Burning the Midnight Oil

The Jimmyjane Afterglow massage candle is a wonderful treat. Just light the candle and leave it for half an hour and you have warm luxurious massage oil to use on yourself or your partner. Beautifully packaged and worth of gift giving.

Use

The Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage candle is two treats in one. First there is the lovely candle, which like most candles, has a scent and creates a romantic atmosphere. But this candle also doubles as a massage oil. This massage candle is perfect for giving someone a relaxing massage, no strings attached. But it's also great for getting things warmed up for an evening of fun.

Like I said you can just use this as a candle. But this didn’t seem to do a very good job of making the room smell nice. I think the scent was just too subtle for that. I guess it would need to be a subtle scent, otherwise it could be overpowering when using the oil on someone’s body.

Texture / Consistency / Thickness / Viscosity

The oil itself is wonderful! According to Jimmyjane it is made of a natural blend of spa-grade ingredients and features a precise balance of Jojoba, Shea Butter, Vitamin E, Soy, Aloe and other botanical extracts that melt at the perfect temperature. And it is formulated to nourish and hydrate the skin. All I know is that I really liked it. The texture was that of a good quality massage oil. It didn't soak in too fast and I was able to give my husband a long luxurious massage without having to reapply the oil to the same areas. But it did finally soak in, and when he showered in the morning, his skin was nice and soft from all those wonderful ingredients.

Taste / Aroma

There are 6 different scents to choose from: cucumber water, dark vanilla, black currant, fig leaf, pink lotus and bourbon. I chose the fig leaf. I was thinking that it would have a sweet fig smell, but I was wrong. The fig leaf scent is a combination of leafy green, soapy clean, and just a very slight hint of sweet. I have to say, I'm not particularly crazy about it. My husband, on the other hand, really likes it. I was hoping for a sexier scent. But this scent is nice for a nonsexual relaxing massage. Also I did not notice any taste to the oil later when we were playing.

Performance

The first thing you do is light the Afterglow candle and let it burn for about half an hour. Once you have enough oil, blow out the candle and either use the brush that comes with it or pour it on your partner. The brush is very thick and soft. It's about 2x3 inches including the handle. I started with the brush, but found I kept having to go back to the candle to get more. So finally I just started pouring. Which worked much better, even though you do get a bit of the wax/oil on the outside of the holder.

As with all massage candles, when cold, the wax is a bit softer than normal candles. On the package it says that it will burn for 42 hours. Of course that means if you don't used it as a massage oil. But there is a lot of wax/oil in the holder. And I believe it will last us for quite a while. I gave my husband a full body massage with it and then let it burn for at least a couple more hours, and we used very little of it.

Packaging

Everything about the Afterglow candle is classy. But, then again, everything about Jimmyjane is as well. The candle comes in a nice heavy, square, white frosted candle holder. It also comes with the brush I mentioned, and a nice box of wooden matches. The packaging is very nice and gift worthy. There is also a small booklet included with instructions for use and safety in five different languages.

Personal comments

Over all I really like this product. I love the oil, and the whole packaging/presentation of it. But the fig leaf scent, not so much. I have since found that if you go to Jimmyjane.com you can look up the different scents and get an idea of what they smell like. Which should be very helpful in making your decision on which one to get.
Follow-up commentary
I'm starting to get used to the scent of this a bit more. I think it's because I now know what to expect of it. But as far as a massage oil goes, I still love it. This is made of wonderful body oils! I will repurchase if it ever runs out, but definitely in another scent.

  • Jimmy Jane Afterglow candles- Best Scent?
    • what's the best Jimmy Jane afterglow scent? or the better ones?
    • Well, first off, there are lots of threads on the scent of these candles already. But ignoring that, I think it's really up to your preference in smell.

In my experience, all the scents are fairly high quality, so it just depends on what you like. I personally favor the Dark Vanilla and Bourbon scents. My good friend prefers the Water Cucumber, while it is totally not for me. Some people love the Truffle Gardenia, but it's comparatively very floral. I would really like to try the Vetiver Honey in the ember series.

My recommendation would be to go with what is most similar to your usual favorite scent. Sweet edibles? Masculine spices? Flowers? Citrus? Or you could always try the sampler. More expensive but awesome :-)

Thank you for replying! I have read quite a few posts on the scents, but I'm still indecisive.

The special edition scents look tempting, but I would also like to make sure I purchase something both my partner and I would like. Also I kind of wanted to get a general sense of what is most widely liked. Which I feel I could have gotten with a poll, but unfortunately I am not sure how to do that. I did see a post explaining that to post a poll it the option is next to the post discussion option, but I have seen no such poll option.

  • Can you describe the scents of the Afterglow massage candles from Jimmyjane?
    • If your own words and from your own personal experience can you please describe what the different scents are like? I'm having trouble deciding on which ones to get. Thanks! =]
    • I did a review on the Afterglow Sampler set, but this is what I have with the scents.

Cucumber Water smells like a crisp, clear, watered down version of a cucumber melon scent, and is quite possibly my favorite. Pink Lotus has a decidedly floral scent to it; not overpowering but definitely there. It's hard to pinpoint anything more specific than "floral" for me on that one. Truffle + Gardenia (the special edition one, also available as a regular Ember candle) is also hard for me to pinpoint. It smells like an earthy floral to me, a more involved scent. Bourbon smells sweet to me, almost like molasses or something else I'd bake with. Dark Vanilla still smells like a generic "vanilla cookie" scent to me. And Grapefruit. To me, there's a hint of citrus and a whole lot more of something I can't put my finger on. When I first smelled it I thought back to the Habanero + Grapefruit mini Ember I have, only this is a little less spicy to the nose. JJ claims notes of grapefruit, bell peppers, and mandarin for this one.
    • Thanks! I think the ones I want to try most are Dark Vanilla, Cucumber Water, and the Truffle Gardenia... and the Bourbon. Jeez I want to smell them all. Choosing which to buy online is difficult but I'm sure whichever one I choose I'll love it anyway. =]

  • Afterglow Packaging
    • I was just curious - Jimmyjane has changed the style of the Afterglow candle to the "pour spout" that's rocked by the Ember. Is EF still selling the old style with the brush as indicated by the picture?

FYI I'm in favor of the pour divot format!
    • This is something I'd like to know, too. *Bump*
    • The new version features a spout for easy pouring and that is what currently available on EF.
