Cute, but LOUD

While this is a 5 star toy in design, the motor just didn't do it for me. It's easy to hold, cute, a great shape for back massaging... but also is loud and buzzy. It also doesn't have a whole lot of power, which one may need to work out sore muscles. In total, there are probably better options out there for the price.

Use

The Body Star by Rocks Off is listed as a 'body massager,' but it can certainly double as a massager of less innocent intent. It fits easily in the hand and had one, central vibrating motor.

The main use for this device does seem to be body massage. The star shape makes it easy to hold, and there are small nubs on each arm that allow for a bit of texture. The design makes it so that you can press on one arm for more pressure to work out knots, or you can press on the entire thing for a general massage.

Of course, we are on an adults only site, so you can use this toy sexually. The nubby arms are a nice size to use on the clitoris and nipples, and it's pretty good at stimulating other erogenous zones to get your partner going.

If you want an insertable toy, this is not it. While you can use it to lightly tease the entrance of the vagina, you can't really insert it at all, and it's certainly not good for thrusting or g-spot stimulation.

Even if you could find a way to insert this toy anally, please don't! Not only would it be horribly uncomfortable, but it also could get stuck up there, requiring an extra uncomfortable trip to the emergency room. Stick to toys with handles, flared bases, and non-pointy shapes.

If you're a couple looking to try a first toy, this actually may not be too bad. While I would get something a bit quieter, and maybe cheaper, this would be a good toy that you can introduce as a massage tool... And see if they want to use it for something else. It's good for foreplay, but may not be great to use during sex.

As far as a first toy in general... I'd probably get something else. It's a bit expensive, loud, and isn't very versatile. I usually recommend getting something fairly cheap, and a toy that can be used both internally and externally for your first toy.

This toy doesn't quite pass Ryu's Dorm Seal of Approval. While it's cute, and it doesn't look like a sex toy at all, it's pretty loud. Unless you want your roommates to think you have a VERY bad back that needs constant massaging, I would try and get something less loud.

Material / Texture

The Body Star is made of PU coated plastic. PU coated plastic is rated a 7 out of 10 on the Eden Safety Scale. According to this forum post, the PU coating can be semi-porous if it's thick, but it is not porous in such a thin layer like this toy has.

Plastic is nonporous and body safe, which means that bacteria can not grow inside of it, and that it can not seep gross chemicals into your body during use. It's also latex free, in case you have an allergy to latex.

Plastic can be disinfected, but not by boiling because it can melt and deform under high temperatures. You will want to disinfect this toy by wiping it down with a 10% bleach solution. This will kill any bacteria and make it safe to switch users.

Only the bottom of this toy has the PU cote, which causes it to feel a bit softer and also have a bit more drag to it than usual. It does make it feel a bit nicer for a massage than just plain plastic would feel. This toy only comes in pink and white, which I must admit, is a bit feminine in appearance.

Plastic is entirely rigid and has no give to it at all. As far as a massage tool goes, the rigidity is a necessity. You can't work out sore muscles with something squishy! The rigidity allows for the user to put as much pressure as they need, no matter where this toy is massaging.

As far as materials go, the Body Star isn't awesome, but it also isn't bad. Plastic seems to be a good choice, even if it is the obvious one, and the PU coat makes the bottom half feel soft against your skin.

Design / Shape / Size

The Body Star has a cute, unique design that is entirely whimsical, unless you count 'realistic' in terms of resembling an animal. The design is what will draw people to this toy, and sadly, it's probably the best thing about it.

This toy looks just like a sea star, though it's cute, not spiny, and won't regurgitate its stomach to eat its prey. It also is much easier to care for than a starfish, as it occasionally may want new batteries but will never try to eat other sex toys.

This toy is 4.5 inches across in all directions. It's about 1 inch tall in the center. If you really want to try to insert this toy, it's got less than an inch of insertable length on each arm. In total, this toy is pretty small, and for sure shouldn't cause any 'penis envy' insecurities.

In terms of design, the top part of the toy is domed. It has a pink button (surrounded by a silver accent) in the middle, which you use to control this toy. It also has small ridges for decoration that go down each arm, which also help a bit with gripping it.

The bottom of the toy is pink and almost entirely flat. There are several raised circles on the ends of the legs which help to give it a bit more texture. There are also two printed words, 'open' and 'closed,' which help to put it together and take it apart.

It fits very easily into the palm of my hand, and I think that it would be just as easy to use even if you have very large or small hands. This tool also helps you to give your partner a massage if you have weak hands or fingers.

If someone saw this out they wouldn't know what it was, and even if they turned it on it's easy to pass off as a 'back massager,' even if that's not what you use it for. This also makes it great for travel, though it may not be small enough to just toss into a purse.

The design of this toy makes it great for people who want something to use on their bodies, for sexual play, or both. It's not insertable, but that would make it worse for regular massages, anyways.

Functions / Performance / Controls

When it comes to the motor of this toy, the functions could be improved upon. It's certainly not going to get to be my go-to toy entirely for that reason, though it is very cute.

You control this toy by pressing the small, pink button on the top. It's pretty out of the way, and isn't somewhere your fingers put much pressure when you use it, so it shouldn't be easy to accidentally change the settings. You turn it on by pressing it once, and each time you press it again the setting changes. You turn the toy off by holding the button down. The settings are as follows:

1) Low (1 vroom, 2 bees)
2) Medium (2 vrooms, 3 bees)
3) High (3 vrooms, 4 bees)
4) BZ BZ BZ BZ BZ
5) bbbBBZZZZZ bbbBBZZZZ

This toy is surprisingly loud. Even though you can pass off the toy as a back massager, people may get skeptical if you have roommates if they can hear you 'working out kinks in your back' every night before bed. While it can be drowned out with other noise, this toy probably isn't for somewhere you have to hide.

Another surprise is, even though this toy looks like an aquatic creature, it's not waterproof. There is an o-ring around the battery compartment, but the box doesn't list it as waterproof and it doesn't seem very secure, so I probably wouldn't take this into the bath or pool.

This toy only has one motor, and it's located at the center of the toy. All of the arms have pretty even vibrations. If you put a lot of pressure on this toy the motor does sound like it's straining. It's also a bit buzzy.

In total, this toy has a fair amount of power, but it is too buzzy for my taste and is pretty darned loud. Even the lowest setting is a bit too loud for me, though other people may not be as bothered by it. I feel like there are better toys out there with better motors.

Care and Maintenance

The Body has no deep textures or real seams, so it's super easy to clean. Though there are small bumps, the fact that this toy isn't insertable means that it shouldn't get too 'gunky.' It doesn't attract lint, so you can get away with only cleaning it after every use if you keep it in a clean place. You can clean your toy with an antibacterial toy cleaner, a toy wipe, or soap and water.

You can disinfect this toy by wiping it down with a 10% bleach solution. This prevents the spread of bacteria and infection, which means that you can switch users without worry. This should be done every time you switch users.

This toy can be stored just about anywhere. Plastic is compatible with all other types of materials, so you don't have to worry about it reacting with your collection. It's also compatible with water- and silicone-based lubes, and you should be fine to use massage oils.

Packaging

The packaging for this toy is pretty basic. It is made of thin, transparent plastic and is much larger than the toy itself, which makes it not the best storage option. It's not very classy, but it's not tawdry (and even just states that it's a 'body massager') so it would be okay to wrap up and give as a gift.

The front is transparent, so you can see the Body Star. It also states the name of the toy, a few features of it, and that it's a 'Heavenly Body Massager for your back and beyond." It is pretty pink, and is quite feminine.

The back is also transparent. It has a few bullet points that try to 'sell' the toy, and an image showing how to unscrew it in order to install the batteries. While it's not super informative, the toy also comes with an instruction booklet in case you can't figure something out.

Experience

When I ordered the Body Star for a free assignment I was pretty stoked; it was super cute. I love sea creatures (I'd totally go into ichthyology if I didn't hate boats), so I was super stoked to get home and try it out. Unfortunately, this one just didn't live up to my expectations.

My main issue with this toy is that it is LOUD! While I don't normally mind a bit of noise, this is just annoying. It also doesn't have the power to go with the volume. While I don't need a lot of oomph, a bit more power would have made it more useful for body massages.

In total, this toy was a bust for me. It's cute, but for the listed price it really isn't worth it. For less money you can get something stronger, waterproof, and with less volume... Though it may not be as cute. Because of that I'm giving this toy 3 stars. It kept a few stars because, come on, it looks awesome. It also does fit easily into my hand and is a great shape for back massages.
