I'm not sure how I omitted it, but the English poet mentioned but not named was Richard Barnfield... and if you can find the poem, it's worth it; it's beautiful

Nice article, thanks.
By the way, it's generally understood that Onan's offense was not "wasting his seed" as such, but not obeying God's command that he impregnate the widow of his dead brother. So, although there is some historical tradition of regarding the story of Onan as suggesting that God disapproves of masturbation, there's no real basis for that interpretation.

Thanks for pointing that out, Dooboige - and interestingly, an e-mail from another reader suggested that both the Old and New Testaments can be interpreted as approving of oral sex: in Numbers 5: 24, we find "And he shall cause the woman to drink the bitter water," which ... I don't know, I think it's a little vague, to say the least.

But John 4:10-16 could be a lot more forthright... at least depending upon your interpretation of the term "living water"...

Jesus, speaking to the woman of Samaria, says,

10 "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water."

11 The woman said to him, "Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?...

16 Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come back."

I once had a partner ask me if I swallowed, to which I replied..... what else would I do? Couldn't imagine it any other way.

I read years ago that swallowing may make a woman's body more likely to accept a man's sperm (and less likely to reject it, ie pre-eclampsia). [pause] OK, I looked up the article where I read that: [http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/1803978.stm] So there may be a sound biological reason for some women to swallow. Personally, I love to swallow because I like the taste, because I know how much it pleases the guy and because it just feels so good psychologically. It's a form of total acceptance of one's partner, isn't it?
