Key Nyx - discreet massager discontinued by Jopen - review by Mikemanz

The Key Nyx by Jopen is a small, attractive, bullet shaped external vibrator suitable for use by anyone who wants to shake up parts of their anatomy. The toy is definitely made for mainly external use, as a clit vibe or to tease some testicles. The smaller size (see dimensions below) probably would not allow for any serious penetration, but you could tease your lips some if you wanted to. In some positions this would be small enough to use for clitoral stimulation while enjoying penetration. This is not made for, and should probably not be used for, anal insertion. There is no flared base for safety and cleaning would be difficult if the vibe were not covered. This can be used to good effect on all external bits though - nipples, clits, whatever ya got.

The Nyx is an interesting toy in that it has two very different textures. This is made possible by the addition of a removable silicone sleeve. It is very smooth and soft. The sleeve is a nice quality silicone that has all of the advantages of silicone such as ease of cleaning, phthalate free, non-toxicity, little to no smell or taste, smooth and non porous surface, and the ability to be cleaned by boiling, bleaching, dishwasher (top rack), or soap and water. (Note that these cleaning methods apply ONLY to the silicone sleeve!) The sleeve is snug fitting and was a little difficult to remove. It has several grooves that run along both sides, but these are very subtle and add more to a stylish look than any textured feeling. There is a slightly visible seam, but I couldn't feel it when I ran a finger across it. The Eden Fantasys material safety ratings page gives silicone a 10. That's very good, as it is very stable and safe for all sensitive areas. The smoothness of the silicone feels very nice and my lovely wife (primary tester of all things clit related) liked the feeling of it. She said it had a little drag to it, but when properly lubed (water based only for silicone) this small amount of grab was a positive feature.





When the silicone sleeve is removed, the underlying surface is hard, durable, smooth ABS plastic. ABS plastic is widely used in industry. It is used in the manufacturing of everything from whitewater kayaks to Lego bricks because of its toughness and durability. It is also used in the manufacturing of some medical devices, so it is body safe. Interestingly, ABS plastic can be degraded by sunlight and this was the cause of one of the largest automobile recalls in history, due to seat belt latch failures. The people at Jopen call the ABS plastic a "Sleek and sophisticated glass-like effect body". It is very smooth and very hard - almost glass like - kinda, sorta. Our resident tester found it to be too hard for her liking. There is also a seam along this surface which can be felt by a finger running across it. It is still very small. The plastic is very stable and can be cleaned with most any toy cleaner or soapy water. Any lubes are safe for ABS plastic.

The cap end of the toy is silver plated ABS plastic and the push button is stainless steel adorned with the Key logo.

The design of the Nyx is simple and sleek. It does have an air of sophistication about it. It is shaped rather like a large bullet vibrator. The end gradually drops to a rounded tip that pinpoints vibrations very effectively. The overall length of the toy is 5" and the diameter of the shaft is 1". The silicone sleeve adds 1/16" to the length and a touch over 1/8" to the diameter. The size was good for a small vibe used mainly externally. The Nyx comes in lavender, raspberry and blue colors. We got the blue, and it is a nice, bright, vibrant blue.

Using this toy, I found it easy to hold and manipulate, with or without the sleeve on. Even with lube running about, the silicone sleeve allowed for a pretty good grip. The grooves helped with this. Beginners and "old hands" alike will find this easy to use and enjoy. We found that it did its job very well and was fun to use. See the "Experience" section for thrilling details!

It looks like a sex toy and is not very discreet. Stashed away in its included bag, it would look like a vibe in a bag. Bring it with you if you want, but the screeners at TSA will know what it is and smirk. Or be jealous. It is small enough to tuck in a purse or carry in a pocket if you wanted to. Or use on the bus.

The control of the Nyx is very simple. There is a single button on the end of the toy which when pressed turns the vibrator on. Subsequent one second presses will cycle through the five different vibration modes. Holding the button down for three seconds will turn the toy off. When restarting the vibe it always starts out at the beginning of the modes cycle.

The different vibrations are as follows:

The vibrations are concentrated near the last 2" or so of the toy, and they quickly diminish in strength as one moves up the shaft. The vibrations were not "rumbly", but not really "buzzy" either - they were like Goldilocks vibrations - just right. The strength was more than adequate from the single AA size battery required (not included). Maybe not on a par with a jackhammer or Hitachi wand, but, c'mon, it's only palm sized!

This is very easy and convenient to use, and I found it simple to "scroll" through the different modes to find the one my wife liked best. The button was easy to use and placed well, so there was no inadvertent changing of modes mid-course! It was easy to change vibration as her level of arousal changed. The toy is very quiet, and even at its loudest would barely be heard from under a blanket. I just went and tested this, so you know it's true! The toy does claim to be waterproof, but I haven't tried this out. The O-ring that seals the cap to the body is thin and flat, not the usual type ring. I did notice that when I cleaned the Nyx some water seeped down between the body and the ABS sleeve. I was able to shake most of it out and it seems to have dried with no ill effect.

One minor drawback that I noted was that the battery cap is a little difficult to take off. It is not a screw type cap, but one where you have to line up a channel to drop the cap onto, then turn it until it locks in. It is angled to pull the cap in tight as it turns, but it is difficult to get a good grip on the smooth cap.

Care and maintenance is very simple for the Nyx. Since you used water based lube, natural or otherwise, it is a simple matter to clean with hot, soapy water or toy cleaner. Anti-bacterial soaps are also a good choice. Being waterproof it can be completely submerged to rinse without fear of damage, so it can be sanitized in a dilute bleach solution. Don't be all silly and try to boil the whole thing. The silicone sleeve can be removed and cleaned separately if desired, like you would clean any silicone product (see above).

As stated previously, for simplicity stick with water-based lubes for use with the silicone sleeve. Any lube may be used if not using the sleeve.

Jopen provides a nice little lint free storage pouch for the Nyx. The pouch is adequate, but hardly luxurious. The packaging is so nice, though, that we keep ours in its original box.

The packaging was the first thing about the Nyx that made my wife (literally) squeal with pleasure! The box is shrink wrapped in plastic. When unwrapped, there is a cardboard sleeve with a photo of the Nyx that slides off the top to reveal a book-like interior package.




The toy itself is nestled in a foam block inside the "book". Along with the toy inside of a small plastic envelope are an instruction sheet, warranty information, and a small, lint free drawstring pouch. I know that no amount of good packaging can make up for a poor product, but great packaging definitely helps to add to the cachet of an item! Jopen goes all out. This would make a lovely gift box, and the shape lends itself to easy gift wrapping. We like the box so much, we don't even use the pouch, we just store it right back in the box.

Ok, so it's made of great materials and the box is really, really nice, but did it do the job? The answer is a resounding YES! The first time we used the toy my wife fell in love with it. We started out using it as a foreplay toy at the beginning of our lovemaking session. She loved the feel of it on her labia and around her clit. The toy was easy for me to maneuver over and around and peeping into her pussy. She loved the cascading vibrating mode (No. 3) in the beginning. It really wowed her! She is very sensitive to begin and this up and down vibe really worked well for her. As her excitement rose it became apparent that this toy was doing the trick and doing it quickly! As she got closer to coming I switched to the high constant vibration (No. 1). Here was squeal number two! She loved this, and it easily pushed her over the edge to a powerful climax. She really liked the feel of the silicone sleeve on her clit and lips and, even though she has a sometimes obstinate "clit of steel", the powerful vibrations of the first setting pushed her right to heaven!

This is really a well made, terrific toy and I would give it five stars if not for the funky battery cap and difficult to remove sleeve. Sitting here reading this it seems kind of nit picky, but we call 'em like we see 'em.
