Remember the Northwestern University live sex demonstration controversy? If not, well, that’s why we’re here for you, since the mental image of exhibitionists showing off their prowess with a “fuck saw” for the benefit of undergraduates in Human Sexuality class was burned onto our retinas just last week.
Well, the professor in charge, John Michael Bailey, apologized over the weekend and we think that disappoints us a little bit, just because, well, we think having live sex demonstrations as part of a course in human sexuality is just a darned innovative approach. But Bailey, upon closer inspection, really only apologized for the fallout after the event. So this really sounds more like an “I’m sorry if you were offended” kind of sorry, rather than the groveling, “That was so wrong of me” kind. When the apology is qualified by ... Human Sex professor stands by educational value of event, announces plan to host discussion about it ... that doesn’t sound quite as remorseful as maybe the professor’s detractors were hoping for.
What kind of teacher is Bailey? According to former student Joseph Bernstein, Bailey’s Human Sexuality class was the best course he ever took.
We’re betting no one who had him as a teacher this year will be forgetting what they learned anytime soon, either.
