extremely useful review
When I started getting into sex toys, I only trusted my local feminist sex shop because they are obsessed with only selling 100% body safe products. So of the hundreds and thousands of lube choices out there, I narrowed it down to a few selections that they had deemed worthy.

Probe was it because I was looking for a thick water based lube to use with my silicone ass toys. You want a thick lube for anal play because it will stay where you put it more easily than thinner lubes. Probe Thick and Rich works beautifully for this. I have used it time and time again and have gotten great pleasure from sticking things up my butt using this great lube. And you really do want to use a lubricant when sticking anything up your butt. It just feels so much better and prevents anal tearing (ouch!).

I was also impressed with the super minimal ingredients list. First ingredient, purified water. Then we have vegetable glycerin which is a carbohydrate that is derived from plants. Herbalists use vegetable glycerin to make botanical extracts for medicine making. It's very safe. Polyehylene oxide is a common ingredient in lubricants and skin creams. It has a very low toxicity and even has some medical applications. Finally grapefruit seed extract is used as a preserving agent. Just take note if you have an allergy to grapefruit!

This lube is also great because it is tasteless! So many lubes out there have a bitter or astringent taste or artificial flavouring. That means that switching from manual or penetrative sex to oral can be a rude awakening to the taste buds. If you still want to be able to enjoy the taste of your partners sweet juices after teasing or a good pounding, this lube could be for you.

Whereas many different kinds of lubes have shortcomings, water based lubricant can do it all. It's safe for vaginal, anal and oral sex. It's also safe to use with all different kinds of toys. What else do you want? Oil based lubes and those that contain sugar aren't so good for vaginal. Silicone based lube can't be used with silicone toys. Really the only thing you can't do with water based lube is use it in the tub or shower. The water will wash it away. On the flip side, a little water can also be used to reactivate this lube if it's drying up. You can even use a little spit or a spray bottle for this! Sounds great in the summertime...

And now we come to the not quite so good stuff. Probe is maybe a little too sticky for its own good. It leaves little trails that look like spider web when its wet. When it dries it leaves a tacky residue. You can easily wipe away the residue with a damp cloth or toy wipe, but it does get a little annoying at times. I'm glad that I've discovered Sliquid's lubricants as they don't have this problem. Also it would be really nice if the smaller size of Probe's thick and rich came with a pump dispenser. Even though it's the smaller size, 8.5 oz. is quite a lot of lube!

If price is important to you, this is one of the most economical lubes you're going to get. Sure it costs $12, but that's for 8.5 ounces! Even with very heavy use, that amount is going to last you a long time. I find with frequent use that this bottle lasts me about a year. Oh and isn't that year sweeter for it!

I'm giving Probe 5 stars. Even though the tackiness is annoying at times, it's worth it for how great this lube is.
Follow-up commentary
I've moved on to Sliquid Sea as my favourite water based lube. This one works great, but that tacky finish is such a turn-off!

Nice review. And you aren't kidding about the "trails" it leaves. It works well, but it's some very gooey stuff.

  • Vegetable Glycerin?
    • I've been trying to find a nice lube with safe ingrediants but so far i've found very few and even those have been question. I've read that Vegetable Glycerin is made from vegetable oil and is good for the skin. But i've read that Glycerin can cause skin irritant in some people and in concentrated solutions can damage the mucous membranes. Is there a deffernce with Vegetable Glycerin and just plain Glycerin? or is it the same thing? Is it safe enough to use in lubes? What other ingrediants should i be warry about?
    • Glycerin is glycerin no matter where it comes from. Calling it vegetable glycerin is an attempt to trick you into thinking its something different. It may have different impurities, coming from a different source, but its still glycerin.
    • Glycerine is a component that is found in ALL animal and plant cells (including your own cells).

By specifying vegetable glycerin, the manufacturer is only trying to convey that the source of the glycerin is vegan friendly to those who have such concerns. But the chemical itself is the same.

I included a write up of several lube ingredients that people often seek to avoid in one of my reviews (look under the Personal Comments section). I also included links to reliable resources for checking any chemical about which anyone might have concerns. Here's the link to the review: link

Perhaps the descriptions of the various ingredients might be helpful.
