Thats so gay Offensive?

I think when the word gay is used to describe something as stupid its not offensive. Maybe its because I live in a surrounding where the word Gay used to describe something stupd. I don't know it just doesn't bother me.

I curse like a sailor, but I don't say it.

I don't think it's incredibly offensive, but the term is homophobic and disrespectful.

It makes the person saying it look really foolish.

Offensive, offensive, offensive. I don't see how using "gay" as a synonym for bad or stupid could be seen as NOT offensive. If a friend of mine used it, I would have to talk to them about it.

Personally it does not bug me if it is OFF subject of a LBGT issue. Now if say a gay couple kiss and some jerks decide to say "THATS SO GAY!" and laugh, YEAH it's offensive.

It's like the word fag. I mean I use that word all the time, I speak and spell like I am from Britain (minus the accent) So if I want a cigarette, I say I want a fag. I dont mean anything by it. I am not using it in a derogatory way at all. Yet people get offended by it. But when something like that is in your system it is SO hard to shake.

Same goes for "Thats So Gay" When something like that is in your system, it is hard to shake off. Maybe they dont mean anything by it either. Some people just simply say it instinctively as a response without thinking of or even considering others around them.

Sometimes you simply have to. I actually called someone out on it in high school. I got beat up so bad, quite a few stitches, and the doctors were worried that I may have had a moderate concussion (which was only a minor one).

When I got back to school I was informed that I had been suspended for a week. The Principal knew the whole story, a few friends of mine told him the whole story where he only had 1 witness to the beating.

So sometimes it is best to keep your mouth shut when you hear someone say that kind of thing.

I think it started innocently by someone close minded; and should be discouraged.

Some people dont even realize they use it as a synonym though. It comes out naturally, second nature. I mean as I said before, I had my @$$ beat because I had called someone out on it. So sometimes it is best to let it rub off. Bite your lip.

I mean, I dunno. I feel like people have the right to be offended by it. I don't personally take any offense to anything. Ever. But if someone is offended by something like that I understand and so I don't use that term in that sense.

I will say that's so gay for things that are incredibly flamboyant though. I still feel offensive when I use that one, but maybe I'll work on tuning that out.

I find it offensive in the same way that people tell me I sound white. Like whites are the only people who speak properly.

In general, I personally don't find it offensive. I only find it offensive when it is used in a very malicious manner in regards to homosexuality. Usually it's all in good fun. I can understand why someone might be offended by it completely, but I find it difficult to consider a generic phrase that is not in regards to me offensive.

Personally, I find the ignorance of that statement to be obnoxious. Is the education system so poor that "gay" is the only word in their vocabulary to describe something? When people say "that's so gay" I just find it annoying, rather than offensive. They're simply displaying their inability to dig through that dried up gray matter between their ears for a more fitting word.

It seems like such a high school thing/like such a thing from my past that if I hear it nowadays it would probably be a positive thing, and I would be like WHERE!?

I used to say it often before I entered high school, and I didn't really know what it meant, it was just another way to say stupid to me. And My choir teach, dun dun dun, was gay, and he set me straight. He talked about how he and other members of the gay community found it offensive, and since I didn't have anything against them, I've stopped saying it.

Actually, I'm going to address the word dumb also. My American Sign Language professor made it clear to us that he did't want us using the word dumb, but instead to always translate certain signs as 'stupid' instead. A dictionary definition of dumb is the condition of being unwilling or unable to speak, but it is also associated with being stupid, which he didn't like. So I try to not use that term either.

I think it's rude that people use this as a deroggatory term, but I also understand many people who use it that way actually are not homophobic (at least people I went to school with) sadly it is almost like they have been indoctrinated to use these words and phrases without considering the meaning behind them.

I definitely think it's offensive. I mean, how can it not be? When you say something's "gay", you're saying it's "stupid", "inferior", and a number of other things. You're saying it's worse than it could be! I understand that it's hard to stop saying something like this if you've said it a lot in the past but people need to realize what they're actually saying. There are people who say something's "gay", without really meaning to be offensive, and therefore they're not taking notice of the fact that it IS offensive. Even I say it sometimes and my boyfriend definitely does. Just as I've been trying to stop saying it, I wish he would, as well.

I think that it certainly is offensive. However, when my close friends and I are together, we'll sometimes use the phrase jokingly. I also have a tendency to exclaim "that's so gay!" when I see something wonderful, now.

I don't know. I guess I would say it depends on the topic sometimes. I know I sometimes say it without realizing, it's more like something that just pops out but I definitely don't mean it derogatively at all.
