How about an online silent auction where people donate things like vouchers for toys, gift certificates, art, grafts, etc. There could be a minimum amount each could be worth so no one you bids knows that they are going to win a "boobie ... more
Cool idea!

Yup - exactly ... every month could BE different, and work differently... so we never get burnt out and we can always go back and do something again if we all liked it and wanted to return to it

That would be a great idea too. I'm just saying that I've never been turned away when donating clothing.

Perhaps you could get us a list of the other things that these places are looking for that isn't clothing?

We could definitely do something. Think about what we could do, how we can work together to do it, and then how we can raise money to help. Keep in mind, in order for these ideas to really work long term, we have to go beyond our community donations.

No no, I was not turned away. Like I said, I do it every month and have for quite a few years. But a lot of it is getting wasted right now because there is not enough man power (or money to ship things) for the amount of clothing donations. Does that make sense? I heard it was an issue for Purple Heart and the Salvation Army.

We just consume way too much . The same article quoted that the average American gets 11 new pieces of clothing a month, while in some third world countries they don't get one per year.

On the tangent of the women's shelters, maybe if we can't raise all that much money, we could put out a call for items that the shelter might need? Canned goods, clothing, children's toys, etc?

It would require mailing these things to one central location probably, and then being distributed to the community member making the donation, but it could be a possibility.

Maybe we need to map out a few scenarios and look at how things would work for each:

1. Volunteer with time and effort

2. Collect goods of some kind and donate them

3. Raise money for an organization

These are 3 different types of actions this club wants to engage in, right?

So let's map put how we can collectively do these types of things.

Me either. I just know it is an issue. Sure thing. I actually am friends with someone who runs a consignment shop in our area and has ties with a lot of donation centers. Anything that does not get sold in 90 days gets donated.

I would love to expand this to shelters in general.

Just because the Salvation Army that you're donating to is overwhelmed with clothing right now doesn't mean that the Salvation Army in say, Norfolk, Virgina is. And there are plenty of other places to donate clothing to besides Salvation Army
I know some of our local high schools and community centers have "walk in closets". Rooms full of donated clothes and shoes and jewelry and personal care items that the students and kids can come and get if they need them free of charge.

Also, a lot of people have a lot of books hanging around. From what I've read, books like those can be donated to local hospitals, shelters, or I think they even take them in prisons as well.

It was just a tangent since I had seen women's shelters specifically mentioned. I see absolutely no reason why it should be limited to that.

It's true. I'm wondering about maybe something having to do with batteries. A lot of shelters need batteries for small items and such, and EF sells batteries as well. Along with that, most of us have old cell phones sitting around, and they can actually use those for abuse victims since old cells, no matter their phone service, can still dial 911.

I just saw a poster today that was asking for books for veteran's centers.

Books! Yes, great idea. MY library back home took donations too. They would then have a sale and the proceeds would go to local causes.

I know I have an old cell phone or two laying around. I wouldn't mind parting with those either.

We have "Books behind bars" here.. for prisoners. Philly is rife with volunteerism and donation opportunities.

Mabe we could have something at the check out to donate batteries? Or is that a programming nightmare?

Ihave like 4 or 5 old cells sitting around too.

Well, mayhaps we can start with a small group that focuses on each of the different actions and go from there?
