A Decent Lube for Toys

Colt Slick Personal Lubricant is my new favorite for use with toys that require a water-based lube. With a generous amount for a reasonable cost, and long-lasting properties, I’m not sure I can think of a better water-based lubricant for the price.

Use

Colt Slick Personal Lubricant is a water-based lube that will work for most of your intimate needs. It’s part of the Colt Gear line, manufactured (in the USA) by California Exotics. You can use it during sex (as it’s condom compatible) or masturbation. Since it’s a water-based formula it works great with toys.

I know some folks are concerned about what ingredients go into lubes, so here they are: deionized water, glycerin, peg-8, aloe vera extract, carbomer 940, carboxymethyl cellulose, tetrasodium EDTA, methylparaben, and DMDM hydantoin. I’ve had people ask about parabens and glycerin in the past, so I thought I’d mention the components of this lube.

Texture / Consistency / Thickness / Viscosity

Colt Slick has a thin consistency, probably the thinnest I’ve tried, aside from the Probe Silky Light formula. While I think I prefer the Probe Silky Light overall (it honestly feels like gobs of precum), the problem I have with the Probe lubes is that they evaporate so quickly. What I liked about the Colt Slick is that while it had a thin, slippery consistency, it was long lasting. Even with a relatively lengthy toy session (15-20 minutes), I didn’t find the lube evaporating or growing tacky.

Having a thin consistency, the lube pours pretty easily. I ordered the 9 ounce bottle which comes equipped with a pop-up lid. I found that the lube drizzles out (not too forcefully) just by tipping the container upside-down. The thin opening in the top makes it easy to direct the flow of lube right where you want it without wasting too much. Still, with its runny consistency, I think I’ve overlubed my toys in every instance of using the Colt Slick. The excess lube wipes off easily with a tissue, so keep one handy if you don’t like a lot of extra lube dripping all over.

The lube is totally clear in color, and in its see-through container, the viscosity is similar to mineral oil.

To the touch the lube isn’t horrible sticky or tacky, but it’s easy to spread around once you’ve dispensed the amount you need. A small amount will stay put on a relatively stable surface, but if you’re applying Colt Slick to a toy or your cock it’s probably going to slide down over the surface if you use more than a very small amount. Again, this isn’t a thick lube, so it’s probably not the best choice if you like really viscous lubricants or want your lube to stay in one spot.

Taste / Aroma

The aroma of Colt Slick Personal Lubricant was not overly noticeable to me. Even when unscrewing the cap and inhaling directly from the bottle I didn’t really notice much of anything.

I did do a little taste test and can report that the lube tastes very bitter. If you’re prone to licking your partner’s lubed parts or need a lube that tastes great (for whatever reason), I’d take a pass on this one. There are certainly edible lubes that taste better and have more suitable ingredients for human consumption.

Performance

Performance-wise, Colt Slick is one of the longest lasting water-based lubes I have tried. To me, one of the big drawbacks of water-based lubricants is that they often evaporate quickly or become overly sticky after a few minutes. In both cases, reapplying the lube is the only way to remedy the issue. With Colt Slick, I was pleased to see how long it lasted, and how evenly coated it kept the toy and my cock. The insides of masturbation toys stayed nice and wet, and felt slippery from beginning to end.

I tried it briefly with hand-to-cock masturbation, but water-based lube is never my preferred choice for this activity. It wasn’t bad in this regard, just not good enough for me to say, “Wow, I need to start using this every time!”

With its thin consistency, it did make a bit of a mess on the toys I tried it with, but nothing too disastrous. After I was finished, I did notice things were a little stickier than they are with some other water-based lubes (many of which evaporate by the time I’m done, or soon after), so there was some minimal clean up involved afterwards. A little soap and warm water and there was no noticeable trace of the lube left over. Toys cleaned up easily as well.

Packaging

Colt Slick Personal Lubricant arrives in a wide, round, clear bottle with Colt Slick printed in red and black lettering. The black plastic cap has a pop-up top for easy, non-messy dispensing, but the cap also unscrews for access to the larger bottle opening if you want more lube quickly. The bottle is firm, but squeezes without any trouble. I like the fact that it’s wider than many lube bottles, so it doesn’t tip over as easily as some of the tall, skinny lube bottles I have. Even still, when the lube was knocked on its side inside my toy drawer, the cap was tight enough to keep it from leaking.

One nice thing about the product being in a clear bottle is you can see how much lube you have left.

Other than the product name, manufacturer and the ingredients list, there really isn’t much else to note on the packaging. While identified as a personal lubricant, there aren’t any sexual images that would make the packing overly embarrassing if a house guest saw it sitting out, or if you were traveling with it.
    • Can be opened with one hand
    • Does not leak
    • Easy to use / dispense

Experience

Personally, I prefer a silicone lube for sex and an oil-based lube for hand-to-cock masturbation, so I generally only use water-based lubes with toys, because of the compatibility factor. During a discussion about lubricants with a friend, he mentioned that Colt Slick is his new favorite (like me, he is a toy user), so when I saw the lube come up as part of a “kit deal” with a toy I had in my shopping cart, I decided to try it out.

The first thing I was impressed with is how big the (8.9 ounce) bottle is. It seems so much bigger than comparable lubes that cost about the same. Because of its thin consistency, I am probably using a little more with toys, but because the bottle is such a good size, I find myself being a little more generous when I’m drizzling it on or inside a toy.

The main drawback of water-based lube is it rarely feels as good against my skin as oil-based or silicone lubes. But Colt Slick wasn’t too bad. It created a nice “grab” with my textured toys, and its long-lasting properties allowed me to enjoy a 15-20 minute session without having to stop and re-lubricate, which is something that usually makes me lose my steam, especially if it happens repeatedly, or close to climax.

Again, it really didn’t do a lot for me during strictly hand-to-cock masturbation, but I really didn’t order the Colt Slick for that purpose. It’s compatible with every toy I have, and its long-lasting properties make it a really good lube for that purpose.

I haven’t yet tried it during partner sex but I definitely would. I believe since it lasts awhile without needing to be reapplied, it would work just fine for penetrative sex.
