Never gonna give you up...

If I didn't have the Wahl, I'd buy it. If I had to share it, I'd buy another one. It may be ugly, only have two speeds, etc, but the vibrations are so ridiculously good that it's absolutely worth it. Plus, it's ridiculously quiet and no batteries!

Pros:
amazing deep/rumbly POWERFUL vibrations, super quiet, power cord, discreet, 7 attachments, cheap
Cons:
bulky, heavy, ugly looking, annoying to clean, not waterproof, only 2 speeds, power cord

Use

This is a clitoral vibe. Definitely. There are ways to use it on other areas (it's designed as an "All-Body Massager"), but it's sooooo good clitorally that I have a hard time using it anywhere else. But ok, if you had two of them or something, it works all over the body - there are lots of different attachments designed for different areas (I'll get more into this later). It is actually possible to use this vaginally/anally: one of the attachments is a suction cup, so you can attach a dildo (make sure it has a flared base if you're going to use it anally!) so long as it has a flat base. If not, you can also hold any of the attachments against a dildo and the vibrations are strong enough that they'll be transmitted. Both of these ways are super fun...but not as much fun as using it clitorally.

I think pretty much anyone could use this toy, unless they couldn't get over how clunky it looks. It *is* a little bulky and heavy to use in situations where you have limited space. The cord also limits how far away you can get from an outlet, which could become difficult. (Although you can get some really long extension cords...) It definitely won't work for you all the time, but it will be fantastic for the times when it does.

Material / Texture

The Wahl is made of PVC and plastic - unfortunately, the attachments are PVC (which is porous) and the body is plastic (which isn't). The body is hard and smooth. The attachments are softer, and the thinner ones are slightly bendy, but most of them are pretty stiff. There are seven attachments, which I'll write about in the next section, with various textures. They have a slight smell, which isn't noticeable unless your nose is right up against them - and even then it's quite faint. The body doesn't have any smell, and neither section has any taste.

The texture is mostly pretty basic (except for the "Scalp Stimulator," see below), and if you don't like the texture on an attachment, just don't use it, there are plenty of other options. I think pretty much everyone, including beginners, should be able to find an attachment that works for them.

Design / Shape / Size

The Wahl is "ergonomically designed" in two sections: a body and attachments. The attachments are pushed onto a rod inside the top of the body - it's really not hard to figure out. The body has a handle with a switch and a cord out the bottom, and a larger section at the top, which has the motor and a place to attach the attachments. The motor section is reeeally heavy, it can get difficult or awkward to hold up if you're using the Wahl for a long session. That said, I think it would be easy enough for a beginner - any awkwardness with this toy is due to the weight and design, not extreme texture or size. The only thing to be wary of is hurting yourself - if you're a beginner, stick to the low speed for a little first!

It comes with seven attachements: (the names are from the info pamphlet)

1. Knuckle joint attachment: this one is a triangular prism. It's designed to fit in between your finger or toe knuckles. This one is enjoyable but not my favourite - I think you'd enjoy it if you like slightly dispersed vibrations - since I prefer mine spot-on, this wasn't a favourite.
2. Muscle Kneading Attachment: this one is a wavy rectangular surface. This one might be nice if you enjoy a bit of texture on your clit - personally, it doesn't do too much for me so I don't use this attachment much.
3. General Body Attachment: this looks sort of like a squished suction cup: it's a circle with a hollow middle, if that makes sense. This one could be ideal if you don't like vibration directly on your clit - again, not my preference, so this one doesn't see much use.
4. Scalp Stimulator: this one is suuuuper textured - it's a circle with spikes on it. Its designed for your head, and it's really, really good at that. I have dreadlocks, so often head massagers don't work for me, but I managed to make this work, and it was worth it! So good. I have to admit I was too scared to use it on my clit, and I don't think I will - pointy combined with strong vibrations isn't a combination I'm anxious to try out.
5. Facial Vitalzer: this one is basically just a suction cup. I really like this one to use on other parts of the body since it's the most flexible and covers a lot of area at once. This attachment is also a good choice if you want to use the stronger setting, since it spreads the vibrations out, so aren't as overwhelming. This one can also be used with dildos that work with suction cups - just suction the attachment to the dildo and away you go! I couldn't try this since I don't have any suction compatible dildos (yet).
6. Deep Muscle Stimulator: this one is a little nub surrounded by two circles. I really enjoy this attachment - the outer circles help disperse the vibrations, so you can use it on a specific spot without it becoming too strong.
7. Spot Applicator: this one is my absolute favourite attachment. I really like pinpointed vibrations and this attachment lets me put them exactly where I want them. It can be too much on the high setting: I'm pretty sure you could hurt yourself, so be careful!

Since the Wahl is designed as a body massager, it looks discreet enough that it could probably be used for travel without awkward questions.

Functions / Performance / Controls

The vibrations are what really makes the Wahl so wonderful. First of all, they are incredibly deep and rumbly - think the complete opposite of those awful buzzy vibes that just numb your clit. I can actually leave the Wahl on my clit as I'm coming, which I haven't been able to do with any other toy as it's too irritating. Secondly, the vibrations are extremely strong. The Wahl only has 2 speeds - low and high steady vibrations - most of the time I can only use the low setting, which is stronger than pretty much all of my other vibes. I tend to prefer stronger vibrations clitorally, but the high setting is almost always too intense for me! If you get overwhelmed by vibrators easily, this might not be the toy for you (but don't confused being overwhelmed with getting numb from buzzy vibes!), but I wouldn't have any hesitation in recommending it to most people - and it's a must if you like strong vibrations!

The vibrations are focused in the attachments - the rod the attachments attach to is what vibrates. You can feel the vibrations if you're holding onto the top of the body, but hardly at all if you're holding onto the handle. I've never had my hands go numb from using this toy.

The Wahl is also ridiculously quiet - the first time I turned it on I had to touch it to make sure it was actually working. The low setting can't be heard at all from under a blanket, and while the high setting is a bit louder, there's no way it would be heard behind a closed door. There are a couple of exceptions - it can be louder if it's pressed against something solid (since it makes that vibrate too), or if the power cord is against the handle. Occasionally the power switch with rattle, but only if it's held at certain angles. You still won't hear it behind a closed door, in any case.

The switch is easy to flick with your thumb if you're holding the Wahl by the handle - if necessary you can turn it off immediately. My switch, unlike the pictures on the product page, is white instead of blue. It's a sliding switch that you push to change levels - super easy to figure out.

The Wahl is powered with a power cord that plugs directly into the wall. Personally, I love this, since I have an easily accessible plug right next to my bed, but it does limit the situations you could use this toy in. The other disadvantage of a power cord is that it can be pulled out of the wall unexpectedly - which can be very upsetting!

The Wahl is not waterproof at all. Just don't try it!

Care and Maintenance

This toy is kind of annoying to clean. The attachments, since they're just PVC, can be submerged in water with no problems, but some of them have crevices that can be tricky to get clean. I use soap and water, but a toy cleaner would work just as well. The body is not waterproof at all - this isn't a huge deal since chances are it's not going to get super dirty, but I do recommend wiping it down with a damp cloth or toy wipes to keep things sanitary. Ideally you should let the attachments dry out thoroughly before use, but I've gotten impatient before and haven't had any problems. (But don't follow my bad example.) Remember that PVC is porous, so even if you clean the attachments, you shouldn't share them without precautions.

I store the attachments in a cotton bag I made (so as not to loose them), and the body in a drawer without a bag. The body is fairly bulky (especially since it has a power cord attached to one end) but since it doesn't really look all that much like a sex toy (and is pretty sturdy) finding somewhere to keep it shouldn't be too tricky.

Because the attachments are PVC, you can use silicone or water based lubes with them. Since this is really an external toy, I tend to not use lubricant.
    • Hard to clean

Packaging

Because the Wahl is designed as an "All-Body Massager" instead of a *ahem* personal massager, the packing is discreet from one perspective. It's basically packaged like an appliance, extremely un-sexually, in a cardboard box with information about the attachments, uses, etc. It's un-discreet for exactly the same reason - there's a picture of it on the box, along with things like "2 speeds provide fast relief. Low: Soothing Relief, High: Deep Penetration." So if anyone who sees the box knows you like sex toys, they could probably figure it out.

There's a pamphlet inside the box with detailed information (in English and Spanish) about how to use it, warnings (including "Do not use massager on genital areas"), and what the attachments are for.

There's no storage bag or anything. You could keep the Wahl in the box, but a fairly bulky cardboard box, so it's probably better to find alternative storage.
    • Recyclable
    • Very informative
Follow-up commentary
This is still my favourite clit vibe. It's seriously ridiculously good. Plus, I shaved my head, so I can use the scalp attachment on my head now! It's so worth it, oh my goodness.

Anyway, if you don't have this yet, you should get one. Because it's still as good as I originally said it was.

Good review. I'm glad you love it. This is my favorite toy, hands down. (I think Wahl needs to pay me to promote this toy, as I talk about it every day.)

I have used every attachment clitorally, as well as used it as a body massager, and we even have the one with the heat attachment which is really helpful for arthritis. (My husband has arthritis pretty badly, and although he prefers the Hitachi for his massage, he does like me to use the heat attachment on particularly his hands. I wish Eden would carry the Wahl with the heat attachment.)

Anyway, I have used all the attachments. My favorite is the "Muscle Kneading" one, the "Spot applicator" along with the "Deep Muscle Stimulator." We also like to use the scalp attachment (with the points on it) on my clit, when we're feeling especially kinky. It doesn't hurt, but is very stimulating.

The warning not to "use on genital areas" was placed on the instructions a few years ago, when the legend says that a Catholic Priest was on the board at Wahl and found out people were using the unit sexually and tried to STOP people from doing so. Sad, isn't it? It is perfectly safe for use on "genital areas."

Thanks again for your review. I always feel happy when I win an other convert to this fantastic product.

  • wahl for someone who needs to be discreet?
    • i'm considering giving my partner some special gifts for her birthday next year and introducing her to toys (she's not nearly as adventurous as i am.) i want a classic vibrator for her so that she can familiarize herself with what she likes, and the wahl massager looks pretty perfect for that.

her bedroom is upstairs in an old house and i'm wondering if, from anyone who has experience with the massager; it could be heard downstairs when being used in an upstairs room. i don't have any way to test with toys of my own, as my house is very different from hers and we're rather long-distance right now. i want to gift her something awesome, not something that could lead to an awkward situation with her family )8

any experiences with the noise the wahl makes would be appreciated! the same goes for other classic/versatile vibrators. thanks!

I live in a dorm with vents and paper thin walls and mine makes so little noise that it doesn't even need to be drowned out with music. If she is unfamiliar with toys, however, this may be too strong. Although not as quiet, a kit like this may be less intimidating. That aside, I LOVE my Wahl and think every woman should own one so it's now or later for your partner : )

thank you very much for your input!!

yeah, the power may prove too much for her. i know she has sensitivity problems like i do (where she needs a LOT of stimulation) but i don't know what her definition of 'strong' vs 'too strong' would be, especially only having used her hands before!

the beginner kit looks ideal, but she has a really limited cashflow and keeping it in batteries would be hard :( maybe i'll surprise her with a mia instead? it's rechargeable, and while it's not as versatile as an insertable it would probably be way less intimidating than the wahl for now :D

i don't own any of these (although i'll probably collect them in the future :P) but from what i understand they're all about equal power; but the wands are more concentrated and loud.
    • I find the Whal two speed is best for one reason, the pounding high setting which is the best I've experienced. I haven't found any other vibrator with the same vibration frequency and including the other Whals.

  • Good Vibrations
    • I'm done with the battery scene and looking for something more substantial but I want a vibrator with the right type of vibrations. One review said this product had a "buzzy" setting opposed to the Hitachi with deep throbbing vibrations. What are other comments on they type of vibrations this massager has? Living in a dorm, I need a more quit toy than the Hitachi but would also prefer the deep vibes. Thanks very much for the input

I have not used the hitachi, so I can't compare, but I would describe this one as "buzzy".

It is quiet when muffled but I still wouldn't use it with a roommate in the room! I would look into the Mystic Wand as well before I made a purchase. Or one of the Fairy Massagers. Good luck!

Oh, and the Wanachi! That is a more budget friendly option too. I don't know about the type of vibrations, but again I have heard/read very positive thing regarding the wanachi, mystic wand, and fairy products!

    • It seems no one is concerned about the Pthalates in the PVC attachments for this thing (material safety 2). Am I missing something?
    • That's a good question.

I think it's because the attachments are designed for external use only.

Well yeah it not designed for "special areas" but if you use it down there it seems like it would be 'unsafe'...? If its just being used on the clitoris and surrounding areas it would still touching porous tissue. I'm just curious since no one mentioned it in their review
