Should a woman who wants an abortion be forced to get an ultrasound?

I can't speak for all states, but I knew someone years back who wanted an abortion due to rape. They did an ultrasound then to determine the term of the pregnancy, but she was not forced to watch. This is not unusual to my knowledge. However, when you take the mindset that an invasive ultrasound or procedure should be forced, I take offense. When a woman is already psychologically suffering and physically traumatized the last thing she wants is yet another object forced inside of her by yet another man forcing themselves on her through law this time. Clearly these are older men who have no empathy for women whatsoever if they can vote for such a thing. Either way, no procedure, in my opinion, should be forced upon any women's body at any time.

I've had to have them for medical reasons, and they aren't enjoyable. The first time I had one, it hurt incredibly much. The most recent time, it was less painful, and felt like someone was using a joystick inside me to play a video game. But both times were because I needed them medically, and I consented. I was not coerced. I consented, based on my doctor's medical opinion of the necessity, and that makes all the difference.

Without consent, it's just rape.

can't believe the gop wants to dictate people's heathcare choices but not help them pay for it if they can't afford any.

Well said!

For the record, I couldn't be more against this ridiculous legislation. It's taking a giant step backwards, and even though the right-wing fundies seem to want to revert to the dark ages, I think it's probably just a smoke-screen like all the other hot-button "issues" they like to scream about around election time. It's all about pushing the buttons of the lemmings that faithfully cast their votes for the GOP. It's probably some sort of activation mechanism that was subliminally programmed into them during FOX news that triggers them to go to the polls.

Too cynical?

Females already have a hard time making a decision with abortion. It's like unnecessary psychological torture. And it's none of their business.

Especially not the transvaginal kind.

Only when medically necessary, no need to try to shame those who feel the need to get an abortion.

It's not medically necessary. It's just more mind-fucking from the extreme right.

Forcing women to endure transvaginal ultra sounds is just rape. If the government really passed such a law, why not go all the way back to the dark ages and bring back ridiculous punishments for small crimes and public executions? At least then they'd be consistent~

The Right Wingers need to get their heads out of other people's lady parts. They're not wanted there, nor do they belong. In the unlikelihood I were to get pregnant, the most likely way being through rape, I wouldn't be able to support a child financially and I have never wanted children in the first place. I'm a lesbian and that's what makes pregnancy unlikely for me. The government shouldn't have any right in telling me what to do with my body and an ultra sound should only ever be necessary if a doctor deems it so. A doctor who finds terminating without an ultra sound would endanger the mother's life. The way I understand it, an ultra sound isn't necessary unless a woman is bleeding or is predisposed to something.

No, i think it'd be wrong to show the mother the child she's about to get terminated. It's just a horrific experience for the mother.

I agree the government should stay out of the abortion business. Especially paying for them...

No, it should never be forced. If the woman wants to have one done for any reason then she should be able to have it done. But otherwise if she doesn't then it shouldn't happen, end of story.

I totally believe the Far Right wants to dictate peoples' choices and then has no interest in whether they can afford it or not. That's how they operate! They don't want "The Government" in their money business, but they want access to what is going on in everybody's uterus. WTF?

But, I agree with you that it IS unbelievable (almost) that anyone would think that way.

If you're against this legislation and other attempts to dictate what a woman should do with her own uterus, you could sign this petition. It was started by the National Physician's Alliance, an organization that is composed of doctors that are tired of corporate and political BS interfering in medicine.

No, unless it's medically necessary. Most of the time it's not, and it's just an unnecessary hassle.

I think that is an insane violation of privacy. A woman should be allowed to have a timely, cost efficient, and non-invasive abortion if she chooses. Laws like that are designed to harass a woman and to make abortions more difficult for the sole sake of pushing an agenda; not to help the woman or the child.

That should be a decision between the doctor and patient. a legislative body should not be involved.
