Before the first use it is always wise to clean the device. The egg vibe is easy to clean for a number of reasons:

1. It has a silky touch to it. I believe that the vibrator is covered with a layer of silicone. Which gives it a silk like touch. The silicone is similar to silicone cooking tools - whatever they come in touch with does not stick very much to them. And therefore the same is true for this device.

2. You can [and definitely should] unplug the cord that attaches it to the controls/battery pack. This is easy to accomplish, since the cord connector is like a headphone connector jack. There is also no gap where the cord goes into the device, making sure its electronics won't come in touch with liquids that could otherwise damage it.

3. It takes only a couple of seconds to clean it with soap and water (ideally continuous cleaning it with your soupy hands for at least 30 seconds should remove any bacteria).

The reason for having these different pulse types is to experience different rhythms of sensations, similar to real life during intercourse, where the penis stimulates the vagina in various rhythms. To change the pulse speed or intensity setting, the controller has a little "wheel" that is attached vertically and goes half way into the controller - just like a mouse wheel. I like that feature a lot, from an ergonomic point of view but also that it provides the possibility to fine-tune each rhythm. The downside though is that this speed or intensity setting is not stored for each rhythm, which would have been a nice feature. There are 6 small red lights underneath the button - the number of red lights turned on represents the number of the pulse type currently active. After the 6th pulse type, the device - and all its lights - turns off.
