Play with Something Else.
What appears to be a simple vibrator by a reliable company unfortunately fails at both vibrating and being reliable. But hey, it comes with a nice storage pouch!Published: February 2, 2012
Pros:
Includes storage pouch, safe material.
Cons:
Weak vibrations, breaks easily, hard to use controls.
Use
Durex's Play Allure is a simple, waterproof, hard plastic vibrator that is designed be used vaginally or externally. Sticking this thing up your butt is a really terrible idea, though it would probably make a great story years to come about how the doctors managed to dislodge the vibrator from your colon. (In other words, don't do it.)
Come to think of it, you might not want to stick this just about anywhere. The vibrations are so weak it was a challenge to bring me to orgasm, and when I first bought this toy I was 17 and new to vibrators, so that should tell you something. If you have a sensitive clit, the highest level of vibrations may be enough for you. If not, you might want to scratch external stimulation, too.
But hey, vibrations aren't everything, right? What if I just used it as a dildo? Well, I've tried that. More specifically, I was forced to try that because the thing broke after just a few uses. At first I thought it might have been because I was using it in the shower, but it's supposed to be waterproof and the battery compartment was screwed on properly. Combining the perspective gained by reading others' reviews with my own disappointment at the lacking vibrations, the more likely explanation is that this toy is piece of crap, but I'll leave it up to you.
Without vibrations, this toy made a poor dildo. Thrusting with it gave me no pleasure at all, and it's not like it's shaped for G-spotting. The bottom line is that it's meant to be a vibrator, and it fails.
Material / Texture
The material is hard plastic, ranking an 8 on the safety scale, with no texture what so ever. I like toys that don't have a lot of texture, but I find myself wondering sometimes if this toy may have felt better if it did. Despite the nice size, I couldn't get anything out of it. There was just no stimulation there at all. If you are someone who already knows you like hard plastic toys, though, then this might not be a problem for you.

Design / Shape / Size
The shape is very sleek and simple, and the size isn't too intimidating for most beginners at about 1.25" or a two-finger width at the widest point. The shaft is nicely tapered for easy insertion. While it's long enough to thrust with, the material makes it very difficult to grip when the juices do finally start flowing. It isn't really designed for G-spot stimulation, so if that's something you look for in a toy, you should probably pass on this one.
This is not a discreet vibrator. It cannot pass for anything other than a sex toy, and it can be fairly noisy when in use. If you're going to travel with it, always take the battery out first.

Functions / Performance / Controls
The Play Allure takes one AA battery, and the vibrations are controlled via twisting the purple band around the base of the toy. Theoretically, this type of control should allow for seamless transition between speeds, but unfortunately it just makes it difficult to use if there is any lube involved, and mine often got stuck. There is some texture around this band, featuring the durex logo, which helps to grip it.
Simply put, the vibrations are very weak. I could still get off to them if I was using the tip of the toy to rub my clit with, as the smooth plastic excels at gliding across the slick labia. But if I wanted to please myself without really working for it (like most vibrators are designed for), I was out of luck.
After a while, the toy started glitching out on me. The vibrations would randomly drop or jump around. New batteries did not fix the problem, and I knew it's short life was drawing to an end.
This toy is waterproof, and performed fine in the shower the first few times I used it before it broke. I can't say whether it broke on its own merit or because of the water. Fortunately being in the shower washes any excess lube your fingers and the base of the toy, so it's easier to grip.
This toy wasn't quiet, but it wasn't incredibly noisy either. It could be heard through the covers, but not through a closed door. Considering the weak vibrations it offers, though, it should have been much quieter than it was.

Care and Maintenance
Plastic toys can be used with water, oil, and silicone lubricants, and is easy to clean with hot water and antibacterial soap. I slipped this toy into the nifty storage pouch included in the box and stored it in a drawer.

Packaging
The box has a nice little flap you can open and see the toy through, and inside you'll find a pamphlet and a purple draw string storage pouch along with your toy. I really appreciated the storage pouch being included in the packaging, and even after the toy broke, it's convenient to keep around.

Experience
I first saw this vibrator at Walgreen's. I was pretty ecstatic about there being a vibrator so readily accessible to me, because at the time, I wasn't old enough to enter sex shops. The only vibrations I had ever felt were from a 'personal massager' (also from Walgreen's) that wasn't shaped for insertion, so I was ecstatic about feeling internal vibrations for the first time. But if even my inexperienced 17 year old self couldn't get off to this thing, anyone who's ever used a decent vibrator will likely end up returning it.
