Love the Lube, but a little worried...

I love this lube. It is slippery, it comes with a handy pump, it has a realistic feel and look to it, and it makes for a pleasurable and smooth experience. But... if you are paranoid, like I am, you might want to think twice before applying it to a silicone based toy. This is the absolutely only reason I am giving it a four star review instead of a five star. This issue needs to be clarified by the company.

Great feel, decently long lasting, realistic feel and look, slippery and smooth.
Cons:
Contains small amount of silicone, possible toy problems?

extremely useful review

Use

I love the feeling of this lube, as does my wife. It is smooth and silky, just as described. It is water based, so it does dissipate eventually. But instead of leaving behind a sticky mess, it just kind of evaporates. I would suggest this lube to anyone looking for a non-staining, easy clean up, smooth lubricant.

But here is the one problem:

I recently found out that Liquid Silk does contain a small amount of silicone. There seem to be a few select instances where this has caused problems with silicone toys. Although I have never experienced this problem personally, it has made be a bit leery of using this lube the way I used to.

Texture / Consistency / Thickness / Viscosity

This lube seems a bit thicker than your typical water based lubricant. It stays slippery for a decent period of time, although it does evaporate eventually. It has a very natural feeling to it, and in my opinion, it doesn't leave you feeling greasy or sticky the way other lubricants might.

Taste / Aroma

It smells fine, but I've heard it has a distinctly bitter taste. Personally, I refrain from tasting non-flavored lubricant whenever possible. I have never run across a non-flavored lubricant that I found delicious, so I don't see a problem with it being bitter. It's not really made for oral to begin with.

Performance

Liquid Silk has always performed well for me. My wife and I love it. Additional lube does need to be applied with time, as water based lubricant does dry up, unlike silicone lubricants. But overall it provides for a smooth and comfortable experience.

I don't feel a great need to wash up after using Liquid Silk, as it doesn't seem to leave behind much of a tacky or slippery feeling after it has dried up. It does leave behind a bit of white residue that can be easily rinsed off.

Packaging

I purchased the 250mL size, which comes in a convenient pump bottle. This makes it easy to re-apply when necessary. There is no fumbling to unscrew slippery lids or pop open flip tops.

The only thing I don't like is the fact that there is no warning about the silicone present in the lube or possible interactions with toys. I feel that this should be addressed considering the fact that the lube is marketed as water-based (it says so right on the bottle). Water-based is supposed to be safe with everything. That is the primary reason people buy it. So if there is a possibility that it is not as safe other water-based lubricants when it comes to interactions, I feel there should be some sort of warning.

Experience

My wife and I have had nothing but good experiences with this lube. We have used it with the Tantus O2 Revolution and have had no negative interactions between the toy and the lube.

However, due to the information that has been presented to me, we will be discontinuing use of the lube with our toys (which are all silicone based). I would hate to ruin an expensive toy just because Liquid Silk is one of my absolute favorite lubes. I can deal with another water based if it means being sure our investments are kept in good condition.

Also, I visited Liquid Silk's website hoping they would have information posted addressing this issue, but I had no luck of hunting any down. It seems that a good amount of websites and stores promote Liquid Silk as a safe for silicone water-based lubricant. I have heard this both in sex shops and online. However, the confusion surrounding this topic is enough to make me think twice, even though I personally have never had any problems whatsoever.

I am kind of wondering if the people who have had problems had toys that were a strange silicone blend or a lower quality grade of silicone. I have heard that makes a difference when it comes to negative interactions.
Follow-up commentary
Well, all the good things I stated in my original review still hold up, with the added bonus that I've tested it out on Vixskin, and it's compatible!

I think the only people that are having compatibility problems may have toys that are not 100% Premium Platinum Silicone (i.e. medical grade silicone), as lower grades of silicone (or silicone mixed with other materials) are more likely to react badly, even with the very small concentration of silicone present in Liquid Silk.

So, you can still do a test patch to make sure, but so far any medical grade silicone that we've come across works perfectly well with Liquid Silk.

Thanks all for reading! At least Liquid Silk may help to weed out toys that aren't as high end as they claim to be.

  • Liquid Silk and Silicone Toys
    • So, while looking through highly rated water based lubes, I came across Liquid Silk. Aside from the bitter taste, no one seems to have any complaints.

However, I noticed that the fourth ingredient is Dimethicone - and I was wondering what everyone's experience with this and silicone sex toys was? Is the silicone in Liquid Silk a small enough portion that it has no effect on toys, or is it generally not recommended for that type of play?

Or does the bonding potential of silicone lubes have more to do with the type/quality of silicone than anything else?
    • That's a really good question because Dimethicone is a silicone.

Basically it should be ok to use as long as the toy is made of medical grade silicone. There should, in theory, be no reaction. I, personally, wouldn't want to test that out on my own toys though. You can do a patch test on a small part of the toy. The reaction should be immediate if there is going to be one.

      Anyone else know about this?
    • I have had liquid silk react to a silicone toy. Which sucks because I love it. :(
