With inflation being so high I think that the penny has lost its value and can be eliminated from the currency system.

I'm for it. Just put the extra cents on a card that accumulates loose change credits over time.

You say the rounding will only go up, but financial analysts say not so. There are severeal reasons why it will save us money to elimate the penny (I posted both before.)

Lost productivity and opportunity cost of use — With the average wage in the U.S. being about $17 per hour in 2011, it takes about two seconds to earn one cent. Thus, it is not worthwhile for most people to deal with a penny. If it takes only two seconds extra for each transaction that uses a penny, the cost of time wasted in the U.S. is about $3.65 per person annually, about $1 billion for all America. Using a different calculation, economist Robert Whaples estimates a $300 million annual loss.

Prices would not be higher — Research by Robert Whaples, an economics professor at Wake Forest University, using data on nearly 200,000 transactions from a multi-state convenience store chain shows that rounding would have virtually no effect. Consumers would gain a tiny amount – about 38/1520 (1/40) of a cent per transaction.

So, we'll actually, as consumers gain money by eliminating it.

They've said that they were going to take away the penny for years... but it's still here so I really doubt that they are going to take it away now... but who really every knows

Nickels work ok

But I agree with you Ryuson. I think they should only have to round off for cash payments. I also heard that they would round down. In the case of the 3.46$ big Mac, it would be 3.45$ instead. I could see it happening to the US penny someday too.

I'd like to see it stick around but I'm pretty sure it's on it's way out.
Though with the cost to make them being more than they're even worth I can understand why phasing the penny out is a good idea for the most part.

At least if they do away with it I have the ones in my coin collection as a fond memory. ^_^

That's how it's done in Australia. They round up or down depending on which 5 cent marker is closer. So, say that you get a bag of crisps for 66 cents, you'd pay 65, but if it cost 68, you'd pay 70.

It should be eliminated, but only if you can sell back your pennies. But hey, I'm a canadian so I shouldn't have to say my opinion on this. But we still have your pennies over here.

When I was a kid, there was an ice cream stand near me that had a big sign "BAN THE PENNY". They wouldn't accept pennies, nor would they give them in change. This was seen as an oddity and maybe they did it just for marketing!

That actually sounds like a good idea, especially if it will help save some money in the long run. I rarely use my pennies, they collect in tins and car nooks and crannies. With so much commerce being conducted with debit and credit these days, what would be the harm?

I definitely have some sentimental feelings towards pennies, and I don't really like when things change, but I can understand the arguments for getting rid of them.

That said, I wonder if anyone has considered the cost of all the bureaucracy and required changes that businesses would have to make? Would they have to be exchanged at the bank for different coins? What would happen to the obsolete pennies? Would the government collect them all and melt them down? Who pays for all that? Would it still save money after factoring all that in?

I'm in Canada and I'm very happy it's being elliminated. It's annoying standing behind someone while they count change to the exact penny but I guess this practice won't stop just because one coin is elliminated. There is good and bad to everything, but for the most part I'm happy about it.
