Universal lube review
Universal Lubricant is a silicone lubricant supposedly compatible with toys, but I'm not convinced. This lube was not the worst thing I’ve ever tried but I don’t think I would go out and purchase this for myself.Published: July 6, 2008
Pros:
Silicone based
Cons:
Oily
This lube is brand new and supposedly the best thing since sliced bread but I beg to differ. While this is the only lubricant (to my knowledge) that you can use with silicone sex toys, I refuse to put my precious sex toys at risk. The only toys I would be willing to try it on would be my cheap jelly toys but as they are not made with silicone so I can use a better quality silicone lubricant with them and not have to worry. I have too many high-end very expensive sex toys that I would hate to see turn into swiss silicone cheese to even risk it.
As far as the quality of this lubricant – it’s definitely lacking. I tried it and while it does stay lubey longer it leaves an oily reside which is not something I want anywhere near my vagina. It was a royal pain in the rear end to wash off and left my hands feeling gross, as most silicone lubricants do (because they are waterproof).
If silicone lube is your thing I say give it a shot – but if you have no problems with water-based lubricants I still think that’s the way to go when it comes to silicone sex toys. As for this universal lubricant for anything other than toys I’d say stick to some of the better brands in either silicone or water-based formula.
This lube was not the worst thing I’ve ever tried but I don’t think I would go out and purchase this for myself. If your looking for a good silicone lube for anything other than your silicone toys look elsewhere. If you want something silicone to put on your toys, this is probably worth a shot, but I would suggest trying it on your cheaper silicone toys first.

Follow-up commentary

I gave this lube away to a friend after I reviewed it. I was never a big fan of lube (never really needed it) and if I was going to use Lube, I would choose something better.

Does it really make a difference using an expensive or cheap lube?

Quote: Does it really make a difference using an expensive or cheap lube?As long as it's the right sort to be friendly with your toys, I've never found it to make a difference. Eden's materials guide & most reviews will tell you any special lube requirements of a toy, but water-based gets along with most everything. My first lube was K-Y liquid, but was a but allergic to it. Now I use Astroglide & have been happy with that. If you try it just make sure you check if you're getting the water-based variety or silicone, as it comes both ways.
(A question from me while we're at it: Since so many toys only like water-based lubes, why use silicone at all? Because it lasts better, basically, i.e. less reapplication & all?) -
When it comes to lube, you really gotta try as many as you can and figure out which works best for you.
Example: For me, Maximus works best. Anything "Natural" or "Pure" are too light and wear away too fast. I'm NOT a fan of oil based lubes for clean-up reasons.

Worth it?

When you compare this to cheaper lubes is this worth the money?

I haven't used this one myself, but ounce for ounce it's cheaper than my preferred silicone lubricant.

Haven't used it so can't say but silicone lube will be more expensive!

Thank you for viewing Universal lube – lubricant review page!

Interesting that this lube claims to be safe with silicone toys. I wouldn't test it on a high-end toy either.
I was looking for a good silicone lube for water play, but think I'll stear clear of this one. I have heard good things about System Jo silicone lube though, think I'll try that instead. Thanks for the review!
JO is great!
Glad I could help!
Yeah, sticking with a quality water-based lube with your silicone toys definitely seems the way to go.
I wonder how they came up with the claim "univeral". Does it have silicone ingredients that are so different from the ingredients used in toys that it will not cause problems? I might have tested it on the base of some of my silicone toys just to see if there was an observable reaction. Too bad you didn't even like the texture though. Sounds like everybody is saying System JO is the way to go for silicone lube, I'll have to pick some up when I run out of what I'm currently using. Thanks for the review!
I believe that JO also claims that their lube is safe with silicone (they did some testing with Tantus products awhile back)- something about the high quality silicone being resistant to silicone lube. I wouldn't bother, though, especially not with the irritating clean-up that goes along with silicone lube.
Maximus or Probe!
Indeed. I don't know about you all, but I love some of my silicone toys WAY to much to risk it.
Can you recommend a good silicone lube instead of this one?
WET just came out with a new one. It's a thinner version of the WET Platinum that is supposedly very good. Off the top of my head I can't think of the name. I believe it's in the comfort line, or natural line. I'm honestly not the one to ask about lube. Especially silicone lube.
Hmmm. I have actually used this lube with several silicone toys before I knew better. They're fine. I will make a formal test and then consider a follow up review! Interesting discussion.
Thanks for the review!
Thank you!
Well, I'm sorry, but you didn't cover most of the points I would have expexted someone reviewing a silicone lube to cover. Silicone lube's main usefulness is for use in the shower and the bathtub, as other lubes will disolve or are just not safe in the context. Second, theyre often great for toys with very smooth surfaces where water-based lube just won't stick and/or when you need to use condoms and water-based lube just won't do. Glass toys, metal and acrylic are infamously reluctant to accept lube. I would have expected you to give this lube more of a chance before writing a review, so no, sorry I couldn't find it very useful.
Finally, what about components? Any glycerin? Parabens? Possible health risks? How body safe is this lube?
Thanks for the review
Nice review!
