Eye Herpes?

Contributor: FaerieLove FaerieLove
So I've noticed lately that there have been some herpes questions floating around on the forum.
Up until recently I only thought there were two areas you could get herpes, your mouth and your genital. But, now I'm learning you can get herpes in your eye? And it can just be passed by touch of an infected area and then rubbing your eye. I was wondering if anyone on EF knew about this?

And here's a link about eye herpes:

I've heard about it and was wondering why the opthlamologist's office had that on the questionnaire. I don't think any part of the body is immune from it!

Herpes...like any virus, can reside in many body parts. If you watch that lady ophthalmologist on the Re-stasis commercial, they say "has not been studied in patients with herpes viral infections of the eye"...

I had not heard of it until this last year when we were cat sitting for a friend, whose cat has eye herpes (and is blind in an eye from it). Very loving/healthy cat otherwise. Go figure!

You can get the Herpes virus in any mucous membrane that is able to be reached if there is a nerve bundle the virus can inflame. The virus is zoonotic meaning lots of animals can get the nasty little sores. It's opportunistic and has a weird lifecycle.
Did you know that almost all people who get cold sores around the mouth have the virus transmitted to them in or around infancy from being kissed on the face by family members?

Yeah it likes soft membrane tissue like what's around your junk, on your lips and mouth and around your eyes.

However, it can also affect other places. Ive seen many cases where people had it on their hands/fingers.

There are many herpes viruses and herpes can even go systemic (through out the body) though this is unlikely. People can have sores in their mouths and down their throats as well as anally. People with healthy immune systems however will not usually have anything like this happen to them, and if they do get infected with some sort of herpes virus the body is usually good at keeping recurrences to a minimum. The majority of people are actually carriers of some sort of herpes virus that lays dormant and they typically don't have signs or symptoms. Many people have the virus for "cold sores" but just don't happen to have outbreaks of them. But definitely if I had to have herpes I would totally NOT want it in my eyes.

the thing about herpes... is that it's everywhere (you know, because soo many people carry it) and can affect almost anywhere on your body. that's why you're told to wash your hands and avoid your eyes when you have an outbreak ANYWHERE. if you have good hygiene, eye herpes shouldn't really be a problem.

I have always been aware of it. Herpes can actually be spread to ANY moist/openning areas of the body.

I didn't know about eye herpes, but I did know that pink eye (conjunctivitis) is the same virus as chlamidyia.

Um... I'm sorry to inform you but the majority of pink eye infections are not caused by the clap. Though it is known to happen it is really uncommon in developed countries. It's found in areas where there are limited sanitization.

That's crazy, although I'm not surprised there is such a thing.

I'm not saying it's CAUSED by that. I'm saying that the two issues are caused by the same type of bacteria.... you know... like ringworm and jock itch. Different things, same fungus.

This is going to sound weird, forewarning!

When I was younger we had an indoor/outdoor cat. These stray cats kept coming around and they had some funky eye thing going on, then OUR cat ended up getting it. It was eye herpes, and it could be passed to humans, so our cat was quarantined for quite some time. That's how I learned of eye herpes. I guess when you're little and your cat is gone for so long it's a bit traumatizing lol!
