Would you consider leaving the US if birth control was outlawed?

No, I wouldn't leave.

You know, this talk of emigration reminds me of a qikipedia tweet I'd read a few days earlier:

'After George Bush's 2004 election win the number of calls from US citizens to Canadian immigration jumped from 20,000 to 115,000 a day'.

I love the US but I would leave if we turned into a nation that outlaws birth control

The closer the right gets to imposing their beliefs on everyone else, the closer I get to packing up and letting them have the place.

I love to travel and move to new places, so I always consider leaving the US. If it's a good enough reason or opportunity, I'm gone

Yes, because birth control is such a strong symbol for women's rights. To take away the right to birth control would be such an enormous step back for women. While I would try initially to change it, if nothing did, I would be forced by my principles to leave. I don't shop at anti-woman businesses, why should I help fund a country that puts down women

I've already considered leaving the US. That said, I wouldn't live anywhere where birth control were outlawed, because that would mean they'd have to have tons of other seriously unwarranted, oppressive laws as well (not that we don't already have stupid laws here).

It depends on what the punishment for breaking the law was... something mine then I'd probably stay and take my chances.

That would be awful! I mean, if it really happened I would like to move out of the U.S. if it was available to me but there's no way in heck I could afford that. I'd have to say no and just stay here. I highly doubt that would ever happen though. I'd definitely consider moving to a different state though.

Again another political issue that shouldn't be a concern. We have too many politicians trying to push their beliefs on us. The consitution was written for we the people and we are suppose to have a voice in what happens in our government.

No. It'd surely be attainable online and I sure don't have the money for my broke ass to move anywhere.

There have been a lot of good points made. I really don't think I would leave or that this would actually happen. If it did, I think there would be a lot of other issues and the country may be at a point that recovery would not be easy.

Leaving isn't a realistic option so the point is moot but assuming it could easily be done.

If one just waved a magic wand and made it happen. No, stay and fight for change.
However, I'm assuming that if it ever got to the point that this would happen a lot of other things would be fucked up as well and it would likely be a good time to abandon ship.

Yes, I would. There isn't any way I'm staying in a country so monumentally stupid that it bans birth control while overpopulation is one of our world's biggest issues.

It depends to what extent it's outlawed. I'm sure it would be a by-state thing, and I'm sure not ALL forms would be banned, for example, condoms, because they can be deemed as protection against STIs and we don't want those getting around. It's a silly thing to try and outright ban, and as much as they want to try, I don't think it can be done. It'll be like the prohibition of birth control.
For the time being I'm safe, with 3 1/2 years left on my IUD. Haven't used any other form of protection in a year and a half (I regularly get checked for STIs, as do my partners), but my mom and stepdad (sexual health workers) practically throw tons of condoms at me, so I've got stock (for free!).

yes, lol. My kids are 10 months 6 days apart in age. I can't have kids that close every yr so yes i'd consider it. i'm on IUD and it's 100% covered by insurance but that'd suck if it wasn't. I have NO intention of ever getting tubes tied/burnt and hubbys not getting snipped. we want more kids but not right now. i'd protect big time but highly doubt it'd happen

If this is hypothetical, then yes, that feels like a violation of basic personal rights, but by then other things will have turned so far that banning contraceptives would not be the straw that broke the camel's back.

However, if we are discussing an actual possibility, then between Griswold v. Connecticut, Roe v. Wade, and Eisenstadt v. Baird, I feel pretty safe about the legality of contraceptives, because my access to them is a Constitutional right. I feel the modern argument is centered around who pays for it, you, the insurance company, or the government, and that decision can be considered up in the air. The Obamacare vote did not decide which parts of the plan are constitutional, just the the government has the right to "tax" someone who does not purchase insurance.

I'm using birth control to try and help manage my terrible periods and to shrink my cysts . If it got outlawed, I would be infuriated. It really isn't the damn governments business what women do with their bodies.

As for your question, no, I can't afford to leave the U.S. right now. I can't even afford to travel within the U.S these days. I'm swamped in medical bills, which includes my birth control treatments.

Let's say that hypothetically birth control could actually be outlawed in the entire country. Would I leave? Hell yes. But it would never happen.

I'm sure plenty of people wanted to leave the country during prohibition but most can't just up and leave when stupid laws are passed. If BC was illegal I would do what I could to change it but I would find it hard to leave America. There would always be a black market for supplies at least; there certainly was for liquor.
