Astroglide "Green Cap" A safer alternative to a Classic product

This variation on a Legendary Lubricant is a good, lesser know formulation of the Classic product. Most allergens have been removed, so there is less chance of UTIs and yeast infections. Although watery, it provides excellent lubrication for all types of sexual activities and is compatible with most toy materials. This product is worth every penny, and is not expensive in the least. IMO, every Loving home should have a bottle of Astroglide "Green Cap" in the night stand.

Use

Astroglide "Green Cap" (as I like to call it) is a good, basic water based lube, without the glycerin and parabens that cause irritation or even trigger infection in some more sensitive users. This lube is good for PIV (penis in vagina) sex, for toy use, for masturbation with or without toys, and for anal sex. I have read it can be used as a massage gel, also. It can be used safely both inside and outside of both latex and polyisproine condom without harm to the prophylactic. I am assuming it is also safe with "Lamb" condoms, as they are similar to human tissue, but as they are not commonly used, I am not absolutely sure. Consult the condom package if you use Lambskin condoms for lubrication use.

This lube does contain two different glycols (Butylene Glycol & Propylene glycol) but these often seem the least irritating of the suspect additives.

Astroglide "Green Cap" is water based, so is compatible with nearly every toy available. It is not recommended for tub or shower play, as it washes away easily.

Texture / Consistency / Thickness / Viscosity

This product is a good deal more watery than regular Astroglide. It is not "thick" and does not "mound up" when placed on skin, and runs easily. It is easy to pour, comes out of the bottle easily. It stays in place very nicely for such a watery product and does its job lubricating, without too much worry about reapplication, unless long periods have gone by. It can be "revived" with a little water or saliva, if needed, or simply reapplied. It is not at all greasy, but does become sticky after some time and use.

Taste / Aroma

Astroglide "Green Cap" has no discernible smell, but it has a slightly sweet taste. This is due to the Xylitol, which is a sweetener used in sugarless gum. This chemical can be a laxative and too much Xylitol can give some people loose stools, but it would be difficult to consume enough of this product to experience this effect. Xylitol does not seem to work as a laxative when used directly in or on the anus, so that shouldn't be a concern.

Performance

Depending on body chemistry and usage, this product may or may not need to be reapplied. One application of about 6 to 8 drops on the penis and about the same on the anus can last through a good 25=30 minute session, with no need to reapply. When used with toys, vaginally, less can be used, and again, reapplication is variable.

The product does not seem to break down, as much as simply evaporates and absorbs and leaves behind a slightly sticky residue. Luckily, the residue is easily washed off with mild soap and water, or just water, if you do not like to use soap on your vagina. It is not necessary to wash this off, (as is needed with silicon based lubes) as it is water based, and should cause no harm if left until the next bath or shower, that morning or evening. But, if the stickiness bothers you, it is very easy to remove all traces of this product with very little effort.
    • Absorbs into skin nicely
    • Feels natural
    • Gets sticky

Packaging

A 2.5 oz bottle is packaged in a cardboard box with discreet and short instructions included. The bottle is nicely shaped, with a flip lid, and the curve of the bottle make it easy to hold on to with slick fingers. It is not difficult at all to open the bottle, nor to dispense drops (or rivulets) of product. The bottle flip top can be flipped open in a rush of passion, with one hand, and deposited or dribbled either onto a toy, or penis or the other hand for more direct spot application.

We have found that even after much use, the bottle does not seem to retain any greasy feel and the instructions and label have not been destroyed by any leaking product at all and can still be read as easily as the first day we bought the product. The bottle is small, so it would be simple to tuck into purse, pocket or bag for travel.

The bottle is well made and soft enough to squeeze, but seems very sturdy. This looks like any small bottle of cosmetic or hair product and could be left on a dresser or nightstand without drawing an eye.
    • Can be opened with one hand
    • Discreet looking packaging
    • Travel friendly

Special Features

Many users need a safe, low allergen lube. Too many have been bother by irritation of the vagina, anus, penis or other body parts by glycerin, parabens and other chemicals. This standard in the Lube Industry did us a great service by producing a product with safer ingredients, even if reapplication or stickiness may not be a trade off that many are willing to take on.

This product does NOT "warm" "tingle" "cool" "stimulate" or anything else. It just lubricates, which is what many users just want.

Personal comments

We bought this at a local grocery store pharmacy. I loved regular Astroglide, but learned that the glycerin contained in it was probably causing a rash of UTIs and yeast infections, in both My Man and myself. I was glad to see it was so easily available and it seemed a little less "clinical" than the old standby, KY, that we had been reduced to using.

This product has certainly been dripped onto our bed, and even the Egyptian cotton sheets showed no residue or staining. Neither have we seen any damage to any other fabric clothing, wood, or even the "pleather" on the bumpers on the sides of our water bed. It is a very safe product for seemingly all surfaces. The thing I like the least about it is the watery texture (I'd like something thicker) and the stickiness, which seems to develop over time. However, the ease with which this product is obtained, the price, the brand recognition, and the safety factor overrides these rather insignificant issues.

If Astroglide could come out with a thicker formula, keeping the glycerin and parabens out, it would make our day.

We have had the same bottle for several months, use it nearly daily and still have almost half a bottle left. This product goes a long way, at least for our uses.

Experience

Personally, we rarely use this for PIV sex ourselves. I often use it with toys myself, but during partner sex, I seem to not need it. Only occasionally, do we use it with partnered toy play, but it is a good product for this use, too. We do use it extensively (4 to 7 times a week) for anal sex, and it works well, holds up, and causes no irritation and provides enough lubrication to keep things smooth and comfortable.

I seem to notice the slight stickiness more than My Man does, so, while I am cleaning the toys after we are done, I run a warm wet washcloth, with a small amount of mild soap applied to it, over my lady bits and butt and feel clean immediately. My Man sometimes desires a switch after anal, which, of course requires thorough cleaning of his penis and any part of my body it has touched during anal. We use two washcloths, one soaped and one with warm water, if we do this in bed, or he just quickly jumps in the shower, and I clean myself off as described above, and we continue with other sexual activities, once we are both cleansed.

Follow-up commentary
I really liked this lube when we first found it. I still feel it's a good lube, but I have since found others that fulfill our purposes better. A few times, after using the Green Cap Astroglide glycerin and paraben free, I felt dry and uncomfortable; almost like I was getting a yeast infection, and I didn't like that. I have also had problems with how watery this lube is.

I still keep it in the cubby in our headboard but we reach for it less and less. We seem to be using other, thicker lubes nearly every time since we've been experimenting with new ones.

This lube is good for PIV sex and some types of toy play, and it's easily available, but we've found better, thicker lubes are better for anal sex, and then we just use them for anything else.

It's still a good lube, but we've moved on.

Awesome review, P'Gell! I may need to pick up a bottle of this, because every time I shift positions I swear I get an infection in my woohoo.
  • Contributor: P'Gell
Me too! The slight stickiness, which My Man never even notices, is totally worth the lack of antibiotics, Monistat, Femstat and "Sex Vacations" not to mention, avoiding the pain and itching.

I use the original Astrogilde. We may have to try this kind sometime.

Shannon, for texture and endurance, I really like original Astro a little better. (It's thicker and lasts a little longer.) But, if you are concerned about glycerin and parabens in your lube, the Green Cap is less irritating on your and your partner's tissues.

I think it's also good in the house, even if you CAN use the original with no irritation for when you are recovering from a vag infection or UTI or you feel irritated in any way while using Original.

Great review. My brother bought me a bottle of astroglide on my wedding day, but I don't remember which one it was. I just remember we threw it away after a while because of the watery texture. Maybe we should try this one, because we are still searching for an easy to obtain water based lube.

leather, I have to tell you. I haven't done a follow up on this yet. I still think this is OK, it was our first lube that didn't have glycerin and crap like that into it.

But, we've experimented more, and this lube IS pretty watery. (How we ever used it for anal sex, I don't know, but watery or not, it still worked) But, we've moved on to more thick lubes and really like them.

Right now, I actually prefer Sliquid's H2O Ride to this, for everything. I think I need to do a follow up on this stuff.

It isn't bad lube, but I have found some better, imo.

*snickers* your comment about it looking like a product bottle made me chuckle. My daughter found a small sample bottle of lube beside my bed and came to me and asked "mom, can I have this hand sanitizer?"

    Oh, Jobthingy, Slippery fingers!

One of our older kids (she's in her early 20s) saw the bottle on our headboard and just said, "Ew, gross. You and Dad are OLD." Nice kid.
