They toy and the attachments are made of hard plastic which is rated an 8 on EF safety scale! In my opinion this toy didn't have a smell or taste to it at all. Each attachment has a different texture. The 1st attachment is a round smooth tip, the 2nd has a bunch of little bumps, the 3rd has little spikey bumps, the 4th has spikey like bumps (the spikey things don't hurt). EF texture says Noduled / Nubbed / Smooth / Studded. All of them feel great. Everyone; from beginners to advanced users can use this and love it. It also comes with a water based lube!
