Eden Photographers Club Meeting - Tuesday, December 20th @ 7 pm EST (Topic: Long Exposures}

Contributor: Vaccinium Vaccinium
It’s time for another meeting of the Eden Photographers Club! For December's Eden Photographers meeting, which will be held on Tuesday, December 20, at 7:00 EST, we will be covering long exposures. Long exposures are necessary to create things like the wispy veil of water in a waterfall, star tracks, and all sorts of abstract images that can raise your photography to a new artistic level. Along with macrophotogtraphy, long exposures are my two favorite types of photos to take, and I plan on teaching all of you the tricks to ensure that you can create photos that will dazzle people viewing them.

Also, remember to bring one or two photos that you would like to post during our meeting that everyone will critique. Critiquing and being critiqued improve you as a photographer, and I'm hoping we can begin focusing on critiquing during these meetings as much as the tutorials I present.

Further, two EdenFantasys gift cards will be awarded during the course of the meeting.

Finally, as usual, this is your chance to take ownership of the Eden Photographers Club. It is where you will be able to express you opinions on where you want to see the club headed, ideas for new activities, and topics you would like to see discussed. Of course, like all EF meetings, it will be a fun and free-wheeling opportunity to socialize with other EFers.

So, please join us for the meeting. I’ve you’ve attended before or have yet to make it to a meeting, everyone is welcome!

So.... I'm sure this topic has at least one thread dedicated to it, but what kind of cookies - if any - do you and your family make for the holidays?

Yup. These are clothespin cookies, which are kinda like mini ladyfingers. They look a bit like these, but without the powdered sugar

Some of my extended family (my aunt's in-laws?) make some mean bourbon balls. I'm still trying to replicate them...

Then my mom makes a bunch of the standards, but the only ones I really enjoy are date-rice-crispy balls and chocolate coconut no-bake cookies (oat base).

Let's see. We make pizzelles, clothespin cookies, fattigman (a Norwegian cookie), toffee bars, janhagels (Dutch ), toffee bars, chocolate sour cream cookies, peanut blossoms, chocolate orange peels, buckeyes, and lebkuchen (German). I think that's it.

Ooh, I love fattigman---those were the rum strips?

And Rugelach... I'm a fig and date fan, this time of year.

Those sound really good.

My mom (the years she feels like baking) will make a whole bunch of different cookies. She seems to love spritzes and sugar cookies the most though.

I've never really seen the joy in spritzes or the dry style of Mexican Wedding Cakes / Russian Tea Cakes. I like my morsels moist.

Fattigman is a simple dough with crushed cardamon. Here's a photo

I like the spritzes because they're so soft usually. They have a relatively unique texture that I really enjoy in a cookie.

Welcome to the tenth meeting (yay, double digits!) of the Eden Photographers Club! I hope everyone had a good month of thinking about photography and looking at the world through a photographer’s eyes. I want to thank all of you who are here tonight. Winter is upon us, and besides all the holiday photos all of you will undoubtedly be taking, there are still plenty of other opportunities for photographs out there.

This meeting will focus long exposures. Honestly, I could probably go on for hours about this topic, since it is one of my favorite ways to take photos. I'll do my best to limit it to around an hour, though . Long exposures are pretty much what they sound like - they are photos where the shutter is left open for an extended period of time. By doing so, you can create artistic photos that typically draw attention to movement.

Before we get started, is there anything anybody wanted to bring up about photography or the club?

Aside from wishing I had tried more of these in high school, nothing that I can think of!

You can use several different types of alcohol, but my family was pretty poor, so they omitted the alcohol because it was so pricy.

So, as I already mentioned, long exposures are photos taken with the shutter open for an extended period of time. There is no set duration for a shutter to be left open for something to be called "long exposure." Really, it depends on your subject. For example, a long exposure of a snail moving across a surface may need to be 10 or more seconds, whereas a long exposure of a race car flying by may be 1/15 of a second. In general, though, most long exposures will be in excess of a second.

Given that the shutter is going on - with few exceptions (that I'll mention later) - you cannot hand hold your camera. There is no possible way to hand hold a camera, no matter how steady your hands are. Merely the beating of your heart will send vibrations to through the camera and cause the resulting image to by fuzzy or out-of-focus. As such, if you really get into taking long exposures, a tripod is an absolute must.

You also need muted light to obtain long exposures. It is technically possible to create long exposures in bright conditions, but it would require an extremely small aperture (large f-stop) and the stacking of multiple neutral density filters on your lens. Suffice it to say, not only is this a lot of work, it will degrade the image as well.

I do have a question about the EF calendar. What is the situation regarding it?

I have absolutely no idea. It is totally out of my hands now. Perhaps Sam knows more.
