Strong Fragrance

Overall, I think this is a great cleaner. However, if you are sensitive to a lot of cosmetics and toiletries or sensitive to fragrances, then proceed with caution!

extremely useful review
Before & After is simple to use. The directions simply say "1. Spray on...2. Wipe off...3. Have fun!" However, when I sprayed the cleaner on the toy, I found it to be a bit sudsy and bubbly, so I rinsed it off and followed it with standard soap and water.

I found the fragrance of this product to be very strong. It is quite sweet and flowery. This can be an advantage and a disadvantage. This cleaner was actually recommended to me because of it's strong smell as I was trying to salvage a toy with a very strong plastic smell. It did help with the smell of the toy, however, as someone who is sensitive to fragrances, I hesitate to use it when I am not trying to cover up another smell.

If you are trying to cover up the plastic odor of a toy, this cleaner is perfect. However, be advised that the smell comes from molecules of the material (often phthalates) breaking off in a gaseous form. If it can break off in air, then it can break off inside you, get into your blood, and cause damage. Phthalates, for example, have been correlated in some studies with endocrine disruption and cancer. Of course, this is not the fault of the toy cleaner, but be aware that covering up the smell will not cover up the danger.

In addition, since the fragrance covers up bad smells, it may cause you to miss residual material (e.g. fecal matter on anal toys). The fragrance is nice, but just be sure to examine your toys and wash them with soap and water after using the cleaner.

Before & After contains benzyl alcohol, a widely recognized allergen, and cocamidopropyl PG-dimonium chloride phosphate, which has been implicated as an allergen in some studies. Furthermore, it contains disodium EDTA, which can enhance the absorption of these chemicals by your body. That being said, it is free of L-Arginine, petrochemicals, parabens, and glycerin, all of which are known to cause irritation.

I have very sensitive skin and tend to be allergic to everything, but I am pleased to say that I did not experience any irritation. However, I would still recommend that those with sensitive systems proceed with caution.

Thank you for the review--some fragrances trigger migraines for me, so I'm glad that you mentioned the strength of the smell.

  • What does before & after do.. before you use it?
    • Is it both a lubricant and a sanitizer? how does that work?
    • It is not a lubricant but merely cleans the toys. When the toy is sitting around, it gathers fungal spores, dust, and bacteria.
    • Before you use it it sits there and looks pretty :P

In theory you're supposed to use it before you use your toys and then after you use your toys to ensure optimal cleanness. At least according to the bottle.

  • Before & After Toy Cleaner...
    • This one got lots of great reviews, but I've got a couple of questions for all you reviewers who use this. The description says you have to "spray, wipe, then rinse" but most of the reviews say no rinsing required. Can you guys confirm there's no residue if you don't rinse? One review mentioned it didn't clean the crevices of textured toys well. Anyone else have that experience? Would you say it replaces the soap & water routine completely?
    • Nah, it doesn't replace soap and water, in my opinion. It may be because I've used soap and water for so long, but I just don't see the benefit to spraying something and then wiping it off. I find the cleaner hard to wipe off on toys w/ texture, and maybe I'm nuts, but then I don't feel like a toy is really clean. It would do in a pinch, but I don't mind soap and water so that's what I go for 90% of the time.
    • I like the the idea of toy cleaner but I always wondered what exactly you wipe down with? What's a good cloth for that?
