Do you always lock the doors to your house, car (etc)?

Contributor: spiced spiced
I do, but the people who lived here before us didn't. They had to search for days before they could even FIND the key to the garage, which they claimed never to have locked in 30+ years of living here. They didn't lock the doors, or the windows, of the house; they didn't lock their cars, or the shed with the lawn mower and snowblower... And they never had a single problem.

That made me feel really good about our neighborhood — but I still lock up! I just can't seem to "let go" enough to leave anything valuable unlocked.

How about YOU? Do you always lock up?

Yes and yes. I hate it when my girlfriend leaves my car unlocked. I keep my gas card in my car. She's also bad about leaving the back door unlocked, too.

I like to keep them locked mostly because that's how I was raised.

Always here too. I can't imagine not locking up, although I know quite a few people who never do.

Always. There's just too much crime in the world nowadays to take a chance.

We lock the house - but my car is so old (1999) I have no fear of it being stolen - I never lock it.

I always lock everything up but that's because my insurance is a bitch about that sort of thing and if I need to file a claim I want the house to look broken into. Also I am a bit paranoid and sure someone is going to get me while I sleep!

Usually yes. The lock on our front door is broken but someone is almost always home so we don't worry too much. We put the chain lock on it at night and always lock the back door. Our car is always locked.

Guilty of not locking doors. I've grown up in the same spot my entire life and nobody around here locks doors, but the past couple of years we've heard of a few break-ins, so more people have started to. I tried that ol' lockin' the doors thing for a while & it was nice, but I ended up locking out my family and partner who all come and go throughout the early day time when I am sleeping. So I quit. LOL. Even though we live in probably the most peaceful, friendly neighborhood on earth, it's not the best idea to not lock our doors. We really should. My lovie flips out over me not locking them, but that is just how I grew up so it's not a ritual I remember every day anyways. I should get into the habit, but I really hate when I'm passed out and people can't get in (family and him) so they come pound on the window of my bedroom. And I feel bad when they have to wait for me to wake up. LOL.

I do keep my car locked & if we ever go out of town, we actually have to put locks on not only our front & back doors, but bedrooms too because we have a theif in the family who has literally robbed me of every posession in my bedroom more than once while I was gone, so that is necessary. That is also why I keep my car locked. At one point, I even had to lock most of my belonging in my car! I don't take chances there because this family member could very well sneak up while I'm sleeping and actually take off in my car if it weren't locked. And I am not even playing. LOL. It happened before. I'd been in surgery and my partner drove me because well, you can't drive yourself after surgery, so my car was left home. My older sister called me minutes after I got out of surgery and was in the vehicle to tell me my car was gone from the house! I panicked and what do ya know? Lovely family member decided my being in surgery was the perfect opportunity to go for an all day joy ride! So I keep that sucker locked up at all times.

Yes, I'm way too paranoid not to. I don't exactly live in a nice area.

Always. We live in a pretty big city. And we would actually get fined if we left our car unlocked.

Our house is never locked lol. But I'm part of a biker family, so there are generally 3 bikes out front at any given time. Not many people are willing to mess with bikers!

We lock up only when leaving for an extended time. Our area is so rural there really is no need for it. We only lock our cars when we are on a trip or if the dogs are inside--when shopping.

house, yes. Car, no. With the car I'm driving, if they break in and/or try to steal it, they get what they deserve.

Always. I really don't know how anyone could walk away from their possessions without some kind of precaution. Would you walk away from a 10,000$ pile of money?

I lock up 100% of the time! Even in the best neighborhood, there's ALWAYS a risk.

Growing up, we'd leave the front door unlocked during the day if we were home and awake. We always made sure to lock it if we were going out and when we went to bed for the night.

Now I always keep my door locked, even when I'm at home. Especially when I'm home alone or home with just my 4-year-old. I'm too paranoid about someone coming in that doesn't belong here. (I've got one really creepy neighbor, and I feel justified in my worries.)

We've always locked our cars up for as long as I can remember. That didn't stop my mom's car from getting stolen out of our own driveway when I was eight.

Always my front door, rarely my back one, which is sliding glass doors. They stay open most of the time because I have a large dog that is constantly in and out. My truck, only if I have something in it

That sounds similar to my situation growing up. We only locked up at the end of the day, or if no one was home. My dad never locked his car, either. We never had any problems with house or car. The only problem we ever had was when my brand new 10 speed bike (Schwinn Varsity — remember those?) got stolen off the front porch. Ironically, it was locked, but with a really thin cable.
