For all the trouble some politicians have given to same-sex couples who want to get married, they sure are in a hurry to help them get divorced.

The Associated Press reported Tuesday that the D.C. Council is considering legislation that would make it easier for same-sex couples who were married in Washington D.C. to get divorced. Current law says that at least one member of the couple has to live in D.C. for six months before beginning divorce proceedings. The proposed law would allow them to divorce whether they lived in the District or not, assuming they live in a place that recognizes their divorce.

Which, we think, would mean a place that also recognizes their marriage?

At any rate, the Committee on the Judiciary sent the bill to the full council on Tuesday.

Kind of funny that the perceived need for expedient dissolution is coming before most states even have same-sex marriage legalized. On the other hand, think of the mileage we’ll all eventually get out of the phrase “gay divorcee.”
