I don't know much about the materials used in sex toys, but the fact that something as simple as body paint can contain such harmful substances as parabens concerns me. Is there some kind of safety standard that all sex toys and products must conform to?

Unfortunately, there's no standard. Sex toys and accessories basically go unregulated, and it's up to the manufacturers to hold themselves to the safety and quality standards they set for themselves. Some companies (Tantus, for example) focus on producing only high-quality, body-safe products, while others are less scrupulous.

It's basically up to the buyer to become savvy about what they buy and who they buy it from.

In the United States, it's basically "buyer beware". The same goes for household cleaners, cosmetics, toiletries and products made of plastics and rubbers.
