Butterfly Crap

The Butterfly Kiss is powerful but very buzzy. The design is well-thought-out but simply doesn’t work. The jelly material is very porous and unsafe for use, and I definitely don’t recommend this for anyone.

Strong vibrations, neat design
Cons:
Battery guzzler, porous material, not waterproof

Use

The Butterfly Kiss from California Exotics is a dual-stimulation vibe. The clitoral part has 2 vibrating antennae at the top and narrow wings on each side. The shaft has a ball on the end that is meant to hit your G-spot. I find this doesn’t work well as a rabbit vibrator because the shaft doesn’t carry the vibrations well and the wings and antennae don’t flutter very well once they are pressed up against you. It is also not a great G-spot toy because the vibrations diminish significantly towards the tip of the shaft. I think it would be more fitting to have this in the discreet category. I wouldn’t use this anally because the material is very porous and most condoms will slip off due to the funny shape of this toy.

Material / Texture

This is made of jelly, which is known to hold on to bacteria for a long time, no matter how carefully you try to clean it. The material is very smooth along the shaft. On the clitoral stimulator, there are small raised lines that run from wing to wing, and lube and other fluids can easily get trapped here. Even though the shaft is rather small, lube will be good to have because there is a lot of drag. Silicone or water-based lubes will work fine with this toy.

Around the base of the toy near the battery compartment are some raised heart-shaped bumps that allow for a better grip. The surface of this toy is also very sticky, so make sure to store it where pet hair and other loose particles won’t stick to it. I was disappointed to find that there is no inner piece to help carry the vibrations to the tip of the shaft, but this, in turn, makes it very flexible and quite flimsy. The shaft is also very bendable, and I can stretch it up to 10 inches. It is fun to wiggle around but is not so great in use.

Design / Shape / Size

It is rather small in size. The insertable end is about 3 1/2" long, and the bulb on the head is about 3/4" in diameter, which makes this easy to insert. If you have a shallow G-spot, you may feel it, but just don’t expect much stimulation. The clitoral piece is only an inch high, so it may not fit your anatomy to reach the clitoris. The entire toy is 7 inches long, so you can easily store it wherever you like.

Functions / Performance / Controls

The Butterfly Kiss is operated by 2 AAA batteries. The battery compartment has a twist-off cap, and the batteries go in with one pointy side first and the other pointy side down. A push button at the base allows you to go through the different vibration intensities. The first push is low, then medium, then high, and then back to off. There is a slight pause between each of the vibration modes. The button requires some effort to press, but it won’t easily be pushed accidentally while in use.
    • Easy to use
    • Not enough variety

Care and Maintenance

The Butterfly Kiss can simply be cleaned with soap and warm water. However, because it is made of jelly, it cannot be sanitized. This toy should be kept away from other toys and out of direct sunlight because it can react with other materials and melt. Find another place to keep your batteries when this toy is not in use so they don’t drain out or begin to corrode.
    • Easy to store
    • High maintenance

Experience

This will probably be the last jelly toy I’ll ever buy. The butterfly design was a neat idea but didn’t work well for me at all. The ball tip of the shaft feels strange to insert. I got this thinking it would be a nice dual-stimulation vibe, but that simply wasn’t the case. I give it 2 stars for the unique design.

I also don’t like how quickly it eats through batteries. I can only get 2 to 3 uses out of it before having to switch to new ones. The particular one I got didn’t survive a sink test. Other people have managed to use this in the tub, but the one I got doesn’t have an air-tight seam around the battery compartment, and a little bit of water seeped in. I don’t recommend this to anyone; instead, go for the Platinum Butterfly Kiss.
Follow-up commentary
I still don't like it. In fact, I threw it out because I just don't use it. Not only did I feel uncomfortable using it, but I didn't want it with my other toys, so to the trash it went.

Good review. Funny that you mentioned jelly melting- that happened to me with a toy very similar to this.

I had one of these years ago, and I totally agree with you. Not a very good toy at all.

  • Blue more expensive?
    • Anyone know why the blue is more expensive than the pink? They're the same, right? So why is one more expensive?
    • I've never noticed.

  • i have experiment attraction to women,,, i´m bicurious?
    • hi my name is yesenia paris,, and i´m 22 but since i was in high school i kind of have curiosity for girls,, i never like really kiss a girl or anything or i never had any female friend to experiment that, like i am very shy person and also like a lonely girl,, althought i am a very pleasant person and i good human being ,, noone seens to like me,,, but although of that matter i still feel the curiosity may because i have never been with a girl before
does that make a bisexual,a bicurious,of it just because the loneliness or the lock of friends,, like i never have a real
girl friend ,, like it´s samething that happens with boys,, you are not friends with them ,, but you like them in a different way,,, i always thing it´s because my loneliness
and the need of an another ,, girl being friends with me i also don´t have a mom to call and talk about my problems maybe it´s because of that the confusion thanks have a nice day
    • Someone made a similar post a while back, and I'll basically tell you what we told her. Don't follow stereotypes. Don't label yourself. If you are interested in girls, then you just are. If you haven't experimented with girls, personally I feel that when I liked someone it isn't based on any particular factor, it is based on the person themselves. I tell people I am bisexual, but really I think of myself as pansexual, not limiting emotion and attraction to anything. Not gender, not age, not race, not social status.

I think that sometimes people can become lonely and will "settle", making them open their views and ideas of dating up, to allow "just anyone" to enter into their lives. My boyfriend was this way, before meeting me, dating anyone who would say yes because he had no friends, and had been hurt and heartbroken so badly he just wanted to feel loved and accepted. I also have a straight friend who dated women just so she could have someone to date, but she wasn't attracted to them, although she liked to experiment and have fun, she says she is straight, but I don't give her a label.

If you ever need a friend to talk to, I am a good listener :)
    • Excellent advice Peggi and I second that. We don't need labels...we're just people. I'm a good listener too.

  • What's up with different Butterfly Kisses?
    • When I bought my Butterfly Kiss I thought there were only 2 versions - the standard and the Platinum Edition. Since I couldn't find the PE in my country I went with the regular one. I was so bent on getting it after watching Kara Sutra's review of it. She said it was TPR. I got my Butterfly Kiss. On the packaging (plastic shell with a piece of paper) it said that it's "phthalate-free" and made of TPR. I'm inclined to believe it as it didn't smell, didn't turn ugly yellow even when I had it for more than a year, didn't sting my bits (jelly does).

Now, however I see those jelly Butterfly Kisses. What's the deal? Was my vibe mis-labeled or are there more than 2 versions? I still have the paper insert from the packaging if you'd like to see it. The vibe itself looks a bit more opaque than what I see in EF catalog - it's always looked like this.

I would also ask people from EF who deal with the Review Program. Is my Butterfly Kiss same as yours (and thus qualifies for a review) or is it a different product?
    • Hi there!! California Exotic Novelties was the 1st to come out with this fantastic design. & yes we only have 2 versions, the platinum & the original. Check it out on our website link

Many other companies have tried to duplicate our product but have had no success. We are the original creators with the best product :) Hope this helps!

It's the jelly - throw it away or always use a condom. Look for better materials like silicone or VixSkin.
    • I wouldn't even use a condom...just get rid of it and stay away from the material.

  • Jelly Deformation?
    • Well I loved this little bugger and it came at a bargain so I suppose I can't complain too much. But I whipped it out for play tonight only to find that the jelly seems to have dented and deformed itself on the lovely bulbous head. I had it in a pocket next to my turbo glider and I suspect with some heat and pressure, that's the culprit that did this. It has very odd dents/suctionish things on it now.

Is this prone to happen to jelly toys? Could it have been the California summer heat? I would like to prevent this from happening in the future.

But in case people are wondering, this a toy I would glady invest in again.
    • It is my experience that jelly toys just deteriorate really fast...the heat may have sped up this process though. I do know heat can cause more phthalates to leak out of jelly. It probably just kind of melted on you a little. I would have to say you should go ahead and get a new one or better yet, find a comparible toy in silicone! Silicone can be boiled so, heat shouldn't be an issue with it at all! It always sucks when one of your favorites melts.
    • Does your house get pretty warm? I've never had that problem and I live in AZ. Was it touching the turbo glider? Sounds like a toy material interaction to me.
