I know that the guy who makes the Hardwood Dildos brand uses Salad Bowl Finish.
link It's a food safe oil-based varnish. In my experience it hasn't needed re-oiling or anything exciting... but I'd avoid submerging it.
I know NobEssence uses something 'secret' though, to fully seal their products.
Otherwise, wood is amazing! I love the hardness of it, just not the water unfriendliness of it.
And a properly sealed wood dildo will NEVER, NEVER splinter, so you have nothing to fear. Just like you can wash a wood cutting board or salad bowl many times and never see a splinter (just warpage if you soak them!), likewise, you will never see a splinter from a well-sealed wood toy. There is something so unique about wood, really... your orifices will thank you for the treat!
