Milk made smoothing white sugar scrub by Cake Beauty - review by Kira (stainedclear)

The Milk Made line from Cake is all about hydration and smelling delicious. The Milk Made scrub takes it a step further by not only providing hydration, but also exfoliation. It's a sugar based scrub that will take away dead skin cells with each use, revealing softer skin. It leaves behind a blend of coconut oil, shea and cocoa butters to deeply moisturize skin. It does all this while leaving behind the sweet smell of vanilla and raspberry with a hint of milk.

The Milk Made scrub is used in the shower. It is gentle enough to be used daily, but you can use it as needed as well. The best results will occur when used regularly.

Cake advertises that this product is free of parabens, phthalates, petro-chemicals, triclosan, sulfates, synthetic dyes, and GMO. However, you should still check the ingredients for any possible sensitivities or allergies.

This scrub is made of sugar granules. They are somewhat large in size. They are rough to the touch, but dissolve when rubbed in the skin and mixed with water (since they are sugar). It sits in a small amount of liquid that is made up of the hydrating oils and butters. This liquid falls to the bottom of the container leaving just the sugar sitting at the top. It is best to shake the container a little before use to dampen the sugar with the oils. Here you can see the scrub inside the jar without any shaking:

Unlike many scrubs, this one is not made up of a lot of oil or butter. It is almost all actual sugar. When applied, it does not feel sticky or greasy. It has a slick feel to it due to the oils and butters, but is not overwhelming like some scrubs can be.

The scrub is easy to get out of the container. Simply scoop up the desired amount with your hand.

The Milk Made scent is said to smell of vanilla and raspberries. If you've ever had a Special K Raspberry Cheesecake Bar, then you'll have a good idea of what Milk Made smells like. The scrub smells slightly different than the Milk Made body wash and hand creme. It smells more like vanilla and less like raspberry where the other two products smell more strongly of raspberry. The scrub also has a milk smell to it, which is not present in the other Milk Made products. It's a warm but sweet smell is created by the melding of warm but sweet vanilla and milk mixed with a sweet raspberry.

The scent of the scrub is semi-strong. It doesn't fill up the bathroom when used, but does cling to the skin after use. It cannot be smelled during use in the same way that the bath wash can be. Where the bath wash fills the bathroom during use, but quickly dissipates. The scrub scent seems to stay contained in a small area, but lasts a long time. It could be smelled on the skin strongly for about thirty or forty-five minutes and lightly about two and a half hours after use.

The first time Milk Made scrub is used, results are noticeable. However, the best results come with continued use. After about four days of use this scrub revealed incredibly smooth, baby soft skin. Lotions applied easier and seemed to sink into the skin better, making those more effective as well. Softer skin can be felt not only in the easy areas to soften such as the arms and legs, but also rougher areas like the elbows, knees, and feet.

This scrub does not leave behind as much residue as other scrubs. While there is a light oil left behind, it does not feel like the body has been in an olive oil bath after use. Rather, it feels more like a light mist of oil was applied to the body. Once patted dry with a towel, only the slightest hint of this oil remains on the skin which leaves simply a soft feeling, not an oily one. This is especially good for those who are touch or texture sensitive to oily or greasy products.

The scrub exfoliates well, but does seem to dissolve quickly. It does this more so on the upper areas of the body that are wettest in the shower. Because of the higher concentration of water, the sugar melts more easily. On lower areas of the body, the scrub lasted a longer and could be rubbed in more.

It should be noted that this is abrasive in nature. Those with sensitive skin may notice some redness when it is rubbed in. If irritation occurs, you should discontinue use.

Some sugar granules may remain, simply because they may be missed. These will rinse off easily in the shower. The oil left behind will not rinse off with water, as oil and water do not mix. However, if you rub rather than pat dry, much of the oil will be removed.

There is no external packaging on the scrub. The packaging is simply the scrub container itself. The front says "Cake Milk Made Exfoliating Body Scrub" in French and English. It is done in pink and white with girly scripting. The back has a blurb about the product and what it is supposed to do. It also lists the ingredients, as well as contact information for the company.





You get 20 fl. oz. or 1.5 lbs of scrub in the container. The container is pretty large and should last a long time, even if used regularly.

The ingredients are:

Sucrose, caprylic capric tryglycerides, parfum, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, cocoa seed butter, phenoxyethanol, caprylyl glycol, sorbic acid, tocopehryl acetate, water (aqua), hydrolyzed milk protein

Sucrose - Sugar.

Caprylic Capric Tryglycerides - An oily liquid made from coconut oil. Slows the loss of water from the skin by forming a barrier on the skin’s surface.

Phenoxyethanol - A glycol ether. Preservative.

Caprylyl Glycol - Plant derived or synthetic. Skin conditioning agent.

Sorbic Acid - Natural organic acid. Preservative.

Tocopehryl Acetate - Vitamin E acetate. Skin conditioning agent.

Hydrolyzed Milk Protein - Light amber non-viscous liquid. Increases hydration and elasticity in skin.

Milk Made is my favorite line from Cake. I don't think I've run into a Cake product I don't love; this scrub is another product to add to my list of must-have items.

I've always had a problem finding a scrub that I could use. I'm very sensitive to textures on my skin. I also have sort of sensitive skin. I found that salt scrubs burned me, while sugar scrubs were too high in oil content. I would leave the shower feeling like I'd been in an oil spill. While I liked the exfoliation, I couldn't use the scrubs because I just couldn't stand the feel of my skin afterward.

This scrub, like other Cake products, has the perfect balance. It does leave an oil on the skin; however, it's just the right amount. It's a light layer of oil that feels soothing, but not disgusting. The sugar gets rid of dead skin wonderfully, while the light oil and butter mix leaves skin soft and hydrated. After about four days of use, I noticed a dramatic difference in my skin. I even noticed that this helped my very rough feet, something that normally only a pumice stone will take care of.

My sensitive skin did redden the first time I used the scrub. My legs got a bit splotchy when I rubbed the scrub in very hard. After the first use, this didn't seem to happen again. Those with very sensitive skin may want to keep an eye out for this.

I love that the scent of this seems to last longer than the body wash. Milk Made is one of my favorite scents. It's warm and sweet all at once and has become a sort of aromatherapy for me since discovering it. I like that the vanilla is more featured in this scrub. Even though I don't like the smell of milk, it did add something comforting to the scrub's scent.

I really have nothing bad to say about this scrub. Now that I have it, I will purchase it when I run out. The results have been fantastic and since I've never been able to consistently use a scrub before I'm thrilled to have one added to my bath routine.
