredible. She too, can do some acting, albeit campy. Plus, she took a hitachi to her clit and kept a straight face. All for the sake of queer porn.

I really appreciated the performances of all the actors in this film. They clearly enjoy the sex they are having onscreen, and their willingness to put their unconventional sexualities and bodies out there is commendable. I love to see all these queer people onscreen, because they are out and proud, because they look like me and my lovers, and because they are just plain hot.

The menu has five options: "Play Full Movie," "Scene Selection," "Behind the Scenes," "Photo Gallery," and "Roulette Trailer." The first two are self-explanatory. The behind the scenes is basically a cute little blooper reel. If you're really into the actors, this might be fun for you to check out, but it's not a must-see. The photo gallery is just five minutes of press photos of scenes and actors from the movie. The Roulette Trailer is cool, but not really a big deal since you can also see it online.

The packaging is pretty hot, given that it has April Flores spilling out of her slip and pouting at the camera. This is certainly not discreet, given the sexiness of that shot.

The back blurb gives you a good idea of what's happening in the movie, although I wish it had more info, like runtime (112 minutes, by the way) and a cast list.

I'll mention here that this is toy porn if there was one: the Njoy Eleven and the Fun wand, the Outlaw dildo, Jaguar harness, and the Squarepants harness. Maybe I'm just paraphilic, but I really dug that!
