Save Your Money: Skip This One!

Disappointing is the best word I can come up with to describe my experience with the PicoBong Massage Oil Candle. A slow, half burning candle with an almost imperceptible scent that leaves an unpleasant waxy residue is less than I expected from a line that originates from a reputable company such as Lelo. Take my advice and save your money for something with a little better quality. You will thank me in the end.

The PicoBong Massage Oil Candle was the first product I have owned from Lelo, and I was less than impressed. I had heard such fantastic things about Lelo products that I was happy to add this one to my cart as an extra, despite the rather steep price tag for such a small candle. Let's get on with the important stuff, shall we?

I chose the Apple/Cinnamon scent as apple is one of my favorite year-round scents. The candle came in a small, sealed aluminum tin and wrapped in a strip of cardboard. I found the cardboard to be both unnecessary and wasteful, and promptly threw it in my recycle bin. The tin was sealed with a sticker that left a very unpleasant, sticky residue along the edge of the tin. I was only able to smell the unburned candle when I placed it directly under my nose and inhaled. Though faint, the apple/cinnamon scent was very pleasant and reminded me of the winter holiday season. The wick of the candle is a bit shorter than most of the other candles I own, but lit without a fuss. The candle is made of Soy Wax, Shea Butter, Apricot, Kernel Oil, and Perfume. Those with sensitive skin please be aware that the term "perfume" when used in manufacturing context can cover any number of ingredients that are used to create the scent of the candle. Soy wax candles tend to burn much slower than traditional paraffin wax candles, and I found this to be true with these candles as well. I had to wait for around an hour before I had enough wax melted to perform any type of massage on my husband. Soy wax also burns at a much lower temperature than paraffin wax, so there is less chance of a burn injury. Notice I said LESS and not NO chance. Please be responsible when engaging in any form of wax play. The candle burned into a deep, but small pool of liquid, leaving the surrounding edges completely firm. Since purchasing and using this product, I have discovered that soy wax has a "memory" and will only melt as far out as you allow the wax to pool the first time it is burned. In order to get the maximum use of your Massage Oil Candle, be patient and allow the wax to form a pool to the edge of the tin before cooling the candle or pouring any out for use. Unfortunately, I found that the scent of this candle does not get any stronger when the wax is melted. This was rather disappointing for me as I love scented candles.

I began by testing the hot wax on my hand to make sure it wasn't too hot to pour directly onto my husbands back. This was a bad idea. The warm wax felt fine on the skin of my hand, but was still too hot for my poor husband to handle. Learn from my mistake and allow the wax to cool slightly before pouring directly onto sensitive skin. The melted wax made for a pretty decent massage oil, at first. As the wax cooled it developed a very waxy, coated feeling on my husbands back and on my hands. This unpleasant feeling lasted long after I washed my hands with soap and hot water. I do have one good thing to say about the candle, well actually my husband does. He told me how much he enjoyed the warmth of the wax and that it helped relax his muscles quicker than if I had just used an oil for the massage. This, however, is not enough of an incentive for me to purchase this candle again, and especially not at the price they are listed. This is essentially a one use item for $5 a pop, a bit pricey for my blood. Overall, I was extremely disappointed with this product. I am also surprised that a company with such a high reputation, like that of Lelo, would put their name onto this product, even if it is a part of their more affordable line.
