extremely useful review
Having bought the first edition of The Whole Lesbian Sex Book by Felice Newman years ago when I first came out as a lesbian, I was looking forward to exploring the updated version. What I found was a tome that, while somewhat updated and expanded, contained basically the same information as the original. That is to say, it provides a wealth of knowledge which is thoroughly researched and smartly organized. Contents range from the basic pre-sex topics of anatomy, intimacy, gender, and health to in-depth explorations of sexual acts; both vanilla and exotic. Whole chapters are dedicated to breast play, clitoral play, oral sex, vaginal penetration, and anal penetration.

One major selling point of this book is its inclusiveness, not just the breadth of information presented, but the attitude that whatever turns you on is perfectly acceptable and even encouraged. The matter-of-fact tone also contributes to this feeling. Quotes scattered throughout each chapter were culled from questionnaires and interviews with hundreds of people who speak openly about their own sexual experiences. It would be impossible to read the book without finding at least a handful of quotes with which one identifies, a prospect that can be comforting for those just beginning to explore their sexuality, or interested in branching out.

On the flip side, if you are a seasoned veteran of lesbian sex (and all its variations, including sex with transgendered partners), you may find the book presents little new material to augment your own knowledge and personal experience. However, it may still be worth a read for the occasional nugget of random information or gem of forgotten wisdom. It might even prompt you to try something you haven't done in a while. Plus, the resources listed at the end of each chapter and in the appendix may be of interest.

That said, I particularly recommend this guide to women who are new to the wonderful world of lesbian sex. It will educate you, excite you, and set your mind at ease.

Pros:

  - Thorough, well-researched and nicely organized

  - Engaging style

  - Resources for additional information

Cons:

  - May be old news for long-time lesbians

  - Many of the illustrations are somewhat silly and unsexy in my opinion

Summary: The Whole Lesbian Sex Book is a staple of any lesbian bookshelf, as either a reference guide or bedtime reading. Whether you're interested in masturbation, partner sex, BDSM, or even where to find potential lovers, you'll find the answer in this book. Newly “out” women will particularly benefit from its deep level of detail and no-nonsense approach.
