Lubricant discontinued

K-Y Jelly is an Original: Not bad, but not fantastic!

K-Y Jelly is an average lubricant. While it has its benefits, particularly in the medical field, it is not the best product available. If you are the type of person who likes simple lubes, with no fragrance or special taste, and only needs a little bit, you should give it a try. Otherwise, check into a different product.

Use

K-Y Jelly is the "original jelly," which is why I used it for my first lube ever. While it was not terrible, I have found lubricants that I enjoy more. However, this lubricant is useful for some.

Although this is not one of my favorite lubes, it does have its uses. K-Y Jelly is a personal lubricant that is thick enough to be used in a variety of ways. This includes masturbation (with or without toys), traditional sex, and anal sex. This lube is water-based, so it is safe for all types of toys, as well as for the body.

As I mentioned, K-Y Jelly is water-based, so it is not ideal for usage in the shower, bath, pool, or similar situations. Lubricants with a high water content wash off rather easily.

Lastly, it is important to mention that this lubricant is used by many medical facilities and personnel. So, if you need help inserting a tampon, douche, enema, or something of that nature, K-Y Jelly would be a good choice!

Texture / Consistency / Thickness / Viscosity

When you first squirt some of this lube out, it is pretty thick and feels sticky. Thankfully, it does become a bit smoother during use. Even so, it doesn't become runny, which was a major benefit!

It will allow for plenty of sliding action for the average person. However, if you are the type who needs a lot of lubricant, this is not the right product.

After sexual activity of any sort, you will definitely want to wash up and get this lube off of you. If it seemed sticky at the start, it is much more so afterwards. I have made the mistake of letting it sit on me for a while, and it was extremely uncomfortable.

I have found the best option for me, personally, is using a baby wipe after using K-Y Jelly for immediate cleansing. Therefore, I can stay in bed and cuddle or relax for a while. Afterwards, I wash with soap and water to get any leftover lubricant off of me.

Taste / Aroma

The taste of K-Y Jelly isn't good, but not completely disgusting either; definitely a bad taste. However, it was not intended to be used for oral sex, so I can't complain about that really. Your best bet is to keep it away from your mouth as much as possible.

The scent of this lubricant is non-existent.

Performance

When using this product, I have found it a bit difficult to determine the amount I actually need. If too little is applied, it dries up quickly and leaves me sticky. On the other hand, if I apply too much, it becomes too slippery. I have yet to find the happy medium with this product.

I have found the best use of this product to be for anal sex/play. It is thick enough coat your partner or toy and allow gentle insertion. Since it is water-based, it will work with any toy.

No matter what you use this lubricant for, I suggest cleaning yourself well afterwards. It tends to leave a sticky residue, which I find uncomfortable.

Personal comments

This was the first lube I had ever tried. Although it has its uses, I don't really use it anymore. Although it is far from the worst lube available, I have found other products that better suit my needs.
Follow-up commentary
I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with KY jelly, but there is nothing special about it either.

It is pretty sticky and thick, but some people may not have a problem with that. My biggest issue though is how slimy I felt after use; I immediately had to wash it off. If I didn't clean myself right away, the lube would dry up and leave weird clusters of goo.

List of ingredients:
Purified water, Glycerin, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Chlorhexidine Gluconate,
Gluconolactone, Methylparaben, Sodium Hydroxide.

This product is used for medical purposes and most doctors consider it safe to use. However, as you can see above, KY Jelly does contain parabens and glycerin. There are some people who avoid the use of these ingredients. Parabens have been linked to cancer (although, the chemical is not proven to cause cancer) and glycerin can cause UTIs for some people. The FDA has not found enough evidence to disallow the use of either ingredient. However, if you are concerned, there are many other lubricants on the market which are free of both parabens and glycerin.
