Do you think that EF should have an instant messaging system in place?

Contributor: LusciousLollypop LusciousLollypop
I don't know how you all feel about instant messaging systems but they are quite useful to me. I don't really like how I need to "message/e-mail" or "post on a wall" to people who I want an answer from right away and have a decent conversation.

I want to have it in real-time and instant message them. You know what I'm talking about? You know on facebook how at the bottom of your screen, it says "Number of people online" and you click it.. and it takes you to all your friends so you can simply chat with them easily and one-on-one.

I think it would be really useful to have that here on EF. I know I have a lot of questions and want to talk to a lot of people on this website. I don't want to have to wait for them to get a notification that I messaged them or wrote on their wall, and then wait for my notification to come in. It takes forever.

What do you think? No judgement!

I think it would be neat if Eden had an IM.

I'd be happy enough with a notification system.

I dislike social networking sites as well as sharing my messengers with people in general; having a built-in IM system would only make me avoid EF because I don't like talking to people except on the forums for the most part. ):

I'm indifferent - it may be a good idea for some, personally I would not use it.

And that is totally fine. Not everyone likes instant messengers.

Perhaps if set up like Facebook so it's only your "Friends" that show up - otherwise, I can see it getting really bogged down and overtaxed with everyone on here.

The thing about forums is that it lets you think or take a break or be eating a sandwich and not look like a jerk for not responding quick enough.

I know that you can list multiple IM-clients, though, on your profile - thus giving people an option. Since it's free, people could easily make an EF-only one.

It would be awesome for the mentor program. You could sit there and chat with your mentor/student while they look over your review or you look over theirs.

I agree with that totally. Mentoring can be difficult without instant messaging. I add my students on skype so we can discuss the reviews or if they have any questions they need answers right then and there. It is pretty convenient.

@Chirple, You do make a good point. There should be a "contact list" with people you just want to talk to, not everyone. Very nice suggestion! xoxo

I realize that EF does not want to become like those other big social networks. but a instant messaging system would be so helpful in areas like the mentor porgram and communicating on the reviews.

I love the idea.

Well, I could see the use for the mentor program but I wouldn't want random people IMing me.

I'm not that tech savy, so I'm not sure how complicated that would be for EF. I can see it would be convienient at times, but what we have now does work. I guess I feel indifferent. I'm for it if it happens, but okay if it doesn't. It is certainly worth exploring.

I just list my Skype address.

I would definitely opt out if there was an im system---with Skype, I can list myself as away if I'm working on something, but if I am working on something and also have an EF tab open, and then somebody ims me, I look like a jerk for not responding immediately.
