It's fun that you plug in!

I always thought of this toy as one “for old people,” and it took me many years before I tried it out. How I wish I had tried it sooner! While not a toy for a beginner, the powerful vibrations are just what I need sometimes! At 31, I don’t consider myself “old” either. If it is too strong for you, get a dimmer switch and plug it into that, but everyone should have this in his or her toy box!

Use

The Hitachi Magic Wand has so many uses! We have used this to loosen up back muscles while giving each other a massage while also using it around and directly on my clit. This is not a beginner’s toy! Even on low, the vibrations are very strong and directed at whatever the soft rubber end is touching. I would also recommend not starting with this toy. I find it too strong to start out with whether I am “going solo” or my partner and I are playing together. Because the vibrations are so strong, my partner does not care to use this particular toy near his “equipment," but it is great for stimulating the rest of him. On low it feels great on nipples too! Do not set this toy down when the actual sex begins; it is great fun to use during penetration too! Our favorite “non-foreplay” way to use this is doggy style while I hold it against my clit on high while he goes to town! The vibrations are strong enough that he can also feel them! It works wonders in other positions too, but we are not small people, so the logistics of getting any toy positioned can sometimes be tricky.

Material / Texture

The wand’s handle is hard plastic; it is very smooth and is contoured nicely for an easy hold. The head end is a softer material, but I believe still plastic. The soft end has a faux leather type texture to it, but the packaging is labeled as smooth. The texture is more for look though, you cannot feel it at all. When we purchased ours, we also purchased an attachment for it. The attachment is made of very soft latex and we choose to not use it as the vibrations do not transmit through to the end well. The texture on the head of the wand helps to hold the attachment in place.
    • No odor
    • Smooth

Design / Shape / Size

This is not a toy I will travel with unless it is by car! The shape is great for massaging out any tension in your muscles while also being compact enough to feel great on any of your more “private” areas. The head end measures just over 2 inches across but is not insertable (or I wouldn’t do it anyway). If you want something that goes "in," get one of the many attachments for it! Overall, the wand could be a little shorter in length for us (slightly over 12 inches from head to handle tip) but is great for home use. It isn’t easy to store since it is so long and the cord always seems to be in the way, but if your nightstand has a nice big drawer or two, it can be stuffed away fairly easily. The hardest part for us is having room to hide the extension cord. It has a 6-foot cord on it, but our house is lacking outlets close to our bed. Because this plugs into the wall and does not use batteries, some planning has to be done when using this in your foreplay or sex activities. It is a little inconvenient to have to stop, unwind the cord, plug it in, etc. Get this one set up in advance if you think you might want to use it!

Functions / Performance / Controls

All of the vibrations for this wand are in the head with very little of the vibrations even making it into the handle! This is a great feature for us; it is difficult to use a vibrator well once the vibrations have made the controller’s hand go numb! The controls for this are a simple high/low switch. You press it one way for high and the other way for low with off being right in the middle. A sliding control might be better for this since it packs such a strong vibration, but I think it would lack some of the “punch” if it had a slider! This is a very noisy toy! Don’t plan on this one if you are trying to be quiet or don’t want your roommates knowing what you’re up to! This is one of those toys you save for when you have the house to yourself or you have somehow convinced everyone else in the house that you only use this to work out those knots you get in your shoulder. Since the wand isn’t shaped like a penis or anything, that claim may work on the kiddos until they get old enough to go to school. This toy is not waterproof! It plugs into electricity; do not play with this anywhere near water!
    • Easy to use
    • Not very discreet
    • Powerful

Care and Maintenance

Unplug this to clean it! We clean this the same as we clean most of our toys: rinse carefully if needed, spray with an antibacterial toy cleaner (ours says to let sit for a few minutes and rinse), then air dry. For this toy specifically, I am extremely careful about how I get the head wet. I don’t submerge it by any means. A wet washcloth works well. I also make it a point not to play with this toy for a few days afterward on the off chance I did get water where it shouldn’t be. Storage is simple as well. Since it is all plastic, it goes straight in a drawer or back into the box. If you have a large enough toy bag, use that! It measures over 12 inches not including the cord, so the bag would need to be very large!
    • Difficult to store
    • Easy to store

Packaging

This comes packaged in a cardboard box that has nothing even remotely sexual on it, making it something the kids could run across and not know they had just found a sex toy (unless you keep it with a pile of dildos or something). While we don’t have any children in our house, I still think of these things for the rare occasion we have visitors!
    • Discreet looking packaging
    • Minimal
    • Would make a nice gift
Follow-up commentary
Where’s the “I still love it” option?

This is one of those things that gets ignored for a while in favor of the smaller toys and/or other items to review. It tends to make all the rest feel “insignificant” after using the Hitachi. Nevertheless, we do opt to bring this one out from time to time.

Nothing has changed since I wrote my review, the wand still plugs into the wall and provides minutes of fun (if I use it any longer at one time, I don’t think I would be able to stand up for a week!)

There are no batteries to change so you don't have to worry about them leaking.

The only real downfall to the Hitachi Magic Wand is that it is hard to clean! We recently remedied that in this house by purchasing a small package of baby wipes and shortly after that, a package of After Glow Toy Wipes. Using the wipes on the head of the Hitachi makes cleaning this one up so much simpler.

Never thought about a dimmer switch. I have the fairly wand and I love how it has a scrolling wheel for the speeds rather just just High or Low settings.

  • Good alternative to Hitachi?
    • I had a rechargeable mini fairy wand, but last week it ended up breaking, and now I'm desperately looking for a similar type wand massager. I've looked at a couple, but I'd really like some input on which massager people are recommending. Thanks!
    • I have 3 wand massagers that I use at times. There are things I love and hate about all of them. The hitachi is the most powerful one, but it is so loud! The Wahl 2 speed is also great. It is the quietest and I love how rumbly the vibes are! But none of the attachments are quite right for me. If I could only have one wand I would get Inspire. It has a button that you press and release when the power is at your desired strength. In stead of just 2 speeds like the hitachi or the wahl you have control over how much power you want to use. The Inspire has a detachable silicone head. My complaints are that it gets hot after about 20 minutes, at at the higher speeds it gets pretty loud. Your toy was rechargable, but the wands I listed all plug in and have more power. Good luck with your replacement!

Ooh, thanks! Yeah, the rechargeable wands tend to get really hot too, plus it would die after 20-30 minutes, so I needed to stay near an outlet at all times. Noise isn't really an issue for me (at least not right now). The one I had before had an adjustable wheel for vibration intensity, but to be honest, I always turned it all the way up and never changed it, so maybe I don't really need adjustable speeds.

I've never tried any of the detachable heads. Are they worth buying?

  • Will it be out of stock until the sale is over?
    • Ekk! It is out of stock again! I keep missing it. I finally have enough to buy it but I guess the discount made it sell like crazy. Does it typically not come back in until the sale is over?

Panicing a bit because I'm moving soon and will need to purchase it within the next week.
    • You can open a support ticket from your account dashboard to ask about it. If they know when it'll be coming in they'll be happy to tell you.
    • Perfect! Thank you!

  • Strength
    • Are there any stronger vibrators out there?
    • Quote: Are there any stronger vibrators out there?
Probably not for less than fifty dollars. A friend of mine is saving for the Sybian or The Rock Box. I can't speak from experience about either of those vibrators though. However, if you want something similar to the Hitachi, I would suggest either The Wahl or a Fairy Wand. I own the Hitachi, Wahl, and Fairy Mini but highly suggest the Wahl. It is the most rumbly of the three and is nearly silent.

I think the Hitachi is the strongest vibe i know of.

  • Hitachi Wand Vs. Acyvube
    • Is the hitachi better than the acuvibe for anyone who has had the chance to try both? I'm under the impression that they are essentially the same thing but maybe I'm wrong...
    • I have had both, and they are really both very good toys. The main difference really is that the Acuvibe is rechargeable and can be used cordless, while the Hitachi must plug in to work. Personally, I think that the Hitachi is slightly stronger, and it has definitely outlasted my Acuvibes - I have had two, and they both broke down after about six months or so.

We are going on 3+ years on the acuvibe. The shell is starting to crack but it still functions great, I just wanted to know if we should switch when I do want to buy a new one. More powerful sounds good :)

  • The Size !!!!!!!
    • Does the size get in the way ??????? It's so BIGGGGGG........
    • In the way of what, exactly? It's not really a toy for couples play and actually it's not even designed for masturbation but has become the Holy Grail of vibrators through decades of word of mouth.
    • Quote: Does the size get in the way ??????? It's so BIGGGGGG........
It's really only meant for external use. So if you are talking about insertion it probably would be a bit big.

  • Universal
    • Is there a head set for universal attatchments anyone knows of?
    • There are a few. If you search the site you can find a couple.
    • Quote: Is there a head set for universal attatchments anyone knows of?
I don't know if I understand the question, but the attachment we bought for our Hitachi is a "universal" attachment that we bought from another store. It's too "floppy" for me, but is a nice g-spot attachment, or would be if it was a little stiffer!

  • Bullet Vibes that rival the Hitachi Magic Wand
    • Hello, everyone!

Recently I've sold my Hitachi to a friend, and I've been on the market for a new clit vibe. I'm one of those girls who has a "clit-o-steel&quo t;, so I can't really get off unless I have something powerful on my clit. I bought a LAYAspot by FunFactory, thinking it would be a nice, powerful bullet to use when I'm with my partner, and I realized that it barely even packs a punch!

I guess I'm being a bit picky. I don't want something that's as strong as the Hitachi's HIGH setting, but something kind of inbetween the two, one that has a few nice, strong modes.

I was looking at the more expensive clit vibes- JeJoue's MiMi and Lelo's Siri. Do you think that they would be strong enough? Do you recommend anything? Thanks guys!

U had the flexi anal rod prior to the Hitachi..It is strong as well, and it probably right between the hitachi hi and low... I actually prefer the two setting on Hitach..SHIT and OHH SHIT.. The flexi rod has about 4 if i'm not mistaken..Plus it is flexible as well.. Costs about 25.00

Its on a review of mine already..

    • This is by far the best purchase I've made. My wife has a tough time reaching orgasm and needs the intense vibrations for her to climax. The Hitachi far exceeds this task, she doesn't use any other toy now, always reaches for the Hitachi. Just need to get her the G-spot attachment and she is set up. Thanks again.
    • I completely agree. The Magic Wand is the best vibrator ever.

  • Have you ever used a wand?
    • HI I was wondering if you have ever used anything like the Fairy Wand? I have used the baby fairy wand but its tiny... the size of the larger ones kind of intimidate me ... what are your thoughts on them and should I get one?
    • I dislike most of them intensely. They're too strong, too big and they make my whole vulva - as well as my hands - feel numb.

      Many folks love them, though!
    • I used the Wanachi Mini, which I really liked. Unfortunately it fell apart, it seems mine wasn't the only one either. I did contact Pipedream though and they seem eager to correct this problem!
