A new study published in the August issue of the American Journal of Public Health reveals that gay and bisexual men are three times more likely to attempt or succeed at suicide than straight men. Nearly 3,000 urban gay or bisexual men were interviewed by Dr. Jay P. Paul of the University of California in San Francisco and his collaborators.

The study found that about 21% had made a plan at some point to kill themselves, and 12% had actually attempted suicide. The good news is that the rates for suicidal thoughts and attempts for gays and bisexuals is actually lower than previous studies estimated.
