Seriously Short Skirt

The Vinyl Pleated Mini Skirt by Leg Avenue is a fun piece that can be worn in and/or out of the bedroom. It's really short though so you'll need to wear opaque leggings beneath it while out in public. Both material and metal hardware seem to be quite durable. Sadly, the skirt didn't have enough width to fit my hips. There is very little room for width adjustment so if you're on the higher end of the suggested measurements, order a size up.

extremely useful review
The Vinyl Pleated Mini Skirt by Leg Avenue was offered in sizes S-L, but seems to have been recently discontinued. I had the skirt on my wish list for quite some time but only recently purchased it because I had noticed it was on sale. I wasn’t sure if I should get it for myself because I usually wear a size XL and the largest size available was a large. I ended up purchasing the size large for myself and figured that if it was too tight on me, I could give it to a friend who is a bit smaller in the hip area.

The skirt arrived in a plastic package. There was no text or images on the bag. There was a cardboard tag attached to the skirt that had an image of a model wearing the piece and stated the company name, product name, size, care instructions, material composition, and company contact information. The clear plastic bag that the skirt arrived in is not ideal for storing the piece when it’s not being worn. It can be hung up in the closet or folded inside of a drawer.

The skirt is 70% polyethylene and 30% polyester. The material is thin, opaque (not sheer), and has a little bit of stretch to it. There isn’t enough stretch at the top of the skirt to be able to stretch it to adjust the width. The skirt is all black in colour with silver coloured metal accents. The black material reminds me of a raincoat. It has plastic-y feel and a wet-look shine to it. I’ve taken a few measurements of the skirt lying flat. If you need any additional measurements, please send me a message and I’d be happy to get them for you.

Length of skirt: 8 ¼ inches
Waistband: 17-18 inches

There are two buckles to the skirt. There is one that sits at the top front and one that sits at the top back. Where the buckles sit on you will depend on how you wear the skirt. There is a slit in the skirt, right beneath the front buckle. You’ll probably want to twist the skirt a bit to have this buckle sitting off to the side of your body. That way the slit isn’t directly in the centre of your body (exposing your crotch). The buckle at the back of the skirt doesn’t have a slit beneath it.

Each buckle area has three eyelets. The buckle itself is rectangular in shape. You’re able to move the buckles around and put the buckle’s stem into any of the eyelets. While you can adjust the buckles locations on the belt, it doesn’t adjust the width of the skirt. The buckles are for show only. The only closure to the skirt sits right beneath the front buckle. The closure is a Velcro piece. This piece is 2 inches wide so there is a little bit of room for width adjustment, but not very much.

There is a large O-ring beside each of the buckles. The diameter of each ring is 1 ¼ inches. I’m not entirely sure what the purposes of the O-rings are. I assume that they are just for decoration but you could always attach something to them if you wanted to. These rings are pretty heavy and durable. The rest of the metal accents to the skirt are of decent quality but these rings were meant to last.

The last metal decoration to the skirt is the zipper. This zipper sits 3 inches down from the very top of the skirt and runs horizontally all the way around the piece. This zipper is fully functional. You can unzip the bottom of the skirt right off! I’m not sure why you’d need to do that since the skirt is so short to begin with but you have that option.

Leg Avenue’s size chart states that the size large is best suited for those with a hip measurement between 38-40 inches. This worried me because my hip measurement is actually 41 ½ inches. My height is 5’6”, and I’ve got thick thighs and a big bum. Since this skirt is so incredibly short, you’ll want to wear a pair of opaque leggings beneath the skirt if you plan on wearing it in public.

Putting the skirt on is simple. You can leave the buckle and Velcro done up and just slide the skirt up your body. Or, you could undo the buckle and Velcro, wrap the skirt around your hips, and then do the closure up. I’m so disappointed. The skirt doesn’t fit my hips. I’m too wide! I can wear the skirt if I safety pin the closure shut but that just looks bad. When the skirt sits at my hips (with a safety pin), the bottom of my bum cheeks are exposed. Like I said, it’s very short!

I shimmied the skirt up my body a little bit to where the width wasn’t as wide. I found a place where the skirt JUST fit and then I measured the area. The area where the skirt just fit was 39 inches. That being said, even though Leg Avenue’s size chart says that the skirt would work for someone with 40-inch hips, it probably won’t. I’d recommend the size large to someone with a 37-39 inch hip measurement—nothing more, nothing less.

I wore the skirt with a safety pin closure for a little while and didn’t experience any comfort issues while wearing it. The material is really thin and the inner area of the skirt is soft against the skin. The only thing that some people might not like is the clinking sound of the metal O-rings. As you move about, the rings clink against the other metal pieces. The care instructions on the cardboard tag state that the skirt should be hand washed in warm water and drip-dried. Only non-chlorinated bleach should be used when needed and the skirt should not be ironed.

Overall, I’m disappointed that the skirt didn’t fit my hips but it’s a really nice piece. The quality is good, it can be worn in and/or out of the bedroom, and the price is decent. I’ve deducted one star from the rating because there is very little room for width adjustment. It also stinks that it isn’t offered in a wider variety of sizes. If it were available in a larger size, I’d definitely have to get it.
