The base/controller of the toy is made of glossy ABS plastic, which extends up the entire length of the shaft under a padding of non-porous silicone. Understandably, there is no flexibility at all along the length. The head, however, is made entirely of silicone, so with moderate pressure it flexes quite a bit in any direction. What it feels like on the surface is the typical matte finish silicone with a moderate amount of drag and a real penchant for attracting lint. But it's far from typical. The toy boasts a dual layer construction with "silicone gel" to allow it be squished and even dented, like firm clay, after which it will reform to its original shape when the pressure is removed. This provides a fair amount of comfortable cushion to what is a rigid toy overall.
The Impressions G does have a slight sweet scent to it when first opened, which does fade away after a few cleanings.
With only a 1" wide shaft and a 1.25" wide x 1.5" long head, this isn't a vibrator for those who like to get that "full" feeling on insertion. Its strength lies in the 8" of length (5" of that being insertable) that allows you to maneuver it to reach nearly any spot without having to sport an awkward position, and in the curved head that delivers pinpoint vibrations right where you want them. The slender design lets you easily tuck this toy away in a travel bag or storage drawer too, without using up too much space.
The base is easy to find and maintain a good grip on, and the control button is conveniently placed so it's facing upward in line with the tip of the head and can be operated with a thumb. It's easy to push, yet not so easy that accidental clicks are an issue.
The entire plastic base of the vibrator unscrews to reveal the battery compartment, and it requires 2 AAA batteries (not included). There is a paper guide inside the compartment to show you which way they go.
The control button gives off an audible "click" each time it's pressed, and each click cycles you to the next in a line of 5 vibration settings. If the innovative material of this toy isn't enough to bust the norms in the vibrator world, Icon Brands' choice of vibration patterns takes things a step further. There is only one speed of steady vibrations, which is the fourth setting, not the first. The first setting is a pattern of 5 slow pulses, followed by 4 seconds of medium speed pulsing, then 4 seconds of fast pulsing. The second setting 5 slow pulses, a full 1-second pause, 4 seconds of low steady vibrations, 4 seconds of fast pulsing, a full 1-second pause, and then 4 seconds of low steady vibrations again. The third setting is rapid pulsing. The fourth, as we've already said, is a steady vibration of moderate strength. The fifth and final setting delivers 5 seconds of steady vibrations followed by 4 seconds of rapid pulsing, and the next click of the button takes you back to setting one. At any time you can press and hold the button for a couple of seconds to shut the toy off, and when you turn it back on it always starts at level one.
Clearly this is a toy for those who prefer a lot of variety in their vibes, as opposed to the standard high/medium/low menu, and it's also geared to those who like them on the gentle-to-moderate side. The vibrations are just slightly stronger in the shaft than in the head, and can be felt enough in the handle to use its bottom edge as a teaser. The vibes felt in the handle aren't strong enough to numb your fingers, but are useful for those times when you want to take a pause from clit or G play to do a little nipple teasing without getting lube on your chest.
The Impressions G is also a quiet toy, with only a gentle hum being heard through the covers.
This toy is compatible with any water-based lubricant. Since it's waterproof, it can easily be cleaned with soap and water, or your favorite toy cleaner. We suggest storing it where lint and dust won't be an issue, and/or either putting it in its original plastic package or dropping it in a large Ziploc bag before tucking it away.
The Impression G is packaged in a thin clear plastic box with a plastic pull-out tray inside that cradles the toy. It's likely that the vibrator will outlast the packaging for storage, but it should do for a while. There are no instructions.
More than anything, I'm liking the way the controller is shaped on this one. There's just no bad angle to use it from and that big button is kind to clumsy hands. Add that to the fact that it fits fine between two bodies and well... it's a decent toy. We did try this for prostate play, and while it was comfortable and all it didn't do much. I don't know if the tip of the toy straightened out once it was in there or what but there was no easily definable added pressure in any one area. It may have worked out anyway if the vibrations had a bit more oomph, but it was like longing for a Hemi and getting a 6-cylinder instead.
I think it's an excellent design for a clit toy but I wish it were stronger. The vibrations are just enough to feel good but not enough to get anywhere near finishing the job. It's closer in strength to what I prefer in a G-spot toy, but we can't seem to *find* my G-spot with that little tip.
Still, Alan & I have decided to go ahead and give it 4 stars in spite of the fact that it didn't work out as planned for either of us. This is because there isn't really anything wrong with the toy as far as quality and all that. It's just better suited for people who like gentler toys, and the niche of patterned vibration lovers out there.
