Both the massager and the remote are made of high quality silicone (with a safety rating of 10) and ABS plastic (with a safety rating of 8). The silicone is silky smooth, and almost feels like satin against the skin.
The massager part is completely smooth, with a very small nubby area that marks a button underneath the silicone skin. It is not felt during use, even when inserted.
One side of the disc remote is silicone and the other is plastic. The silicone side is completely smooth, save for the three control buttons. The plastic side is smooth, except for the Lelo brand and Insignia sign embossed into it. It also has a small slot where the plastic key can be inserted to take the battery cap off.
This massager is similar in shape and size to a lucky rabbit’s foot. It is 3.25” total length, with a 3.75” cord attached. The silicone body is 2.5” long, with 0.75” long plastic cap. The small plastic cap unscrews to expose the charging port.
The massager has a hump on one side, making it just a bit fatter in the middle. It is about 4” in circumference, or about 1.3” in diameter, around the thickest part.
*Charging the massager
When charging, the light on the massager will pulse. The light will glow steady when full charge is reached. To fully charge the massager, after it has been completely drained, takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. It runs about 3 ½ hours continuously on a full charge without losing power or overheating. When the charge in the massager is running low, the light will flash rapidly during use. The manual says that the SenseMotion technology works best when the massager is fully charged, and the remote has fresh batteries in it. To improve battery life, the unit should be charged monthly.
The remote is a flat, round disc, measuring 2.5” across and about 0.75” thick. It is about the size of an average makeup compact. A small plastic key comes with the set, and this key can be used to remove the plastic panel from the back of the remote. Insert the plastic key into the slot and turn it counter clockwise, about a ¼ turn. This exposes the battery compartment. The remote runs on 2 AAA batteries, with two included. To replace the plastic panel, use the key, or your flattened palms, to turn the plastic panel clockwise, about a ¼ turn. Don’t use coins, screwdrivers, or any other items to open or close the remote’s back panel, because it may damage the ABS plastic finish.
Both pieces of this set are completely waterproof.
The controls on both the massager and the remote are easy to find and easy to push.
Massager’s control button
The massager has only 1 button on it, and it can be used without the remote. When used alone, the massager will automatically be on the most powerful setting. With one push of the button, the massager will provide steady vibrations. Pushing the button repeatedly will cycle it through all the patterns. To turn the massager off, push and hold the button for about three seconds.
Remote’s control buttons
The remote control has three buttons, the + turns it on and increases the intensity of the setting, the () cycles through the modes and patterns and can turn the vibrations in the remote off, and the – turns it off and decreases the intensity of the setting. When using the remote, the massager will automatically turn on in SenseMotion Mode 1. It can then be cycled through to SenseMotion Mode 2, next is steady vibration and lastly it goes to the preset patterns. The remote control can be locked by pushing the + and - buttons simultaneously for about 3 seconds.
When using the remote, the massager has 9 different power settings. To standardize vrooms and bees, I always use my Je Joue MiMi Generation I. They are as follows:
1 – Very low – 0.5 bees, 0.5 vrooms – comparable to MiMi below level 1
2 – Medium low – 1 vroom, 1 bee – comparably to MiMi on level 1
3 – High low – 1.5 vrooms, 1 bee – comparable to MiMi between levels 1 and 2
4 – Low medium – 2 vrooms, 2 bees – comparable to MiMi on level 2
5 – Medium – 2.5 vrooms, 2 bees – comparable to MiMi between levels 2 and 3
6 – High medium – 2.8 vrooms, 2 bees – comparable to MiMi between levels 2 and 3
7 – Low high – 3 vrooms, 2 bees – comparable to MiMi on level 3
8 – High – 3.5 vrooms, 2 bees – comparable to MiMi between levels 3 and 4
9 – Highest high – 4 vrooms, 2 bees – comparable to MiMi on level 4
When the remote vibrates with the massager, it is generally at the same level of vroom (maybe 0.5 vrooms weaker) but is one full bee louder (3 bees).
In steady vibration mode the remote’s vibrations can be turned off. Hold down the () button for about 5 seconds to turn off the remote’s vibrations. The remote will flash (rather than vibrate) in sync with the vibrations in the massager. The remote’s vibrations will remain off in both steady vibration mode and through all the preset patterns. Once returned to one of the SenseMotion Modes the remote’s vibrations will come back on.
In addition to the SenseMotion settings, Lyla 2 also has preset patterns. The information from the product page says it has 8 pattern settings, and the pamphlet that comes with the Lyla 2 says it has 6. In actual use, I count only 5 patterns. The intensity of each setting can be adjusted with the + and – buttons on the remote. The patterned settings are as follows:
1 – Slow pulses – 2 per second
2 – Faster pulses – 3 per second
3 – Cycling up through power levels (revving) – 1 cycle per second
4 – Slower revving – 1 cycler per 2 seconds
5 – Cycling through power levels and revving (feels random) – 1 cycle per 4 seconds
The Lyla 2 has two different SenseMotion Modes. The first mode allows the remote to control the intensity of the vibrations in the massager by positioning it. If the remote is horizontal, the vibrations are weak, the more it is positioned vertically, the stronger the vibrations get. Once the remote is positioned completely vertically, the vibrations are at 100% intensity.
SenseMotion Mode 1 is positional
The second mode allows the remote to control the intensity of vibrations in the massager by moving it. Shaking it rapidly allows the vibrations to be at 100% intensity. Shaking it slowly makes the vibrations weaker.
SenseMotion Mode 2 is movement oriented
Some basic dos and don’ts
Silicone and plastic are extremely easy to care for. Use water or oil-based lubricants with this toy. Clean it with warm water and soap, toy cleaner, toy wipes, or a 10% bleach solution to sanitize. Don’t boil it or run it through the dishwasher, because the heat will damage the motors in both pieces.
If the massager is inserted vaginally, extra care must be taken to clean all lubricant and fluids off where the retrieval cord attaches to the massager. This can best be done by soaking the entire massager in warm to hot water, and then soaping it up generously before the lubricant and fluids have a chance to dry and harden.
To store the Lyla 2, remove the batteries from the remote, and store it in a cool, dark place out of direct sunlight. Both pieces can easily be stored in the original packaging box, or in the satin toy pouch included if space is an issue. Since silicone and plastic are totally inert, it is safe to store the two pieces in the same pouch. Be sure to keep them out of prolonged contact with toys made of compounds like TPE, TPR, PVC, Jelly or Rubber. Compound materials can break down over time, unlike silicone, and could damage your Lyla 2.
All Lelo toys come with a 1-year warranty, and a 10-year quality guarantee. If your Lelo Pleasure Object fails to work due to faulty workmanship or materials during the first year after purchase, notify Lelo and they will replace it free of charge. The 10-year quality guarantee makes the owner eligible for 50% off the listed price if your Pleasure Object breaks within 10 years after the original 1 year warranty. Lelo Pleasure Objects can quickly be registered on the Lelo website.
In use, the massager feels almost identical to the Je Joue MiMi, but gives more pinpoint stimulation while the MiMi gives broader stimulation. The vibrations are nearly identical to the MiMi in both power and buzz/rumble; fairly powerful, middle of the road vibrations. Since I absolutely love my MiMi, that means I also absolutely love the Lyla 2 as well.
The massager is virtually silent. I found it can easily be worn under normal clothes (underwear and pants) and it won’t be heard in a room with just a little background noise. It might be heard in a completely silent library, but in a normal room no one will hear this through your clothes even on top speed. The remote, on the other hand, is fairly loud. If you plan to use this set in public, I would suggest using it with the remote’s vibrations turned off. That means you will only want to use it in steady vibration mode or in patterned vibration mode. Save the SenseMotion modes for when you’re in private, or for any time you don’t need to be discreet.
Both pieces of this set work well through clothing. If the massager is under clothing, and the remote is in a pocket, it still works very well in the same room. Through testing at home, I found the remote easily controls the massager at 24 feet distance, through walls and doors if both have a full charge.
There is sometimes a bit of lag time in the SenseMotion modes, before the massager responds to changes in the remote, and it seems to go from very weak to very powerful with very little variation in between. However, in the steady vibration mode a lot of variety can be felt.
*The Not As Great
I find the battery lid on the remote extremely hard to open and close; even using the plastic key provided I have already damaged the finish on the cover a bit. The more I practice, the better I get at it. I just have to be extremely careful.
My only other issue with the massager is how the retrieval cord attaches. I will not plan to insert it often because the area is nearly impossible to get clean, and since it can’t be boiled it’s going to remain nearly impossible to clean.
One more thing to remember, if you plan to use this set while you’re out and about; once the massager is turned on, it has a standby time of 1 hour. That means if the remote doesn’t turn on the massager’s vibrations within 1 hour, the massager will turn itself off and will no longer be receptive to the remote. You would then have to visit a restroom or other private area, take out the massager, make sure it’s turned back on into standby mode, and then carry on. So if you’re wearing this all night, the person with the remote will need to turn the vibrations on at least once an hour to keep the massager ready for more play later.
