My favorite lip balm! (Lemon, Strawberry Sorbet, Honeysuckle)

Evolution of smooth's Smooth Sphere Lip Balm has replaced Burt's Bees as my go-to balm! It smells and tastes great, comes in eye-catching, durable packaging unlike any other balm I've seen, and contains mostly natural ingredients! Since buying, I've been recommending this product to everyone I know, with the exception of my vegan pals.

Use

Evolution of smooth's Organic Lip Balm (or Lip Balm Smooth Sphere, as it is listed on their website) is a delicious, 95% natural, 100% organic lip balm. Available in a variety of great scents and flavors, it is an excellent product designed to hydrate your lips, and give them a long-lasting feeling of smoothness. Due to its colorful, high-quality packaging, it would make an excellent gift for a woman or man of any age.

In addition, this balm is gluten-free, phthalate-free, the Lemon Drop flavor contains 100% natural flavoring, and evolution of smooth does not test on animals!

ALLERGIES: all varieties of this lip balm contain both coconut oil and sunflower seed oil. I do not have allergies to anything that might turn up in a product like this, so I cannot verify whether or not this lip balm will cause an allergic reaction of any kind. Also, vegans should note that this balm is beeswax-based, and not appropriate for them.

Texture / Consistency / Thickness / Viscosity

The texture of this balm is great! It is solid in form, and very smooth. It is extremely easy to apply - your lips glide right over it!

Some people have found the shape of the balm to be awkward during application at first. I have found that, contrary to the advice on the packaging ("Twist off top. Pucker up. Smooth on. Smile."), the best way to apply this lip balm is with your mouth slightly open, placing the balm between your lips and moving it from side to side. This method feels very natural to me, and I haven't had any problems with application. However, I have really small lips, so people with bigger lips may find the normal method of application works well for them.

I found Smooth Lip Balm Spheres to have a slightly thinner feel to them than other beeswax-based balms, but it still gives great coverage and is long-lasting. Beeswax-based lip balms have always been my favorites, and this one is a definitely no exception.

Taste / Aroma

This balm comes in a variety of scents, and I love this product so much that I'm buying up every flavor I can! When I try more flavors, I will update this review accordingly. In all the balms that I have used so far, the smell is very strong (in a good way!) on application, but becomes faint within a few minutes. The taste tends to be less strong than the smell, but lasts much longer.

Strawberry Sorbet: It took me a moment to place the scent of this balm. It smells exactly like a strawberry fruit gummy! Not the rubbery ones with 5% juice, but the delicious 100% juice ones you can get at organic stores and Asian markets. Yum!

Lemon ("Lemon Drop", according to the packaging): In addition to being SPF 15, the lemon balm smells like lemon curd, or warm lemon cookies! Yum! It is neither overly sour nor overly sweet, and in no way smells like a lemon cleaning product. Delicious!

Honeysuckle: Just like it sounds! This balm brings back memories of the honeysuckle trees that were in the yard of my childhood home. Sweet and flowery, it is my favorite scent so far.

I would recommend all of these flavors to anyone — they're awesome! I hate artificial flavors, and the fact that some of these boast 100% natural flavoring (out of these, only the lemon) is a huge plus for me. Did I not mention that? They do! It's awesome, especially because I have a mild allergy to a certain artificial sweetener. As I noted, the Strawberry Sorbet does not taste like a fresh strawberry, but more like a candy flavored with natural strawberry juice, which is fine by me since they marketed it as sorbet flavored. However, if you want a product that tastes completely natural, I'd steer you away from the Strawberry Sorbet and toward the Honeysuckle.

Performance

This balm performs extremely well! I had to force myself to stop reapplying it just for the feel and scent of it to see how long it would last after a single application, and the results were surprisingly good. This balm leaves your lips feeling hydrated for several hours before requiring reapplication.

This organic, beeswax-based balm feels very light once applied, and does not feel at all oily or greasy.

Packaging

The packaging on this product is awesome! The colors vary by scent, from a watermelon-y dark pink for the Strawberry Sorbet, to pale sea foam blue-green for the Honeysuckle, to a bright, cheerful yellow for the Lemon. Across the board, each packaging's color pops with an eye-catching vividness. I can't express how cute these things are — unlike the boring tubes you can get with some lip products, I would be proud to stick this on my desk at work, my dresser or bathroom sink — anywhere! Plus, unlike a tube you don't have to worry about them rolling away and getting lost.

Size comparison

This balm comes in a soft-yet-solid plastic sphere with a flattened bottom and a twist-off top. When you first purchase it, it will be wrapped in a see-through plastic ring with the product information on it. This information will include any special features (for instance, the lemon balm's SPF 15 or the tangerine balm's medication) as well as the basic information for the spheres in general.

Each sphere contains 25 ounces (7 grams) of balm, which is curved on top to match the shape of the packaging. As you can see in one of the pictures earlier in this review, there is a opaque white plastic layer inside the lid to catch any reside from the balm itself. There is an impression of a thumbprint in the side of the balm where the base meets the lid, allowing you to hold the product naturally — if you're right-handed, that is. It probably wouldn't work as well for southpaws, but it's a nice touch nonetheless.

I was unable to open this product with one hand, but the fact that you won't have to worry about this product opening in your purse or backpack makes up for that.

"Eos" is engraved on the top and base of the sphere, while all the rest of the product information is exclusively on the clear wrapper, so hold on to it if you're going to want to check the ingredients later on. The product information states that Eos balms are made in the USA, and lists the many ingredients. A small sticker on the base will list the active ingredients, if any.

The spheres fit very comfortably in the palm of my hand. I do have large hands for a woman, but my sister's ladylike hands held this product easily as well. They are small enough to be a great addition to any purse, and sturdy enough to survive the trials of a college or high school student's backpack. The soft plastic can become scratched, but the coloring goes all the way through and it is very thick, so you won't have to worry about unsightly white marks if it does come into contact with something sharp, and I'd bet it would take a very sharp knife to cut all the way through.

Personal comments

I love this lip balm! It has replaced Burt's Bees as my go-to lip balm, though I still keep a few sticks around for the trademark honey-scent. I recommend this product to literally everyone — my kid sister, my mom, my grandmother, my friends, and heck, even my ex! It's everything I could want, from the fun scents and flavors to the eye-catching packaging and natural ingredients. Everyone I've recommended it to has ended up loving it too, and I'll definitely be buying this product by the dozen come Christmas, as it will make an amazing stocking-stuffer.

My only issue is with the price. On Eden Fantasys, this product (as well as every other Eos product on this site) is listed as almost three times you can get on this product at major retailers and even the evolution of smooth website! It was a real dilemma for me when purchasing this product, but in the end I believe the high quality of this product combined with the fact that every flavor except tangerine is stocked make this balm worth even the inflated price. And apparently so does everyone else — it's only been available on this site for a week or two and already every flavor is sold out! I don't want to discourage anyone from buying this product here, but I feel it is fair to inform you of the difference in price.
