Smart Wand medium - wand massager discontinued by LELO - review by Kitka

The Smart Wand by Lelo is designed to massage and help relax sore muscles or stimulate various external erogenous zones on one's body. It is not really intended for insertion so there are no claims about stimulating the g-spot. This toy is also not intended for anal insertion even though the head has a smaller diameter neck and then it flares out again, almost like a butt plug. Honestly the neck isn't long enough to really keep this inserted properly that way so don't bother with it unless you're confident that it won't just get sucked in too far.

Couples play is definitely possible with this toy since you'll most likely need someone to help you with reaching your back if you're using it to massage sore muscles but using it as foreplay or extra stimulation during sex is a possibility too. Solo play is also a great option if you're using this toy to stimulate your clitoris or other erogenous zones for some fun and/or relaxing alone time.

Beginners and advanced users alike will get a lot of use out of this toy since it is easy to follow the instructions included and the buttons are simple to operate. Being waterproof and made from mostly silicone makes this toy even easier to care for and play with and the fact that it is rechargeable will have many rejoicing over the lack of batteries.

The majority of the Smart Wand is covered in FDA-approved body-safe silicone with the exception of the inside of the handle which is a piece of shiny silver plastic. The silicone is smooth, matte and silky to the touch and has a safety rating of 10 out of 10 on the Eden materials safety scale. This means the silicone has anti-bacterial properties, is food-grade material, hypo-allergenic, latex free, non-porous and phthalates free. Silicone is typically kind of plushy but the silicone used here has no give whatsoever to help with delivering the vibrations where they're needed.

The plastic is smooth and rigid and embossed with "LELO" on the one end, which is the only "texture" this toy has but it really isn't intended to be felt at all during use beyond when you hold it with your hand. There was no odor upon opening the packaging of the Smart Wand and this toy came in the black color.

Using lubricant with this toy is almost a necessity because the silicone is smooth but it will grab on skin. Do NOT use silicone lubricant with the Smart Wand because you run the risk of degrading the material so only use water based lubricant to gain a slippery gliding effect.

The Smart Wand is about 8 1/2" in total length and measures about 2" in diameter across the head. Just after the massager head it drops off severely to about 1" in diameter and then picks right back up at its previous 2" diameter. That tapers down, as you follow down the handle, for about 3 1/2" until you reach the part where the handle starts to curve. This is where it measures about 7/8" in diameter before it flares out again at the bottom of the handle at around 1 1/8" diameter.

There are three buttons built into the silicone material that control the functions of the toy and light up during use/while charging, the handle is composed of a silvery piece of plastic that contains the LELO logo and the tip of the handle has a jack port where the charging cord plugs in to charge the Smart Wand. There is also a "CE" above the jack port and a little picture depicting a trashcan crossed out below the jack port, meaning do NOT dispose of this toy in the garbage.

This toy isn't heavy at all but most of its overall weight is concentrated towards the massager head end of it. The only noticeable seams in the toy are all around the plastic on the handle and they could possibly collect fluids during use so using a condom or other covering would be necessary before use with others who aren't fluid-bonded with you.

The Smart Wand has three buttons: "+", "-" and "()". These are built into the silicone material below the massager head and above the silver plastic accent on the handle. The "+" button turns the toy on with one press and raises the intensity of vibrations with each subsequent press and the "-" button lowers the intensity of vibrations and turns the toy off when held down for a few seconds. Each press on either of the buttons will make the indicator lights blink, they don't stay on during use. The "()" button will cycle through all the patterns at whatever level of intensity you are currently using. To change the intensity while using a pattern just press the "+" or "-" buttons to increase or decrease it. To lock/unlock your Smart Wand for travel hold the "+" and "-" buttons at the same time for a few seconds.

The "()" button also activates the Sense Touch feature when you hold down the button for a few seconds the indicator lights will flash to let you know it's been engaged. The Sense Touch technology that the Smart Wand has is interesting; when engaged if the toy is pressed against your body it will vibrate at full power and once you take the toy away from your body it will start to lower the intensity to a bare minimum. The User's Manual says that the Sense Touch technology is supposed to "closely mimic professional massage techniques. Rather than applying maximum stimulation to muscles from the start, massage strength builds when the wand comes in contact with the skin."

4. Very fast short pulsing
5. Quick Escalating
6. Long drawn out Rollercoaster
7. Shorter Rollercoaster
8. Random mix of Escalation/Pulsation

To charge your Smart Wand just plug the AV charger into an outlet and then plug the jack end into the jack port on the handle. While charging the indicator lights will pulse and it will take about 1 1/2 hours to initially charge it fully. Also charging your Smart Wand will automatically unlock the controls but do NOT be tempted to use the toy while plugged in or charging.

The Smart Wand is loud enough to possibly be heard through blankets but not through a closed door so it's discreet enough for dorm use. The vibrations are deep and rumbly but not close to the intensity of power the Hitachi possesses. If you're the kind of person who needs Hitachi power this toy probably won't do it for you.

Being waterproof makes the Smart Wand very easy to clean; just wash it in warm water with antibacterial soap or a toy cleaner and rinse thoroughly. Pat it dry with a lint-free cloth before storing away. Do NOT boil or throw this in your dishwasher as that will result in damaging the motor.

The packaging is great for storage if you can spare the space but the Smart Wand does come with a nice black drawstring storage pouch to keep it in so there's no need to keep the big bulky box. Just be sure to keep this toy away from other toys to ensure there won't be any melting together, etc. and store it in a dust-free, cool area; extreme heat may damage your Smart Wand.

The outer box is a lightweight paperboard white box with some pictures of a lady using the Smart Wand on her neck and legs on the back and just sitting on the front. Each side also has a picture of the Smart Wand itself but the back has the most information about the massager. The edges of the box also have a lot of information about the massager in six different languages and the end of the box informs you that it is recyclable.



Open the outer box and you can slide out the inner heavier box. This box is plain white all over except for the silver LELO logo in the middle of the lid. Lift off the lid and you'll see the Smart Wand nestled in its own cutout foam with a small LELO Insignia brooch next to it. At the end of this box there is a little flap, with LELO printed on it, that when lifted reveals a small storage compartment where the charger, User's Manual, 1-year warranty, a DO/DO NOT list and a packet of sample personal lubricant are contained.



The inner box would be great for storage if you can spare the space wherever you keep your toys. If not just tuck the Smart Wand into its very own storage pouch and store away with the rest of your toys, simple as that. The packaging is quite tasteful and discreet and could be given as a gift, but wrapping it or not would be up to your discretion.

The Smart Wand may not be quite as powerful as the Hitachi but it has its advantages. For me, the Hitachi is way too powerful to use on my back for a typical massage, it just ends up hurting way too much because I don't have a lot of muscle or fat in that area of my body. This is where the Smart Wand picks up the slack, it's great for massaging my back and doesn't hurt me. Being waterproof and non-porous are definitely big pluses for me, it's easier to clean and care for and bacteria won't find a place to hide on the Smart Wand. Unfortunately this isn't entirely true for the Hitachi since the head is very porous.

Overall I'm very happy with this massager and I'm glad I was able to receive this for my 100th review milestone.
