extremely useful review
The Smart Girl’s Guide to the G-Spot surpassed my expectations. Before I read it, I hoped that it might provide me with more insight into the mysterious phenomenon of female ejaculation. It definitely did that, but it also gave me several hours of wonderful reading and a renewed appreciation for the g-spot.

I don’t even know where to start in describing the good things about this book. One thing I love is that when it calls itself “the smart girl’s guide,” it means it! The author is clearly intelligent. Case in point: she uses the word “comprise” correctly, which is no mean feat. At the same time, her tone is exceedingly down-to-earth and straightforward; she is never pretentious or condescending.

As I read on, my faith in the author’s wisdom grew. Blue dispels a lot of myths and makes no outrageous claims. She acknowledges that g-spot stimulation does not appeal to every woman but encourages every woman to at least try it out for the sake of finding out the cool things that our bodies are capable of. She doesn’t sugarcoat the fact that the g-spot is, essentially, the urethral sponge, and she provides helpful hints about the sometimes wet nature of g-spot play (for example, it’s always a good idea to pee before you begin playing with your g-spot).

The book’s main focus is the g-spot, but it also sneaks in various other goodies, including erotica at the end of every chapter written by Alison Tyler. I love the idea of mixing in a little erotica with the how-to; it provided just the stimulus I needed to get myself to actually put into practice the techniques Blue was suggesting.

Throughout the course of the book, Blue also provides useful information on sex toys, strap-ons, cunnilingus, the male prostate, fisting, the clitoris, Kegel exercises, and general female anatomy. Of course, the book does not bill itself as a comprehensive guide to sex, and it is definitely, in the end, a guide to the g-spot. Still, I appreciated the various forays that Blue makes into other topics of interest. She presents everything from a sex-positive perspective, encouraging women to celebrate the pleasure that our bodies are capable of experiencing.

The book includes specific instructions on g-spot massage for women who are stimulating themselves and for partners of women (gay or straight) who want to learn how to better stimulate their partner’s g-spots. For this reason, it will be useful for both women and men. Additionally, its non-judgmental, body-positive tone would make it a wonderful read for a young woman who is still getting to know her body. I wish I had read this book when I was eighteen; I would have been able to avoid a lot of misconceptions.

This is the first book that I’ve read by Violet Blue, but I doubt it will be my last. It would be a great read for both connoisseurs of the g-spot and those who are already g-spot “converts.” I give it five stars.
