Astroglide Was An Astronomical Fail!

Astroglide is adequate when there's nothing else to use or when you're still too fresh faced to be spoiled by more expensive or sophisticated lubricants.
Published: April 3, 2008
Pros:
It's cheap and easily accessible.
Cons:
It's way too slick and way too sloppy.

extremely useful review
I remember stumbling around in the health aisles at Wal-mart as an awkward teenager, grabbing a tube of Astroglide and stashing it in my basket under a box of hair dye. Six years later and I found myself buying a bottle in a moment of desperation because we ran out of lube.

Astroglide is a hot mess. I had forgotten how slick and sloppy it was. I'm one of those people that loves to use more lube than necessary, but the bottle just poured out all over the place. As the years have progressed, I've graduated onto better lubes yet, here I was with a face cloth in my hand trying to clean it up off my bed. Messes usually aren't a problem, but the spill was too big to be ignored and I didn't want to lay in it as I tried to get off.

When I finally used it, it took me back to my years of severe naivete.

Astroglide is pH balanced, unfortunately, that means it's slightly acidic from trying to mimic natural body fluids. If you have a yeast infection or are prone to them you're urged to stay away due to Astroglide's Glycerin content. A big plus though, while not sold on EdenFantasys, is that Astroglide now has a Glycerin & Paraben Free formula.

Not only is Astroglide an FDA approved sexual lubricant but it's also used to relieve the discomfort of vaginal dryness and provide lubrication during non-sterile medical examinations. I don't plan on performing any medical examinations, but it's nice to know I have that option. lol. It's also water based which means it's compatible with condoms, diaphragms, tampons, douches, and enemas. I can also use it on my silicone toys, I just don't know if I'd want to.

It was too sloppy to be pleasurable and hearing a "smacking" sound every time I moved my toy in and out of my ass became tiring. I'm a big girl now so I'm going to stick with my big girl lubes and leave this one to every awkward 18 year old out there who has yet to discover its possibilities.

It's adequate when there's nothing else to use or when you're still too fresh faced to be spoiled by more expensive or sophisticated lubricants. According to celebrity gossip, Barbara Walters may be able to recommend Astroglide to Rosie O'Donnell but I can't find myself able to recommend Astroglide to anyone.
Follow-up commentary
There seems to be a lot of debate over whether or not this is a good lube. It's not a "bad" lube but it's not a great lube. In my experience it can really be a toss up. I've found it to be mediocre at best, however, with there being 16 reviews on this I highly advise you to read them all. It's $12 and for some that may be a drop in the bucket, but if you have a sensitive vagina or you want to make sure you're getting your money's worth I'm asking you to do your research. Astroglide is not at all our first choice, it's an absolute last resort.. and that being said, we have used it and might again but only if there's nothing else readily at hand.

So which lubes do you suggest?

Liquid sex sensitive light is definitely at the top of my list because it's Glycerin free- Toy Fluid by Fun Factory is another goodie but that one does contain Glycerin.

Nice review Sleeping Dreamer - I should have known other reviewers on Edenfantasys would share my displeasure with Astroglide. Other lubes may be more difficult to find, but it is worth the effort as there are lots that are better than Astroglide.

Jimbo, it wasn't hard at all to agree with you on this particular lube.

Heh, great point--this lube is fine before you know any better.  My husband and I used it when we were first married 15 years ago, but now it would be for emergency-use only!

Dame, you're absolutely right. If you're naive about lubricants, Astroglide totally makes do. It's all acquired taste what we use now, we experimented and we learned a lot of lessons (like don't mix satin sheets with oil based products)... ;)

Does anyone have any questions about Astroglide?

  • Favorite lube?
    • I absolutely think astroglide is the best all-around lube on the market. Let me know what you think.

I would definitely agree with you there! I always used to use different KY ones and the occasional one from different surprise-party type companies, but there was always something about them that I hated. Finally I was introduced to astroglide and haven't used anything else since :D
    • Astroglide is ok, but I find it doesn't work that well for anal sex. I use Maximus for that, as I am naturally a wet person, and don't really need lube for anything else.

  • 98 Reviews? Are You Serious???
    • Can you believe there are 98 reviews on Astroglide? I was just browsing through lubes and thought I might find a good one to review, and I saw that it had 98!!! No kidding, check the page! What do you think of this, folks? Are you as surprised as me?
    • Most likely because reviewers starting out have to review cheaper items first. I'd guess that lubes and massage balms/oils would be many reviewers' first picks since they'd want to buy the stuff anyway. :P
    • A lot of people use Astroglide, so it doesn't surprise me. I reviewed it myself :)
