State law says babysitters have to be at least twelve years old, so that would be my default answer. But, I still think a child should not be left alone for the weekend by themselves until they are fourteen or fifteen and even then a neighbor should stop by and check in on them once in awhile.

If it's for the night I also would say that 11 or 12 would be a good age, but if it's for a longer period of time I think that 14 would be a better age. I was on my own almost every day at 12, running around town and such, and I did fine. Looking back on it I wouldn't let my OWN kid do that, but in our own home I think that they can hold down the fort at that age.

We have a neighbor who leaves their child who is 10 or 11 for a long period of time and the child does not seem very mature for their age. I usually have my daughter check on the child to see if they are ok and what not.

I've always been overly mature for my age and I started watching my younger sister when I was at most 10. Now I did know that I could go a couple of doors up and ask the neighbors for help if I had a problem and I was a straight A student so I wasn't a clueless child or anything. I really think that it depends on the child. It wasn't long periods of time, I'd say a couple of hours at most.

I would leave a 13 yr old home for a while but never over night maybe not till they are 16 and still then I would be having some one check on the house

I don't think I could leave my kids alone until they were 16 and then I'd have a family member stop in and check on them.

It really depends on the kid and the situation I'm sure, but I wouldn't leave one alone any younger than 12 for any significant amount of time.

I would say it depends on the child. At 10, I was babysitting and left home alone. Not for long periods of time, but I still did. By the time I was 12, I could be trusted to be left alone for overnight.

The Maturity of the child plays a huge part. I have a cousin who is 18 now, and I still wouldn't trust him to be alone because he isn't mature. I was mature at 10.

I have two boys and I plan to allow them to be alone when they have reached a maturity level I feel it would be appropriate for me to leave them alone. My state does not have a legal age that children can be left alone, so it's when I say.

13 is a good age because they can do for themselves at that age, they know not to go anywhere or do anything that they wouldn't normally be allowed to do if we were there. Where I'm at the legal along age is 13 and I know that some kids can't even be left alone at that.

I agree with this answer.

12 or 13, depending on the kid. I was left alone by the time I was in 5th grade. If the child is mature and able to care for themselves, I wouldn't have a problem leaving them alone. Then again, I've seen too many immature teenagers I'd never leave alone in my house for a long period of time.

I'd say 13 with lots of rules of course. My brother was 12 when he stayed home with both my sister and I (ages 7 and 8) because my mom was a single mom and supported a family of 4 off of less than $20,000 per year. He taught us to ride bikes, swim, tie our shoes, etc. I never felt unsafe with him keeping us or being at home without an older babysitter.

I think it depends on the kid and how mature they are.

I think I was around 11 or 12 when my mom would leave me alone, but my sister was always there and is 2 years older. I think if she had been 11 or 12 it would have been fine, I don't remember either of us ever freaking out about her being gone haha.
It was never overnight, though.

When I was a kid, I was 10 before my mom left me alone, but I was definitely ready before that. She just had to cover her bases because that was the legal age. I remember her being extremely anxious the first time I stayed home alone.

About 13-16, depending on the child. I think I was 13 when my parents let me stay home alone.

I was left alone a couple of times at 13 but I would say at least 14. By then you are in middle school for sure and most parents have started teaching responsibility and what not by 12 or 13 so that gives time for them to learn it all first. I would say that they shouldn't be for very long time though. Maybe like when they first get home from school til you get off work in 2 to 3 hours or something like that. Longer than that, they shouldn't be.

Of course, it depends on the child, but I am comfortable leaving my 9 year old alone while I run to the store or across town. Would not leave her for extended periods though. I am totally fine leaving my 12 year old overnight.

I remember being home alone at the same ages when I was a kid and had no problems at all!

I say 11-12 but only for a couple of hours with frequent phone calls to check on them.

it probably depends on how long you would be leaving the child alone and if they in a safe neighborhood

I was left alone at 9. I was also mature for my age, though.
