A Very Useful Toy Cleaner
While I'd prefer an unscented version, Before & After Adult Toy Cleaner is a great way to keep your toys tidy between uses with a mild, water-free spray. Though, I wouldn't skip out on a good soap-and-water scrub completely, I highly recommend this product to anyone with a toy collection.Published: September 25, 2011
Pros:
cleans toys well, water-free, pleasant scent
Cons:
doesn't replace a good cleaning with soap and water
A toy cleaner is a nice addition to any collection, and I've been very happy with Before and After. It's a convenient spray that's both anti-bacterial and soap-free, and allows you to keep your toys tidy without the need for water.
As a person with sensitivities to many chemicals, I checked out the ingredient list carefully. One ingredient (cocamidopropyl pg-dimonium chloride phosphate) has some evidence of being a skin irritant, but the primary antibacterial element in this product is benzyl alcohol, a mild way of stopping bacterial growth. I liked the short ingredient list and the fact that this should be safe for most people; though as warned, use should be stopped if you notice any irritation as a result. Personally, I found the addition of fragrance to be unnecessary, but the smell is pleasant and not overwhelming, though strong. I almost never use the toy directly after treating with the Before and After wash, but I haven't encountered any allergic reactions, thankfully. The label specifically states that it should be safe for your toys and doesn't contain any harsh ingredients or artificial colors.
If I'm not washing a toy right away, I like the option of killing off any bacterial colonies growing on their surfaces, particularly in toys with lots of grooves or those that can't be thoroughly boiled or bleached. While I almost always follow up this spray with a thorough scrubbing in soap and water, using this spray seems like a pretty good way to keep everything a bit more sanitary. However, it simply dries on the surface of the toy, so further work is needed to wash off any lubes or residues, and I'd recommend a more thorough sanitizing between uses if you're sharing this toy, but don't want to exchange fluids. As the name implies, the directions tell you to spray down each toy both "before" and "after" use which seems unnecessary, in my opinion, if it worked the first time. However, it seems to do what it's meant to without any problems, so I give it high marks.

What does before & after do.. before you use it?
-
Is it both a lubricant and a sanitizer? how does that work?
-
It is not a lubricant but merely cleans the toys. When the toy is sitting around, it gathers fungal spores, dust, and bacteria.
-
Before you use it it sits there and looks pretty :P
In theory you're supposed to use it before you use your toys and then after you use your toys to ensure optimal cleanness. At least according to the bottle.

Before & After Toy Cleaner...

This one got lots of great reviews, but I've got a couple of questions for all you reviewers who use this. The description says you have to "spray, wipe, then rinse" but most of the reviews say no rinsing required. Can you guys confirm there's no residue if you don't rinse? One review mentioned it didn't clean the crevices of textured toys well. Anyone else have that experience? Would you say it replaces the soap & water routine completely?

Nah, it doesn't replace soap and water, in my opinion. It may be because I've used soap and water for so long, but I just don't see the benefit to spraying something and then wiping it off. I find the cleaner hard to wipe off on toys w/ texture, and maybe I'm nuts, but then I don't feel like a toy is really clean. It would do in a pinch, but I don't mind soap and water so that's what I go for 90% of the time.

I like the the idea of toy cleaner but I always wondered what exactly you wipe down with? What's a good cloth for that?
